The following is a list of activities and their advisors which will be offered during the 2018-2019 school year. Activities take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays. Some clubs are held in the fall, some in the spring and some are full-year activities. Announcements will be made well in advance of the beginning of the club so that students will have an opportunity to sign up. There is a 3:15 pm late bus for the students remaining for extra help and/or clubs. Check the club bulletin board outside the cafeteria for more information.

Orchestra
Mrs. WinschelViolin, Viola, Cello and Bass students. Open to all experienced string instrument students (all grades). This performing group meets on Wednesdays until 3:15 pm The repertoire is rigorous and includes both classical and pop. The group performs for both school and community activities throughout the year which culminates at Lake Compounce in early June. This club will begin Wedneday, September 26th.

Animal Lover's
Club
Ms. CunninghamFor 6th grade students. Come learn about rescue organizations, volunteer organizations, careers working with animals, how to help and care for animals. Starting Wednesday, October 3 in Room A14.

Art ClubMrs. EdwardsThe Art Club exists for several purposes. It serves to enrich the school environment with artwork aligned with Trumbull’s 6-8 art curriculum. Through the years art club members have painted murals on hallway walls, on canvas for backdrops, and have painted on ceiling tiles in classrooms. The Hillcrest Art Club collaborates with the Trumbull community when our artistic talents are called upon. For example, in 2015, the Hillcrest Art Club designed and painted several wooden signs for its annual Holiday Open House Tour. Last year, Hillcrest art club members will create large wooden assembleges to be displayed in Hillcrest showcases and bulletin boards. Art club will meet on Mondays, immediately after school until 3:15 and run for 10 weeks. Start date will be announced.

ASL Club
(American Sign Language)
Ms FitzpatrickThe American Sign Language (ASL) Club gives students an opportunity to learn ASL letters, numbers and basic vocabulary. Students will learn about ASL in pop culture and the history of ASL in America. Club runs Mondays beginning October 1.

Chess ClubMrs. MonacoLearn the ins and outs of this exciting game with The Chess Club of Fairfield County.
Open to all students in grades 6-8. All skill levels are welcome. The Chess Club will meet in The Library/Media Center from 2:30-3:15 PM. The first session is Thursday, September 13. We will meet on Mondays and Thursdays for five weeks-last chess club is Thursday, October 18. Chess sets will be provided.

ChoraleersMrs. WintersThe Hillcrest Choraleers is an extension of the choral program at Hillcrest. Performances occur both in school and extend to experiences in the community, as well. It is an auditioned group comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, and offers a smaller ensemble experience in choral music literature. Rehearsals are held after school on Thursdays, until 3:15 pm (as we approach performance dates, rehearsals will extend to 3:45 pm). Audition packets can be found in the Chorus room. Choraleers are going to start rehearsing Thursday, 9/27.

Crafters

Mrs. Hayes
A hands-on club where we will choose a few crafts as a group to work on. (in the past we have created jewelry, locker magnets, flower pens, wood art, etc.) We will decide what materials are needed. As a group we will work on our crafts every week. We will then discuss how to best market our crafts for a sale to the school. Each student in the group is given one free creation. All Proceeds go directly back into the club for materials for the following year. Space is limited, first come first serve. Wednesdays 2/27-4/24.

Drawing ClubMrs. EdwardsDrawing Club is for the serious artist who shows potential in his/her drawing skills and would like the opportunity to further those skills. Students will complete artworks in graphite, charcoal and pastels. Drawing Club will meet on Mondays, immediately after school until 3:15, and run for 10 weeks. Drawing club will begin in the spring.

Football Club

Open to all students in grades 6, 7 and 8 who are fans of football. Each week, members will share thoughts regarding the games played in the previous week along with discussing current issues in the NFL. Each week, members will also make their picks for the weekend games. This club meets from October through Super Bowl Sunday on Thursdays in the Computer Lab A10. Start date is October 11.

Game club is a great way to learn new games, improve your skill in games you already know, and meet new friends. All are welcome. Come alone or bring a friend. Meets on Mondays, 9/24-12/3 in the Guidance office.

Garden ClubMs. WinschelThe Garden Club meets all year on Mondays and is opened to all students. Students will get their hands dirty taking care of the courtyard and plants in the greenhouse. They will also run a plant sale. Club is on Mondays starting 9/24.

Interact Club

Ms. Barrett
Interact is a service club affiliated with the Rotary Club International. Our students participate in activities on the local, national and international level. Previously, we have sponsored coat, food , and book drives, as well as aiding those whose homes were destroyed by disasters. We have also raised money for military veterans, cancer research, and the poor. We are looking for enthusiastic students to join Interact Club and be part of this wonderful service organization. Students have lots of fun, make new friends and experience the joy of doing something that is meaningful and helpful to others. Interact meets after school on Thursdays in Room B-4. Our first meeting is Sept. 20. Come, bring a friend and your ideas. We hope to see many new faces this year!

