Students seem to love using iPads and phones to take photos and share them with their peers. Why not use that love of technology in nature? Instead of frowning upon tech devices, let’s embrace them and use them as a tool for students to share their learning. Set a goal for the day, is it for students to find examples of human impact on the environment? Erosion? Or is it simply to find elements of nature that inspire them? Create a hashtag and have students share their findings on their chosen form of social media (ex. Instagram, twitter, etc). Have them develop their digital citizenship skills, work on being more critical of photos they share and write in a concise manner to communicate their message to an authentic audience.

In this activity students explore their natural environment by attempting to match colours from a paint chip colour palette to colours they find in nature. While participating in this activity students will explore the various elements of their natural environment and will observe many different things they may not normally notice. They will see the way humans have altered the physical environment, the importance of biodiversity and why interactions in the natural environment are key to a healthy community (art, geography, human impact on the natural environment, critical thinking, creativity)

Linking symmetry and poetry to nature and creating an artifact with it.
Students will be led through a lesson on descriptive writing and using adjectives/adverbs. Brainstorming of words will happen and connect it to an animal. Share the words with the class.
After, students will be led through a lesson on making Cinquains and Diamante poems.
Following this activity, link students to how to make mandalas using symmetry.

Take the poetry you create from one lesson and then put it into a card. Take the photo of the mandala you create and put it onto the front of the card. Voila, a piece of poetry written by the student and their own artwork on the front of their card. You could use this as a gift for something (like Mother's Day) OR as an entrepreneurial activity (sell cards to raise money within the school).

The idea behind this activity is to allow students to be able to experience and make connections with their world and what they are learning in class. This activity allows students to explore their local community forest area to collect and record the types of soils they can find on their nature walk. Students are to search their outdoor surroundings looking for sandy, clay, loamy and any other types of soil they can find - peat, moss, silt etc. Students will collect, label their soil in zip-lock bags and record the soil that they found, where they found it and what they observed in the soil in their findings journal. Once back in the classroom, students will share their findings with the class and compare their findings with others. (Science, Language, Math)

- Students will be participating in a nature walk, where they will be selecting an object from nature that they find interesting and are curious about (i.e. leaf, pine cone, twig).
- Students will then take the object with them back into the classroom, where they will write in role, a short story about their nature object, giving it a name (character), a purpose, and 3-4 paragraphs about how they think the object got to the place they found it in!
- Students will be drawing out 2 pages from their story that outline the character and its purpose using the format of their choice. The finished products will be put together in a class storybook! The class will then decide how they will make the book available for the rest of the school to read and learn from.
- When the lesson is complete, students will have an understanding of how to write in role, using descriptive and supportive words, as well as being able to draw using the Visual Arts drawing process.
- This is a two-day lesson designed for the Grade 4 level, as I’d like to focus on students planning their writing process and designing their artwork for a specific purpose. The main curriculum areas for this lesson are Language Arts and Visual Arts.

On a rainy day, or just after it has rained, students will be asked to bring chalk outside and examine their outdoor pavement, field, or any area outdoors that has collected rain water. They will then outline their chosen puddle with chalk and mark their outline with an “M” for morning. Students will then do the same process at lunch time and towards the end of the day. They will measure the distance between each ring of water to see how much the puddle has increased or decreased. Students are able to estimate what they think the distance would be in centimeters or meters, and describe why that would be an appropriate unit of measure. Through this lesson students will participate in a nature walk to draw attention to plants growing on or around their school property. This activity will focus on connecting students with nature through observing and recording changes in the plants on their school property or in the school garden (if applicable). Finally the students will share their learning experiences through a knowledge building circle. (math, measurement, outdoors, nature, gardening, oral communication, science, writing, growth and change in plants). https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1d6dJZrSkU51wRFWKIQKfI-g3_MAGwVA2mr33Uo3EheQ/edit?usp=sharing3, PrimaryMeasurement, Science and Technology, Well Beingklkerr1@lakeheadu.ca
