GENERAL AWARENESS

Facebook & InstagramLINKOver the next 20 years, California’s older adult (65+) population will nearly double – those over 85 will be the fastest-growing demographic group.

To address the unique challenges our older adult population will face, California has developed a statewide Master Plan for Aging (MPA).

Locally, the Inland Coalition on Aging’s IE-MPA Advisory Committee is developing the Inland Empire MPA to support the unique needs of our community. We are proud to be part of the committee working on this important plan.

Be sure to follow along for updates on the Inland Empire MPA! Visit InlandAging.org to learn more.

REPORT FOCUS AREAS

AnyLINKWhile developing a Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire (IE-MPA), we spoke to the community for feedback on challenges related to housing.

People aged 65+ are likely to experience issues finding affordable housing due to budget constraints, lack of housing that accepts Section 8 subsidies, and AirBnBs taking over neighborhoods. In addition, they find it difficult to navigate the costs of downsizing.

Stay tuned for more findings from our community listening sessions! Learn more about the Inland Empire MPA here: InlandAging.org/mpa.

AnyLINKWhen we interviewed residents in the Inland Empire, they expressed a universal fear of what will happen when they can no longer drive.

Driving or using public transit is a necessity in our county, as it connects individuals with resources outside of their home. Among those using public transit, most users felt the bus drivers were kind and helpful, though transit routes do not connect with necessary stops. This poses an issue for those who cannot drive.

AnyLINKAs we develop a Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire (IE-MPA), we conducted listening sessions where participants shared their greatest challenges,. and healthcare is a big one.

Those we interviewed agreed that there is a shortage of healthcare workers, particularly specialists, and that the healthcare system is often overwhelming to navigate. In addition, they had trouble when dental and vision coverage needed to be purchased separately.

AnyLINKWhen we talked to residents in the Inland Empire about Alzheimer’s and other dementias, many individuals had not thought about what will happen if and when they experience memory issues—or what types of memory issues are normal versus concerning.

For those who had considered memory loss, they often focused on navigating the process as a caregiver, rather than the person it is happening to.

Our community must ensure that it is equipped with the right resources to live and age well. We’ve done research within our community, and now we’re using what we’ve learned to create a Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire. AnyLINKFor older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers, mental health and social support are closely linked. We’ve held listening sessions with our community to see what it really needs when it comes to social support. Community members reported a strong desire for intergenerational friendships, transportation and money to engage in social activities, intentional spaces to foster community, and the acknowledgement that pets play an important support role for aging adults.

Mental healthcare systems should also be easier to manage and friendlier to navigate—individuals should never feel lost in the system, nor rushed by it.

We’re using what we’ve learned in our listening sessions to create a Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire. Learn more at InlandAging.org/mpa

AnyLINKIn our listening sessions, many participants acknowledged there are simply not enough caregivers—especially because there are such long wait lists for long-term care facilities.

Caregiving is viewed as deeply important, valuable, and as a job that should be well paid.

Many caregivers are also informally providing care for friends and family. Caregivers themselves reported looking to Caregiver Resource Centers for support, maintenance of social connections and resources, and access to respite care.

RECOMMENDATIONS

AnyLINKFor older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers, housing can be a huge challenge due to financial and accessibility restraints. Our goal is to make affordable and accessible housing available for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers—and we’re doing that through our Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire.

Our recommendations include:
> Educate property developers about the growing older adult demographic and encourage them to build for better accessibility.
> Offer workshops focused on finding affordable housing.
> Advocate to provide housing support for family and friend caregivers who are in financial need.

Check out our recommendations at InlandAging.org/mpa. Join us in educating and supporting our Inland Empire community.

AnyLINKEveryone needs reliable transportation—but transportation remains a challenge for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers.

Through our Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire, we’re working to find solutions—including improved public transportation, medical transportation, and help for Alzheimer’s patients who can no longer drive.

Specific recommendations include:
> Research which senior centers do not currently have a bus and connect them with funding resources.
> Encourage health care facilities to promote and advertise public transportation alternatives for older and disabled adults.
> Advocate for free or subsidized rides for older adults and adults with disabilities on public transit.

With our Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire, we’re working to create positive changes to benefit the older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers of the Inland Empire.

Our recommendations include:
> Expand geriatric training for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and the paraprofessional healthcare workforce.
> Arrange for a Medicare representative to be available at local senior centers to answer questions.
> Advocate for age friendly health systems and age friendly emergency departments.

AnyLINKOur Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire includes caregivers. While there is support available for caregivers in the Inland Empire, the need is greater than the current capacity.

Our recommendations include:
> Organize a program to offer check-in calls to family and friend caregivers.
> Help current caregivers to plan for ‘life after caregiving’.
> Advocate for sustainable, increased funding for existing caregiver support programs.

AnyLINKOur Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire includes a section about education and awareness. One of our goals is to spread awareness in the community (including our youth) about aging, care and retirement planning, financial saving, dementia, how to choose a caregiver, as well as promote behavioral health resources.

In addition, we want to spread awareness for resources currently available for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers to ensure that they are getting all the help and support that they need.
