Teachers and others can create free one-question polls for use in the classroom or outside. Students see a poll question projected in class or in their email, such as questions about the difficulty of a concept being taught in class, or difficulty or degree of engagement of a homework assignment, or interest in a selection of possible next topics in class or for a field trip. They respond from a feature phone or smartphone with sms text messaging.

Some teachers use Poll everywhere as a free classroom "clicker" to get quick feedback from students in class. Its success depends on students having a cellphone with sms text messaging capacity and bringing it with them to class.
1
Being able to only post one question at a time may be a serious limitation in some cases, but for a fee this can be addressed. If students don't have or bring cell phones to class this can be a problem. If there is no Internet access in the classroom that can be a challenge.

Doodle is one of several meeting scheduling software programs. It's free and easy to use. You can schedule face-to-face or online meetings with anyone: students, colleagues, friends, or family. You can use it with a small or large group where it has taken, or could take, a lot of effort to figure out a meeting date that everyone or most people can make.

You log in, select a number of possible dates and times for a meeting (I generally start with dates at least a week away). If you have meeting participants in different time zones, remember to select times (in your time zone) that are not inconvenient for those in other time zones. When you have reviewed the dates and times to make sure you could attend them all, you enter the email addresses of meeting participants, and then -- if you wish -- include a message indicating what the meeting is about and when the deadline is for completing the Doodle. It's as easy as that.

You can choose to receive a notice when each person completes the Doodle, if you wish, and when the deadline has been reached you can see what date/time (and perhaps backup date/time) are best, and then email everyone that a date/time (and back up date/time) has been chosen.

Note: Doodle participants in different time zones receive the notice with meeting times re-set for their time zone.

This tool has saved me, and other colleagues, a lot of time. I sometimes use its remind feature a couple of days before the Doodle deadline to send a reminder to those who have not completed the Doodle yet.

For students, using a tool like this may take some time to get comfortable with but, once they do, it will make scheduling meetings with their family members; friends; club, association or religious organization members; and work colleagues much easier. It might be interesting to do a lesson on time zones if they are scheduling meetings with friends or family members in other time zones.
2
The challenges are not with the tool, but with the participant users. Typically you will need to remind them to go to the Doodle site (provide your Doodle web address in each reminder) to complete it by the deadline you have set.

Either each student tracks a player or each student gets a team. For math, students can track game data over time to explore the many Maths that relate to data processing and communicating that data appropriately. For ELA, teachers can have students use the data generated to create a player or team journal that shares the perspective of the player or team based on the data from each game.

Not all students are into sports or basketball. This is a great tool for those that like basketball, but may not be a useful simulation for those that don't like it. To keep data and teams, students or the teacher need a free registration which is painless.

Blogging allows a safe way of publishing writing and giving peer feedback. Blogger allows for many levels of publication from completely private (only by invite) access to the blog to wide open to the general public. Collaboration is possible to have multiple students working on the same blog. Settings allow for all submissions and responses to go through the teacher for approval before they are posted. Tons of integration options with other Google tools depending on the focus of the blog.
2
To be able to take advantage of all of the powerful features available, teachers will need to dig into the tool a little to be aware of where settings are made and how to set the stage to best meet their classroom goals. Students can create digital comics that are simple quite quickly. Students that love Marvel Comics / Movies / Television shows enjoy being able to tell stories with this tool.

Although most of the interface is quite straight forward, the interface can be a bit quirky or difficult at times. Forms have many uses for teachers and for students. Teachers can quickly generate many types of formative assessments as well as evaluative assessments. If the teacher is comfortable with technology, many of the results of assessments can be automatically scored and reported. Students can create surveys to distribute to public to gather real data on local issues as well as create peer study materials to help prepare for teacher assessments. The number of sharing options ensures that your form can be easily provided to most any audience you desire. As a Google resource, Google Forms integrates with most of the other Google tools in ways that are unmatched by other survey type tools.
2
Although basic usage of Google Forms is easy to set up and share with end users, what is done with the data and the level of automation a teacher may wish can run into some pretty geeky waters. This is a tool that really allows for a wide differentiation of implementations based on user's level of technological comfort and experience. Creating Forms requires a free google account which some people do not wish to have. End users do not need an account to fill out a form shared with them.

There is a bit of a learning curve for most users to get familiar with the tools. Although there are some very nice transition options and innovations in Prezi, users can often get carried away with the special effects and loose sight of creating an effective presentation. Compared to just making a rubric in a spreadsheet, the interface in rubistar seems dated and a bit clunky. Other than the preset categories, it was not apparent what advantage this program offers users. Some subjects have a good variety of criteria and others, like math simply have a couple of options. Schoology is a free learning management system that teachers and professional developers can use to organize online or hybrid instruction. It is fairly easy to use but isn't elegant nor does it have many bells and whistles. You can have multiple courses and within a course content can be organized into folders. Within folders you can have discussions, tests/quizes, links to documents, images, or webpages. It is easy to create assignments with due dates. There is also a nice running event list so that participants can see what is due in the coming week. Schoology has worked well for me with lively professional discussions. It would be an easy way to help ESL and ABE students learn how to use a learning management system if their program did not already have one.
2It can be easy to get lost in the organizational structure when first using Schoology.

Very Engaging: Students are enthused to use the tool or resource
I've had students use this for both prepared and unprepared responses, and even had some read passages aloud so I could evaluate pronunciation. Students can also work in pairs or small groups to submit an interview or role play. I've also asked students to show me around their homes, introduce friends and family, or just reflect on their progress and concerns.

The only challenges I've had were with students who couldn't log on to their computers. With that level of digital literacy, any website is difficult to navigate.

I use this tool for reviewing learned information, vocabulary, etc, with my ESL classes, and have used it with middle school science classes in the past. All ages of students have truly enjoyed using it as a review, though it can get a bit too competitive with middle schoolers. I haven't had anything but smiles and laughs with adults. I don't always require "contestants" to answer in the form of a question, though I think that doing so is great practice for ELLs in forming questions.

I created my first infographic over the weekend. I made a family tree with the names of various relatives, for vocabulary practice. It's fairly time consuming (for me, at least) but fun. And now that I have it, I wonder why I bothered to recreate this particular wheel. However, I'm working on designing my syllabus as an infographic, which is challenging but will provide relevant information in a unique (and hopefully easier to view) format.

I wouldn't dream of having my current beginning/intermediate ESL students try to tackle this site. But it's been fun for me to play around with and I can see some potential here to present info in an engaging way.

I have used Kahoot! with many groups, including my Beginner and Advanced ESL classes. Every one of my students reported that they really enjoyed learning and reviewing vocabulary with Kahoot!.

We have laptops for all of our students. I suppose that if you don't have that, it might be more challenging. I've not used Kahoot! on a phone, iPad, etc, so I don't know how well it works on those kinds of devices.
