2/27/25The DOGE Takeover Is Worse Than You Think; What's happening to the US government right now is bad. What comes next is worse.Wiredhttps://www.wired.com/story/doge-worse-than-you-think/?utm_source=nl&utm_brand=wired&utm_mailing=WIR_PoliticsLab_022725&utm_campaign=aud-dev&utm_medium=email&utm_content=WIR_PoliticsLab_022725&bxid=5deea8973f92a44693be8c4d&cndid=59091209&hasha=a340a624a026be053ae8e3b687d1ec18&hashc=8997e8f3d1fbdc0f9d0fa1ac6b9460344873b54870309fc214858f8e6d92d6af&esrc=&utm_term=WIR_PoliticsHubKathy MAnd this is all before the real reductions in force begin, mass purges of civil servants that will soon be conducted, it seems, with an assist from DOGE-modified, automated software. The US government is about to lose decades of institutional knowledge across who knows how many agencies, including specialists that aren’t readily replaced by loyalists. So don’t make any long-term bets on getting your checks on time, keeping your lights on, buying a home for the first time, or enjoying Yosemite. Don’t assume all the things that work now will still work tomorrow. ... It’s worse than you think because by the time the courts catch up the damage will already have been done. It’s worse than you think because the people running the government seem to have no higher mission than to watch it burn.

He and his partner, Mindy Perkovich, also run a flower and vegetable farm that’s been their livelihood for a decade. And they’re the recipients, like many producers in the 73 other conservation districts scattered throughout Colorado, of federal funding through cost-share programs to improve things like soil health, water quality and wildlife habitat. But on Feb. 14, Nolan got the dreaded letter so many federal employees and recipients of federal grants had received some version of. It was from the acting chief of the National Resources Conservation Service, Louis Aspey, terminating its $630,000 grant to the district, which had been using the money for the past 10 months. The NRCS grant was to reach underserved producers and provide equitable access to conservation resources. But, Nolan said, “it does not align with current agency policies regarding DEI.” Social Security. The Social Security Administration announced “significant workforce reductions” agency wide in a news release and clarified Friday that this means cutting 7,000 jobs to get the agency to 50,000 employees. In Colorado, there were nearly 960,000 people benefiting from Social Security or about one-sixth of the state’s population, according to the latest data from 2023. >> See where Colorado’s beneficiaries live
