Mark BreenVail School DistrictChief Technology OfficerEducationK-12eAC - eduroam-US Advisory CommitteeYesMy interest in serving on the eduroam Advisory Committee stems from a deep commitment to expanding eduroam adoption across K-12 institutions, particularly in Arizona, and contributing to the broader national conversation about K-12 participation in research and education roaming networks.

I was inspired by a presentation at an Internet2 CommEx conference where the Nebraska REN shared their successful strategy for achieving widespread K-12 eduroam adoption. Their story demonstrated the transformative potential of eduroam for K-12 education, and I was determined to bring that vision to Arizona.

As a result, I led the Vail School District to become the first K-12 district in Arizona to implement eduroam across our entire network. We recently deployed nearly 1,000 eduroam hotspots serving the Tucson area. Our implementation was strategic and comprehensive—we adopted a single SSID approach, removing all other SSIDs (except guest) and making eduroam our primary network. This ensures all staff and students authenticate using secure, profile-based credentials that automatically place users on the appropriate network and VLAN.

This intentional approach accelerates adoption by ensuring our entire community can seamlessly and automatically connect to eduroam hotspots when visiting participating institutions. Currently, eduroam availability in Arizona is largely limited to universities and community colleges, which is why I'm passionate about serving as an advocate for broader K-12 adoption. I understand that the true power of eduroam lies in its network effects—the more institutions that participate, the more valuable it becomes for everyone.

I am excited to join the eduroam Advisory Committee to learn from peers nationwide, share our K-12 implementation experience, and help develop strategies that encourage eduroam adoption across diverse constituencies, particularly in underrepresented K-12 communities.		YesI have been actively engaged with the Internet2 community through several initiatives. I participated in the Low Latency, High Throughput Networking for All (LoLa for All) working group, where I learned and contributed to discussions on improving network performance for research and education applications.

I have attended multiple Internet2 Community Exchange (CommEx) conferences, which have provided valuable opportunities to stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in research and education networking, as well as to network with peers across the community.

At the regional level, I maintain active involvement with Sun Corridor Network, our local Research and Education Network (REN). Through this partnership, I work collaboratively on initiatives that benefit our institution and the broader regional networking community.
