Come and make your own mosquito trap using recycled materials.

Participants will watch an Smithsonian video on the topic and than engage in listening, speaking and maker activities.
Community, students (9 year olds or older), teachers, younger kids with their parents.This activity aims at raising awareness on what regular people can do to fight Mosquito-Borne Infections. It also motivates people to use the English language to communicate, exchange ideas, and make a difference in their communities.Ask Smithsonian is a weekly video series that unravels some of science's most surprising mysteries. Use an Ask Smiyhsonian video to run a program at your American Space to address themes related Health, Science, Environment, etc. For this activity, we used the 2:21 long video ‘What Are Mosquito-Borne Infections?’ http://goo.gl/O8cH0c - an animation that explains how diseases, like dengue, are transmitted.

- Run a campaign to gather used bottles and pieces of fabric to make the trap.
- Make the Smithsonian video available and visible.
- Advertize the program via social media, school site, posters, etc.
- Make and prototype the trap in advance. http://goo.gl/Le2Xrx
- Make all the materials needed to make the trap available.
- 1 soda bottle - 2 lt. (PET type)
- Scissors
- 1 piece of Wood Sandpaper (# 180)
- Insulating tape or silver tape or any other tape with strong adhesion
- 1 piece of fabric like "tulle" or "micro tulle"
- 1 tea spoon of rice or birdseed (to feed the larvae)
- Engage prospect participants in the topic by sharing topic related materials on school`s social media channels.
- Advertize the program via social media platforms, mailing lists, posters, etc.
- Take pictures during the program and make a video to send participants/parents and share them with the outside community as well.
- Share the experience with the BNC network on the wiki (if you adapted the material) and on A21CS Facebook Group.
