Rick and Morty episode ratings: full data and analysis

3
What this is
4
Supporting data analysing all 90 aired Rick and Morty episodes, benchmarked against nine other long-running animated comedies (3,067 rated episodes total).
5
6
Data source
7
IMDb public bulk data files, title.ratings.tsv joined to title.episode.tsv on the episode tconst. Downloaded 23 July 2026 from https://datasets.imdbws.com/. Ratings and vote counts drift daily, so figures will not match IMDb exactly after this date. Rotten Tomatoes scores were collected manually from rottentomatoes.com and are noted per season.

How to use this file

The 'Episodes' tab is the only place with hand-entered judgement: the Canon column. Every figure on 'Season summary' and 'Episode slot' is a live formula reading from it. Change a 1 to a 0 in the Canon column and the summary tabs recalculate. Disagree with my tagging? Retag it and see whether the conclusion survives. It mostly does.

The one tag I would not defend

S9E8 (Rickuiem Mort a Dream) is flagged canon on the grounds that the Sympathid parasite's effect on Morty appeared to carry into E9 (in my opinion). I have not verified that it actually does. Treat it as the weakest cell in the file. Flipping it moves season 9's canon average from 8.60 to 8.80 and changes nothing else material.

Caveats that matter

Canon tagging is subjective. Seasons 1-7 follow general fan consensus; 8-9 were tagged per my opinion. Causation is unresolved: canon episodes may rate higher because more effort goes into them, or because invested viewers rate arc episodes generously. This data cannot separate the two. The model explains about a third of episode-to-episode variation. The rest is whether the episode was good, which does not decompose further. S9E9 had only 1,744 votes at time of download and its rating will move, as will all other S9 episode ratings. Season 9 finale hasn't aired as of time making this, but likely won't have much effect on the data. Furthermore, all data was based on IMDb's ratings. I judged it to be the most accurate, but this model would probably be better had I included other sources. Given their small sample sizes though, I decided to not include them, as for my goals, IMDb ratings more than sufficed.
