Useful for library
|0.0.2||Thomson One (IE Only)|
Paragraphs used where fewer words and bullet lists would be desirable. They sure are serious about making it clear that this resource only works in IE--it's even in the URL.
Direct access to databases is peobably very useful, but crucial points of information for use are buried in paragraph text here
Since critical info is buried, this page may result in a lot of calls/emails to librarian trying to clear it up
Torn between 1 and 2 here but mostly it works because there is less text than Thomson One page
|0.0.4||Business Source Complete|
Flaws similar to Thomson One page. Need fewer words and lists/bullet points.
There's less to know about using Factiva (no browser issues or add ins) so the wall of text doesn't detract as much from the usefulness
Home Page/Books and Journals tab
Good search tool/table formatting without excess text
|0.0.2||Home Page/Guides and FAQs tab||https://johnson.library.cornell.edu/||2|
Good pathway page, just a list of links to get to the desired info
Would be more useful with a search feature. If the information you are seeking isn't one of the most popular choices, you have to click to a new page to search.
Entrepreneurship Research Resources from Cornell University Library: Home
Too much text, drastic navigation change. Amount of info is overwhelming and does not track to the question ("How to create a business plan") that was clicked to get here. Still need to search for desired info without clear indication of where it is.
New students probably would find guidance dealing with a large complex task very useful.
|0.0.3||Home Page/Help tab||https://johnson.library.cornell.edu/||2||1|
People seeking help probably have more questions than reserve renewals and wanting to email the librarian.
Big wall of text and way too much happy talk (this is in contrast to most of the site, which though it uses a lot of paragraphs usually keeps them short). Users wanting to know "about" the library probably have practical questions rather than a burning desire for a long treatise on the library's mission or testimonial quotes from faculty. A link to FAQs is buried in the text wall below the fold. Also far below the fold is information about visitor access for non Cornell users. Ironically, buried in the paragraph about visitor privileges is a link to the central library web page with information about visitor privileges--that page is much better written for the web with scannable headings and briefer text. Maybe PROSPECTIVE students care about how awesome the library is (although I doubt it) so then put the testimonials in stuff in admissions brochures.
Any useful information is well obscured. Site visitors probably don't want to visit the Bout page that much, and if they do it is more likely to be for library hurs, location and policy. These would be useful things to know, but they aren't here.
Probably necessary to have an About page since it is an expected thing.
It's difficult for me to know if this is useful for users or not. Analytics would be good to see if people really use this feature or not.
Probably makes librarians happy to showcase new acquisitions, might also be a general univeristy library policy to do this. Libraries for other disciplines may see more use of this feature but my guess is that Johnson members are very focused on databases and course reserves.
|1.2||Faculty & PhD Resources||https://johnson.library.cornell.edu/faculty||0||Too much text||1|
Useful information obscured in wall of text
Faculty are not patient and they are going to call the librarian every time rather than wade through this
|1.3||Alumni & Friends||https://johnson.library.cornell.edu/alumni||1|
List of links are useful but there is too much text. Alumni visiting this page are probably focused on what they can access and how they do it. Paragraphs aren't long but would still be better broken up in bullet points that quickly highlight the path.
|1.4||Off Campus Access||https://johnson.library.cornell.edu/offcampusaccess||0|
Paragraphs that should be lists, links etc. Some procedures that should be stepped are written as paragraphs.
This is probably highly needed information for users, so it should probably be a high priority for cleanup
Well designed for accessing a long list of information. Good table formatting
Great! Not much text, clean and spare
Too bad it's almost completely useless since all it contains is a comment that the library does hold workshops and has a link to email the library if you want to know about them. You can't actually find out anything about workshops here.
The problem here is that this takes you out of the business library to the central library site.
