2 | To estimate the lifetime impact of GiveWell-influenced donations to top charities, we make a couple of key assumptions: 1. We assume donations given to a top charity before 2020 were equally cost-effective as the average GiveWell grant to that top charity from 2021. We make this simplifying assumption because we have not calculated the cost-effectiveness of individual grants from before 2020 in this workbook. Because we think it's likely that the cost-effectiveness of our top charities' programs has been decreasing over time, we believe this is a conservative assumption that may underestimate the true impact of GiveWell-influenced donations. We have chosen to use our average cost-effectiveness estimates for 2021 grants (rather than from 2020 grants, which would be chronologically nearer to prior years) because we believe our cost-effectiveness estimates for 2021 are likely to be more accurate, given that we have been working to improve our CEA over time. While we have now updated this sheet to include information about funds directed in 2022-2024, we have not yet assessed whether to update our cost-effectiveness estimates for pre-2020 funds directed to rely on our cost-effectiveness estimates from 2024. 2. We assume GiveWell-influenced donations given to a top charity in 2020 and 2021 that are not included on the "Grants by funding opportunity" sheet were equally as cost-effective as the average GiveWell grant to that top charity from 2020 or 2021, respectively. We make this simplifying assumption because we have not directly calculated the cost-effectiveness of certain types of donations in this workbook (e.g., donations given directly to charities, scoping grants, incentive grants).
