Statement of Purpose
51
Please briefly outline the overall aims of the programme. This should clarify to a prospective student why they should choose this programme, what it will provide to them and what benefits they will gain from completing it.

A degree in Environmental Geography will equip you with skills and knowledge in physical geography in a way that will enable you to evaluate environmental problems and develop your own solutions. Your lecturers are experts in field such as environmenal hazards, sea-level change, glaciology, biogeography and palaeoecology. You will be trained to critically review relevant literatures in your field, and apply techniques and methods to designing research projects both locally and overseas. By your final year of study you are well equipped to undertake an independent research project in an area of environmental geography of your choice. You will be trained in the use and application of key digital learning technologies used by environmental geographers such as geographical information systems (GIS) and statistical packages to enhance your employability. Additionally, you will be trained in working and leading a team, and be provided with a range of opportunities to participate in groupwork in a range of tutorial, field and laboratory settings. Graduates from this degree are solution-oriented, inter-disciplinary thinkers who can communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to a range of audiences, the key environmental challenges facing humanity and their solutions. Our environmental geography degree will open up careers in research, public bodies such as the Environment Agency, conservation, water management and sustainable buisness practices. Our MEnv programme is designed to provide a more vocational experience than the 3 year BSc, and is particularly useful for those who wish to move into a career in the environmental sector, or for those preparing for a PhD. During the additional year of study you will be exposed to real world problems and policies through studying links between business and the environment. The programme also offers you the opportunity to design and undertake an advanced research project leading up to the preparation of a research publication-style dissertation. Through studying for MEnv you will become more aware of how our environment is managed, become proficient in research design and implementation, and further develop key skills in communication, team work and data analysis to increase your employability.

Programme Learning Outcomes
71
What are the programme learning outcomes (PLOs) for the programme? (Normally a minimum of 6, maximum of 8). Taken together, these outcomes should capture the distinctive features of the programme and represent the outcomes that students progressively develop in the programme and achieve at graduation. PLOs should be worded to follow the stem 'Graduates will be able to...'
72
1Debate, interpret and explain the causes, scales and impacts of issues such as climate change, glacial retreat and natural hazards using appropriate methods and norms, and engage critically with theory, knowledge and emerging issues in physical and environmental geography. [Knowledgeable and aware].
73
2Obtain, synthesise and critically evaluate information from a wide range of reliable sources, and collate this information to establish current understanding and independently identify key research questions in specialised areas of physical and environmental geography. [Independent learner].
74
3Cut across disciplinary boundaries to link knowledge and experience from physical geography, biology, chemistry, biogeography, the social sciences, to understand the physical environment, its impact on society and links with the management and business sector. [Interdisciplinary thinker].
75
4Identify knowledge gaps, plan, design and execute advanced research in environmental geography individually or within a team using critically-selected qualitative and quantitative methods in the field and other settings. [Creator of new Knowledge].
76
5Design and undertake critical analyses of qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate tools such as GIS and statistical packages to draw meaningful conclusions from research aimed at understanding the functioning of the physical environment, and its links with the human environment. [Analytical].
77
6Effectively communicate knowledge, complex ideas and persuasive arguments to professional and non-specialist audiences using verbal, written, visual and digital media and research publications. [Effective communicator].

Diverse entry routes
82
Detail how you would support students from diverse entry routes to transition into the programme. For example, disciplinary knowledge and conventions of the discipline, language skills, academic and writing skills, lab skills, academic integrity.
83
We support students from diverse entry routes to transition into the programme through support from pastoral supervisors who direct students to additional sources of advice and help over and above the academic skills embedded into the design of our programmes. This includes our Skills Hub, an online resource that provides a wealth of guidance and support, including video tutorials, that students can use to further build their skills and knowledge.

Inclusion
93
94
Please confirm by ticking the box on the right that the design, content and delivery of the programme will support students from all backgrounds to succeed. This refers to the University's duties under
the Equality Act 2010. You may wish to refer to the optional Inclusive Learning self-assessment tools to support reflection on this issue.

96
Employability
97
Please give a brief overview - no more than 5 sentences - of how the programmes helps develop students' employability. Your Faculty Employability Manager can help reflection on this issue. This statement will be used by Marketing as the basis for external content with respect to employability.
98
The programme outcomes capture key employability skills that graduates of an Environmental Geography degree can be asked to demonstrate when applying for successful and rewarding careers in a range of fields of work. By providing a clear pathway towards achieving these learning outcomes, and plentiful opportunities to use and practice these skills, e.g. via real world assessments, through our programme students will be able to draw out specific examples of work that they have undertaken to evidence their accomplishments to potential future employers. We have embedded an explicit set of employability principles in our programme which both ensures, and reflects, our commitment to developing students' employability.
