12 | Southern Benguela System boundaries: 28 deg S to 27 deg. E, coastline to 500 m isobath, principal contact person Dr. Lynne Shannon (lynne.shannon@uct.ac.za) | GENERAL NOTE (FROM UCT) ON SOUTHERN BENGUELA OBSERVATIONS: there are (at least) three categories of data concerning the southern Benguela, one of the three focus regions of CT2 and, hence, WP7. For two of these three, access is not straightforward and needs to be handled with appropriate sensitivity: (I) The first are data that are freely available from the internet, such as the NCEP data and satellite-based surface Chl a observations. (II) The second are data that are available through SAEON, the South African Environmental Observation Network. This is an academic body established through UCT Department of Science and Technology, and administered by our National Research Foundation. SAEON seeks to coordinate and support long-term in-situ environmental observation systems. These are, e.g., temperature measurement at depth, nutrient measurements and plankton data. One can apply for data through PAIA requests (SA's Public Access to Information Act). We can assist in identifying the correct contact person, depending on the data set in question. (III) The third are time series of observations that are not available from SAEON, but only through DEFF (SA's Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, newly established as a merger between part of the former Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and the former Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). Again, a PAIA request has to be completed (see, e.g., https://www.environment.gov.za/promotionaccess_informationact for guidance). And again, we can assist in identifying the correct contact person depending on the data set in question. There is no way whatsoever, that we (at UCT) can shortcut this process. DEFF (https://nationalgovernment.co.za/units/view/15/department-of-environment-forestry-and-fisheries-deff). SAEON (http://www.saeon.ac.za/). For cruise data research project policies apply (TRAFFIC/Meteor, etc.).

Collectively, they have provided over 45 million observations of nearly 120 000 marine species, from Bacteria to Whales, from the surface to 10 900 meters depth, and from the Tropics to the Poles. The datasets are integrated so you can search and map them all seamlessly by species name, higher taxonomic level, geographic area, depth, time and environmental parameters. OBIS emanates from the Census of Marine Life (2000-2010) and was adopted as a project under IOC-UNESCO’s International Oceanographic Data and Information (IODE) programme in 2009.

Its initial goal to provide key facts on population dynamics for 200 major commercial species has now grown to having a wide range of information on all species currently known in the world: taxonomy, biology, trophic ecology, life history, and uses, as well as historical data reaching back to 250 years. At present, FishBase covers >33,000 fish species compiled from >52,000 references in partnership with >2,000 collaborators: >300,000 common names and >55,000 pictures.
82 | SeaLifeBase A Global Information System on non-fish marine organisms | FishBase-like information system for all non-fish marine organisms | https://www.sealifebase.ca/ | Global | Historical observations | The long-term goal of this project is to create and maintain a FishBase-like information system for all non-fish marine organisms, ca. 400,000 spp. Of these, marine organisms (about 240,000 spp) are the target of the current project phase. It will not provide yet another authority list of species, but rather, for each species included, make available the biological and ecological information necessary to conduct biodiversity and ecosystem studies, taking advantage of lists of species already available on paper and electronically, and using the scientific names as ‘hook’ to organize biodiversity information.

This data was extended to include the associated fishing gear used, as well as estimates of illegal, unregulated and unreported catch (IUU) and discards at sea. Expressed as catch rates, these results also separated small-scale fisheries from other fishing operations. The dataset covers 1950 to 2014 inclusive. Mapped catch allows study of the impacts of fisheries on habitats and fauna, on overlap with the diets of marine birds and mammals, and on the related use of fuels and release of greenhouse gases. The fine-scale spatial data can be aggregated to the exclusive economic zone claims of countries and will allow study of the value of landed marine products to their economies and food security, and to those of their trading partners.

100 | CCHDO | CTD | https://cchdo.ucsd.edu/ | Global | * | The CCHDO's primary mission is to deliver the highest possible quality global CTD and hydrographic data to users. These data are a product of decades of observations related to the physical characteristics of ocean waters carried out during WOCE, CLIVAR and numerous other oceanographic research programs. Whenever possible we provide these data in three easy-to-use formats: WHP-Exchange (which we recommend for data submissions to the CCHDO), WOCE, and netCDF. The CCHDO also manages public and non-public CTD data to be used for the global Argo and OceanSITES programs. This site is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Observations Division. |
