climate regulation3.8Much of the original mangrove has been cut to make into charcoal. The reforestation will help to regulate the temperature as well absorbing CO 2 to help in climate regulation.344443.8
5
water regulation2.8Relatively clean seawater with fishes observed swimming and no polluted smell. We also saw that the sanitation facilities are not built to reduce water contamination or pollution. Human waste at the toilets are going directly to the pond/pool below, and the pool is connected to the larger water body that the mangrove nursery is part of. Hence, regulating eco-services in terms of maintaining good water quality (by nature) to provide clean drinking water is not partially evident at point of visit.433222.8
6
erosion control3.4There is clear evidence of erosion. in fact the area Pulau Setokok is chosen as it was badly eroded. The gradual growth of mangrove has slowly reduced magnitude of erosion. The most obvious observation the moment we enter. Main purpose of mangrove was for restoration. 244343.4
7
natural hazard protection3.4We checked with the volunteers and it was mentioned that the area is quite sheltered by island and is not at risk from storms. However with climate change and rising sea level, there could still be a possibility of future hazards520322.4
8
aesthetic value2.2Natural aesthetic, no frills. But the scenic beauty of the area is noteworthy 322312.2

cultural heritage and social relations3.2if mangrove is gone, locals will lose their homes. Way of life will be affected if they are not able to do shrimping anymore. Emphasis on President Widodo planting of the mangroves helps bring about greater to importance of the area. Bring about greater sense of belonging. The villagers have also worked together in this endeavour - showing a high degree of teamwork and common purpose. The village head is said to support this as well. This demonstrates the positive social relationships of the village in this regenerating of the local economy.432433.2
