PURPOSE: To confirm that the horse demonstrates correct basics, and having achieved the thrust required in First Level, now accepts more weight on the hindquarters (collection); moves with an uphill tendency, especially in the medium gaits; and is reliably on the bit. A greater degree of straightness, bending, suppleness, throughness, balance and self-carriage is required than at First Level.RIDER #7976

Collected trot
Bend and balance in turns; moderate lengthening of frame and stride with engagement, elasticity, suspension, straightness and uphill balance5.55.5quickens but strides do not lengthen not do shoulders left and HQ sit, rider behind vertical which could cause horse to hollow rather than lift back

Collected canter
Moderate lengthening of frame and stride with engagement, elasticity, suspension, straightness and uphill balance; consistent tempo; clear balanced transitions66modest- long reins allow horse to fall onto shoulders rather than collecting and sitting for increased thrust

1GAITS (Freedom and regularity)717
38
2IMPULSION (Desire to move forward; elasticity of the steps; suppleness of the back; engagement of the hindquarters)6212needs increased engagement for medium work
39
3SUBMISSION (Willing cooperation; harmony; attention and confidence; acceptance of bit and aids; straightness; lightness of forehand and ease of movements)6.5213tactful and correct aids from rider will continue to address lightness- issues with right lead
40
4RIDER’S POSITION AND SEAT (Alignment; posture; stability; weight placement; following mechanics of the gaits)717at times rider gets behind vertical rather than becoming stronger in core
41
5RIDER’S CORRECT AND EFFECTIVE USE OF AIDS (Clarity; subtlety; independence; accuracy of test)6.516.5shorter reins would help rider keep horse in a consistent frame rather than allowing him to get strung out/long in the frame and onto the forehand
42
Talented rider on attractive and capable horse. Some lovely moments. Work on up transition to right lead- rider can collapse to the inside in both directions and this will impact the transition. Try to keep reins short to help clarify for horse how much room he has so that he maintains his uphill balance rather than lengthening his frame onto his shoulders. Increased engagement will improve medium gaits. VERY LARGE canter circles impact this score significantly!!
