| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Name | Research Output | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Define purpose | To take advantage of the availability of land, water and unpaid human resource labour at St Joseph's Scholasticate for income generation to reduce the cost of formation
| Identify the key stakeholders | Oblate Province of Southern Africa, General Administration of OMI Congregation in their support of self-sustainability, Oblate agencies for the support of mission, formators and scholastics at Joseph's Theological Institute, Conference of Oblate major SUperiors
| Research into most viable animal husbandry project | A study was made of three animal husbandry opportunities. Chicken, pork and lamb production. It was noted that the chicken industry was unviable as a result of the South African market being flooded by cheap and subsidized chicken from the USA. Local chicken production has collapsed in South Africa. Chicken production in South Africa would be more expensive than retailed chicken in shops. Lamb production required much larger traks of land that is currently available and the production cycle is slow. The pig industry is the only thriving animal husbandry project operating successfully in South Africa with significant technical skill-development support.
| Technical support from Pig Producers' Organization | The South African government provides technical skills development support for any initiative in pig husbandry at no cost. This was seen as an opportunity and a key indicator of the viability of the industry in light of the collapse of the chicken industry in South Africa.

| Understanding air pollution requirements | To reduce air pollution, it was recommended that the project utilise wood shavings in the pig pens. Wood shavings are cheap in the area which has many timber mills. Therefore the cost of wood shavings would be minimal
| Licencing for sale of products to abbatoir | SAPPO will assist in the legal registration of the piggery to sell its products to the market
| Training of staff in techinical pig husbandry | Two scholastics and one lay employee have been identified for training

| Planning | Building plans approval with municiplality, approval of contractor, Determination of construction budget cost with 20% budget differential with contractor, site determination and evaluation, planning enginnering drawings on plumbing and septic tanks, determination of duration of project, provision of water and electricity to site, erection of 10,000 litre water tank for preservation of water supply to piggery at all times, site visit by SAPPO, site visit by vetinerary services, site visit by municipality, erection of a air-control wind breaker to control direction of airflow away from the school, purchase of boar and sows, purchase of starter-pack litter of piglets, storage facilities, establishment of pest control strategies,

The timing for artificial insemination is crucial in gaugingthe market as we have to time the supply of pork to market at moments when there is statistically a lower probability of a glu on the market
| Update launch plan based on forecast | During the initial period, production will not meet the required forecast demand. Forecasting will be taken more seriously in the second year of production.
