Many students with disabilities in New York City were unable to access appropriate services and programs during the period of remote learning. Families should request an IEP meeting as soon as possible if you believe that your child
requires compensatory services to address gaps in progress or skill regression as a result of the pandemic. Families can also file impartial hearing requests for claims for compensatory services. Learn more here.

NYCDOE Adult EducationThe NYCDOE offers adult education classes to adult residents of NYC who are over the age of 21, do not have a high school diploma, or have a high school diploma and/or college degree from another country. Classes offered include: English as a Second Language, Basic Education, High School Equivalency, and Career and Technical Education. Social security numbers/documentation of citizenship are not required to enroll in most classes.

Advocates for Children of New YorkAFC works to ensure that New York children from low income backgrounds receive fair and high quality education. The AFC website is available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and other languages. AFC advocates for and protects students by:

- Providing free advice and legal representation for families of students - Offering trainings and workshops for parents, communities, and educators and other professionals
- Advocate policy that affects change in the education system
- Impacts litigation to protect the right to quality education for all students and to compel education reform

Khan AcademyKhan Academy offers free educational lessons, activities, and videos for students. Creating an account is free and parents can also create accounts to find materials for their children. Riverside Language ProgramRiverside Language Program offers FREE English classes to documented, recently-arrived immigrants, asylees, and refugee adults currently living in New York City.

To determine your eligibility and apply for English language classes, please visit here. Once you have submitted your application, you will be contacted by a Riverside staff member within a few days. If you do not hear back from them, please email them at info@riversidelanguage.org. The next application day for classes beginning on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, will be on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

Girls Who CodeGirls Who Code offer free virtual summer programs that teach the computer science skills that students need to make an impact in their community while preparing for a career in tech. Participants will get exposure to tech jobs, meet women in tech careers, and join a supportive sisterhood. MixtecaMixteca offers classes on basic and intermediate level English as a second language (ESOL) and basic computer skills. Through the Instituto Nacional para la Educación de los Adultos (INEA), Mixtico offers elementary and middle school level courses. Upon completion of the program students receive a certificate from Mexico’s Ministry of Education. Literacy IncLINC’s virtual programming is designed to increase the hours children read and are read to, while also providing families with tools, resources, and skills to infuse their homes with literacy-rich activities. They curate daily activities for children and parents or caregivers to incorporate the five basic elements of early literacy: sing, play, talk, draw and read. For free online programming, visit here. The parent workshops empower parents to become their child's main and first teacher. Because they have invested in empowering parents with books, tools, and resources to foster an atmosphere of literacy at home, LINC families will continue to benefit from daily reading even during this time of social distancing. City TechCity Tech's Direct Support Professional Training for English Language Learners is designed to provide high intermediate/advanced level English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certifications, and English language skills required to be competent Direct Support Professionals. We provide civic-focused instruction through videos, web and print materials, and free community classes in all five boroughs. NY State Dream ActThe NY State Dream Act provides undocumented and other students access to NY State grants and scholarships to aid in higher education costs. Students who meet the NYS DREAM Act eligibility requirements for high school attendance, completion, in-state SUNY or CUNY tuition, and citizenship or immigration status will be able to apply for one or more NYS student financial aid programs.

College NowEligible New York City public high school students can enroll in a city university college course for free. All courses will be taught fully online. The requirements are: 1) the interested student will be entering 11th or 12th grade in fall, AND 2) the student must meet the academic eligibility requirements specific to the listed courses. The courses range widely on topics, from acting to language arts to algebra. You can find more information, in English, on the website here.
