Eating food heals you! The standard Die Size is 1d6. Improving or decreasing the Die Size moves it along this track:

The primary way to increase Die Size is to add more ingredients. +1 die size per unique ingredient in the meal.

When resting overnight, a tasty meal (13 or more Deliciousness) unlocks the Dinner Perk for the whole next day!
Leftovers can be eaten tomorrow to heal too, of course.
