This set of spreadsheets contain resources to be used to support Virginia's Standards of Learning for Coding. Students who traverse the activities contained within we believe will be well-equipped to take high school advanced placement computer science. You can view a master list of resources or see the same resources grouped by grade level tabs. This page contains reference information and weblinks.

Terminology

computational thinkingapplication of mathematical concepts in problem solving

sequenceslogical structure in programming concerning the order of steps
10
loops
sequence of instructions that repeats, can be set to operate when a condition is met
11
events
triggers that start or stop parts of code, such as a function; i.e., blink the screen when the mouse button is pressed
12
variables
like variables in algebra, variables are a programming structure that can hold values of numbers or strings of text
13
functions
blocks of code that can be reused and called within a program, sometimes by an event
14
conditionals
a construct where an action takes place based upon a condition; many times called if...then or if...else
15
algorithms
computer procedure outlining steps to take; sometimes considered a recipe for a computer program or portion of a program
16
debugging
the coder's process of testing their work, discovering errors, and finding corrections for these errors
17
problem solving
skill that is required for, and developed through, coding. Programs typically help solve a problem, and the technique is used in debugging and trial and error
18
digital citizenship
development of citizenship skills using digital tools; writing code that don't violate ethical norms

abstractionmanaging complexity
