Statement of Purpose
47
Please briefly outline the overall aims of the programme. This should clarify to a prospective student why they should choose this programme, what it will provide to them and what benefits they will gain from completing it.
48
Our MA in Social Research has been designed to develop world class, social science researchers as defined by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). You will achieve this standard by developing your understanding of the philosophy of research as well as the skills and expertise required to confidently manage the full social science research life cycle - from methodological design and data analysis, through to communication and dissemination. The programme effectively combines core methodological training with a range of thematic optional modules which provide you with the flexibility for interdisciplinary study and to explore your own specialist area of interest whilst preparing you to complete an independent research project in the Social Science field of your choice. As a result, as a successful graduate you will be in a position to conceive and lead focused, ethical, strategic research projects for local government, central government, non-governmental organisations and in the private sector, as well as preparing you to undertake a PhD.

Do not include years in industry / abroad (for which there are separate boxes).

Programme Learning Outcomes
60
What are the programme learning outcomes (PLOs) for the programme? (Normally a minimum of 6, maximum of 8). Taken together, these outcomes should capture the distinctive features of the programme and represent the outcomes that students progressively develop in the programme and achieve at graduation. PLOs should be worded to follow the stem 'Graduates will be able to...'

Diverse entry routes
71
Detail how you would support students from diverse entry routes to transition into the programme. For example, disciplinary knowledge and conventions of the discipline, language skills, academic and writing skills, lab skills, academic integrity.
72
The programme is structured to support students from diverse backgrounds with respect to disciplinary knowledge and skills. The introductory modules at the start of the programme will support students, irrespective of their previous study, to become conversant with the different methods used in social science research to enable them to be confident in applying them as they progress through the programme. In addition, a wide range of subject specific modules are available in the spring and summer term which will enable students to work within their own specific discipline but will also them to investigate new areas of interest. Academic and writing skills are also inherent throughout the modules and there is a strong research integrity/ethical strand that runs throughout the programme.
Formative work is incorporated throughout which will also help identify students that may benefit from additional support from elsewhere within the University. The programme leader will also have a key role in supporting transition into the programme.
