100 Grannies joined forces with the Johnson County LWV and the Burr Oak Preservation Society at the Iowa City Public Library to show the movie, Kiss the Ground, narrated by Woody Harrison. This movie demonstrates how all over the world soil is reclaimed and refurbished by simple appropriate actions that almost anyone can do, Using crop rotation, staying away from chemical fertilizers, no till, which are methods that replace the nitrogen into the soil, and bring back healthy soil within 14 years. The best example of this is farmers following sustainable practices, and the area around the China Wall which was a desert changed within 14 years to a beautiful landscape of trees and plants.

Just before the LWVIA Convention, I organized the Mississippi River Network event celebrating the River. Over 20 members and friends met at the Dubuque Brewery and enjoyed a lunch by the river. Many people walked along the River Walk. We used our smart phones to write to our Congress people concerning the Farm Bill. I shared information about the Mississippi River and how important it is to care for it in a sustainable way.
I regularly write reports for the JCLWV Voter as well as the state of IA Voter.

Msd rate commission LWV metro STL and LWV Mo and Missouri coalition for the environment
11/9/20236 hours
St. Louis msd final decision on rate increase. That was reviewed by the Rate Commission for 165 days this summer and fall. I am League delegate). They approved rate commission report. Rejected proposal to transport sludge to Il for burning or land composting. Did select fluidized incineration of sludge as a lower carbon that does not require land decomposition and reduce nutrients into Mississippi. The incinerators will also remove PFAS. This will not require trucking of sludge. In the future they hope to capture the energy from the incinerators = module needed is another $0.3 billion
Board of trustee approved the rate commission report
Projects will continue to allow STL msd to meet the consent decree to reduce nutrient and pollution into the water systems (major msd facility is next to the Mississippi River. It will reduce PFAS and other pollution. The incinerators will decrease air pollution by 90%. There will be minimal nutrient contamination of the rivers of the regions. The storm water funding will fund flooding and river erosion including the Mississippi river
Information to members for Feb units and request for LWV metro STL take action to support both the waste water rate increase and the storm water flooding

Made contact with Colin Wellenkamp, Brandt Thorington, and Mitch Reynold (Mayor of La Crosse) in regard to Saving Mississippi River Together (SMRT) Act. MRCTI is thinking of renewing their efforts for reconciling the SMRT bill with MRRRI bill or going it on their own.
Mayor Mitch Reynolds will be making contact again in May to update LWV UMRR ILO on their progress and how LWV UMRR ILO may engage with the endeavor.
Any bill that will support conservation, restore water quality and improve habitat along the Mississippi River is something that the league can support and endorse.

I'm compiling some chloride research by the DNR demonstrating that Wisconsin waterways are suffering. I'm am also compiling some resources and list of organizations like "Wisconsin Salt Wise" materials for perusal. I will have these items prepared for July meeting.
I'd like to see other states that make up UMRR work to reduce chloride in waterways. Chlorides in any water source are a pollutant and impact water quality, habitat and organisms life.