Jazz EnsembleMr. WhitmoyerJazz Ensemble is for 6th, 7th, AND 8th grade students interested in performing Jazz, Latin, and Pop style Music. Instrumentation is limited to Saxes, Brass, and Rhythm section. I am looking for students to play guitar, piano and bass. Jazz Ensemble meets each Monday until 3:20 PM. Jazz Ensemble will begin on Monday, September 17th.

Come dance and sing! We will provide Just Dance videos from You Tube to follow. Bring a friend, make a friend. Space is limited to 25. Look for the sign on the bulletin board outside the cafeteria. Club will take place in the winter.

Knots ClubMrs. SaundersStudents will have the chance to knit, crochet, or weave while relaxing with friends new and old. No experience necessary! Meets on Mondays, 3/18-6/3

Martial ArtsMs. FitzpatrickThe Martial Arts Club is open to all students. No previous experience is necessary. Students will learn basic etiquette, blocks, punches, and kicks. Students need to wear gym clothes. Club will run Mondays beginning January 7.

Math Club

Math Club is a great way to practice and reinforce key math skills after school with the assistance of teachers and Trumbull High School Honors Students. Please bring math materials that you would like to work on and students will be placed in small groups. This club will meet on Wednesdays beginning in November and ending in April.

Math CountsMrs. FormanekMath Counts - Do you like math? Come join Math Counts! Math Counts is a national program that gives you the opportunity to engage in mathematics that is non-competitive, fun and different from "textbook math." There are opportunities to compete at the end of the year. We will be meeting once a week on Thursdays in B1, starting 10/11.

Model Congress is a new club at Hillcrest that strives to assist students in connecting classroom learning to real world knowledge. Through simulation of the legislative process, students will interact on the issues facing our Federal, State and Local governments. Students will have an opportunity to engage in committee meetings, debates, and legislative sessions. We will meet on Thursdays, beginning in January.

National Jr. Honor
Society
Mrs. KitchenerNational Junior Honor Society is by invitation only in the spring of 7th or 8th grade. NJHS is responsible for the 7th Grade Fall Festival, Relay for Life, the Penny Wars, and supporting several school activities like the 6th Grade tours and serving as Back to School Night guides. Members are committed to lead and serve within the Hillcrest community. Meetings will be held in B5 and announced through Google Classroom. First committee meeting is 9/17.

National History ClubMs. MarcuccioAre you a 6th, 7th or 8th grader who loves history? Do you want to showcase your love for history in an exciting way? Well, we want you to join us for Connecticut History Day! Connecticut History Day is a program for students that encourages exploration of local, state, national and world history on a competitive level. The theme this year is Triumph & Tragedy in History. You can make websites, posters, movies, write an essay, even produce a performance. There is something for all students. If you are interested in learning more about history day, please attend the meeting on Thursday, September 27th in room A3, Miss. Marcucci’s Room.

Peer TutoringMrs. DexterThe Hillcrest Peer Tutoring Program is a free service offered to the entire Hillcrest community, grades 6-8. A select group of 8th grade students work as tutors after school, helping students with homework, study and organization skills and other assignments in all academic areas. Any student who needs help is welcome to attend our club. We will meet in A-13 on Wednesdays after school starting in early/mid October.

Pottery ClubMrs. SaundersStudents will get their hands dirty while creating beautiful and functional masterpieces out of clay. Come out and clay! Meets on Mondays from 12/10-3/11.

Homework Club
Ms. Bucci
Open to students in grades 6-8 by teacher and counselor recommendation. Walk-ins also accepted if there is room. This club is intended for students who need extra support in a structured setting for homework completion/project management/test preparation/organization. Will take place in Room A13 on Wednesdays afterschool from 2:35-3:15 pm. Club will run from December 5th – May 15th (Trimesters 2 & 3).

Sports ClubMr. SeltenreichThe Hillcrest Sports Club provides students with an opportunity to participate in games and physical activities that promote social interaction in a non-competitive environment. The club is open to boys and girls in each grade and will begin in early December and run through at least April.

Statistical Math Club is open to students who would like to become statistical thinkers. Students will participate in the American Statistical Association’s Poster Competition. Club will start in January 2019, meeting in Room B15

StitchesMrs. MaffeiSTITCHES is an after school sewing club that will meet in April and May. As a group we complete a fun sewing project. Basic machine sewing skills are recommended.

Winter Percussion
Ensemble
Mr. WhitmoyerWinter Percussion is an indoor music and marching activity. It is open to 6th , 7th, and 8th grade students that play mallets and percussion, as well as possibly including piano, Guitar and Bass. This activity begins in mid –November. Rehearsals are usually held in the evenings, twice a week from 6-8 pm. As the performance season approaches, we do have Saturday rehearsals and performances during the months of January, February, and March. We perform 5-6 times in area high schools. The activity concludes in early April. The may be a small participation fee.

Young AuthorsMrs. RyanIf you enjoy creative writing, this is the club for you! Members meet each Monday in the Media Center to write and share their work. Young Authors will begin on Monday, September 24th.
