To know before you start running :

A/S keysSlightly faster level transitions; when you touch bandage girl press A (Q on azerty) to advance to the next level without having to skip the replay first. The S key does the same, but for exiting to level

detail levelCan vary a lot from config to config, opening the game with the launch option -lowdetail or -ultralowdetail (right click the game on steam, properties, launch options) helps with framerate issues and can
help reduce loads.

Rivatuner(resource page) This software will help the game run more consistently on your pc. 'consistently', in this case, means fewer lag spikes (if they're not caused by hardware issues). Loading times should be
affected too. Even if your pc's great, if the game is running at, say, 60.3 fps instead of 60.0, the physics will be subtly screwed up. This is also the fix for 7-19x problems. Add supermeatboy.exe on the
program's list, set it to 60fps and leave the program open in the background while running

Deleting your save is required between each attempt to do so on the Steam version, turn off cloud sync for the game and either, find the file
( ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Super Meat Boy\UserData\savegame.dat) and delete or move it or use third parties ("reseters") found in the ressource page of speedrun.com

To check if you get a slowdown, do it on 1-3, if you get a 1.43s you have setup the slowdown correctly.

With vertical momentum, jumping from the higest point and mid air repositionning you can walljump up to 6 tiles vertically (dual jump helps too). (see faster 6-5)

The backspace key can be used to back out of a level that you entered by accident quicker than menuing, be wary as it can cause a soflock if pressing A or S then backspace in the transition just after.

You need to complete 85 dark levels to unlock dark fetus by having an A+ time in the light version

Choosing a route can be complex and have some variants depending on which levels you are confortable with when starting it, you can see the most common ones in theguide here

If you find a dark level too hard, you can replace it with some of easier dark levels like (you will have to do the light version before too) : 2-20x or 3-12x that are fast and quite safe. And 1-20x, 2-15x that are slower but very safe

For each chapter, do the light world, then the dark world, then the boss. Since glitch girl only starts spawning after the boss is cleared, you never have to worry about her.

Other categoriesThe backspace key also allows to skip the credits, be wary as you have to press another key before backspace to skip the cutscene then backspace out of the credits or fetus won't count as beaten.

When running 106% it's typically faster to complete the warp then the level that the warp is in than replaying the level for the warp but there are exceptions.

Another type of wrong warp (unrelated to bandage dupe and allowed in 106%) will place meat boy on the 5-1 warp if exiting once then beating the kid warp(slower but safer than doing fast 5-1 twice)

Regarding the strats

If starting to run the game, it’s easier to try to save time by not dying and doing reliable strats than trying to save time with skips and fast strats in the levels (with the exception of Brownie skip).

When estimating if a strat is worth, test yourself on both the current and new enough to give you an idea of the time difference and the difficulty/your consistency on it and try to evaluate if the risk is worth it.

Doing an IL of a single segment strat can help, but always be sure you’re consistent enough on a new strat before including it (especially in the end of the run).

Getting a strat at least 3 times in a row in practice before putting it in a run is a good way to build up consistency at first. You can make up your own methods.
