12 January 20165 Pinkfeet were with a group of 46 Greylags, 47 Canada Geese completed the goose count. Also 31 Mallard (only), 6 Gadwall, drake Wigeon, 14 Pochard, 17 Tufteds, f.Goldeneye, 6 Little and 1 G.C.Grebe and 37 Coots. A walk behind the dam wall produced a couple of Tree Sparrows on feeders and a flock of 83 Yellowhammers.

Goldeneye, drake Common Scoter (the first ever January record here), 58 Coots, 12 G.C.Grebes, c110 Lapwings, 12 Golden Plover south, 13 Common Snipe, 70 Fieldfares, 50 Redwings and the female Stonechat.

18 January 2016Two adult Whooper Swans were present early morning but departed SSE at 0955. Also 119 Canada Geese, 75 Greylags, 2 Goldeneye including a nice drake, a pair of displaying Sparrowhawks, A Skylark flew N and the female Stonechat still present.

31 January 201648 Greylags, 6 Gadwall, 1 Shoveler, 35 Tufted Ducks, 39 Pochard, 3 G.C.Grebes and a Brambling on the feeders.  A total of 88 species recorded for the month/year though basically things a bit 'same old, same old' as is fairly typical this time of year without any cold snaps to get things moving. Gull roost has been disappointing so far though lots of big gulls are arriving after dark and have probably come some distance to what is presumably a traditional roost site for these birds, big gulls living for 20+ years.

1 February 2016A juvenile Iceland Gull in the gull roost was the highlight, the first of the winter and hopefully an incentive for more people to get down there looking. Also the drake Shoveler, 6 Gadwall, quite a few Common Snipe off the west bank at dusk and a Tawny Owl calling. The ad. male Mute Swan seen on 29 Jan. had been colour-ringed (as an adult) on 1 Sept. 2014 at Clay Cross, later being sighted at Thrybergh CP near Rotherham on 7 Dec 2014 and at Ogston on 19 Jan 2015.

2 February 2016An adult Iceland Gull arrived at 1500 but unfortunately didn't stay to roost, slipping away unseen before 1525, the second in two days after none all winter. Also drake Shoveler, 2 Gadwall, c20 Tufteds, 27 Pochard, 1 G.C.Grebe, c40 Siskins at Milltown Inlet. A leucistic Black-headed Gull was in the roost.

3 February 20168 Pintail, with five stunning drakes, arrived midday and stayed till dusk. Also drake Shoveler, single Goosander and a Raven. Behind the dam wall 5 Tree Sparrows were on the feeders and 86 Yellowhammers still in fields below Woodcock Plantation.

4 February 2016A Shelduck, drake Shoveler, Gadwall, 29 Pochard, 23 Tufted Ducks, 1 Goldeneye, Common Snipe, Brambling on the feeders etc. Gull roost fairly well attended but nothing unusual, best being a 2nd/3rd winter Yellow-legged Gull and a leucistic B.H.Gull.

10 February 2016Few highlights recently with the best being a probable first-winter Caspian Gull in the roost on Sunday (7th). This morning a pair of Shoveler, just one drake Gadwall (though ten yesterday), 25 Tufteds, 32 Pochard, drake Goosander, 5 Little and 1 G.C.Grebe, 7 C.Buzzards, male Kestrel and an adult female Peregrine at 1050.

11 February 201627 Pochard, 23 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, Oystercatcher through early morning - the first of the year, c25 Common Snipe and an adult Peregrine while 2 Skylarks flew north.

12 February 2016A frustrating morning with a small party of geese flying over unseen that were thought to be Bean Geese and a distant, flying away Asio Owl sp. most likely Short-eared. Confirmed sightings were 6 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 31 Pochard, 26 Tufteds, 6 G.C.Grebes and  12 Golden Plover south.

13 February 2016Eighteen Whooper Swans flew quite low north-west at 1110. Also 2 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 29 Tufted Ducks, 27 Pochard, 3 Goldeneye, 1 Goosander, 3 G.C.Grebes, 6 C.Buzzards and a Peregrine. The male Brambling showed well occasionally on the hide feeders.

14 February 2016An Egyptian Goose was recorded in the Bird Log in the member's hide and was presumably present in the afternoon though no further details were supplied. Also 2 Shoveler,  30 Pochard, 2 Goldeneye, 4 G.C.Grebes, juv. Peregrine and a light northerly movement of Common Gulls through the morning, all adults.

15 February 201658 Canada and 31 Greylag Geese, 5 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 25 Tufted Ducks, 36 Pochard (the most all winter), 6 Little and 3 G.C.Grebes, 104 Lapwings. An adult Peregrine zapped a Coot on the west bank but was accidently flushed by passers-by, the victim staggered down to the water's edge looking very distressed but recovered remarkably quickly.

2 March 2016Four different adult Kittiwakes went through during the day; the first arrived at 1010 and remained until joined by another at 1130, both leaving together to the west shortly after. The third was present 1320-1415 before leaving south and then another was reported on   Birdnet for 1600. In addition a juvenile male Goshawk was seen at 1315 with 12 Gadwall, 2 Wigeon, 5 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, a Curlew and a Barn Owl at dusk.

8 March 2016A cold dull morning enlivened by a fly-through Twite over the west car park at 1105 which went NW  unfortunately unseen. Formerly a regular autumn/winter visitor this (if accepted) would be only the fourth record this century. Also 10 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 2 Wigeon and 5 Goldeneye. Late news of six Curlews yesterday evening roosting on the island.

10 March 2016Highlight was a fly-through flock of thirteen Dunlin heading NE at 1142, also 2 Wigeon, 5 Gadwall, 6 Tufteds, 5 Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, a drake Goosander, 2 Oystercatchers and 16 Fieldfare.

11 March 201640 Whooper Swans were off the north bank early morning but typically had moved on by 0900. Later, first one , then two adult Kittiwakes were with Black-headed Gulls at the south end of the res. and these were  joined by a candidate second-winter Russian Common Gull and an adult Mediterranean Gull. The first Ringed Plover of the year was present early afternoon.

12 March 2016A Red Kite moved through and a Goshawk, possibly a different bird to the one seen recently, showed well. 3 Curlews came in later and an apparent Glaucous/Herring Gull hybrid was in the roost with a possible 3rdW Caspian gull. A Chiffchaff singing behind the main car park could have been the same bird seen in Alders Wood a couple of weeks back rather than an arriving migrant.

3 April 2016A Sandwich Tern was present 0745-0807 before leaving over the dam wall and a Little Egret lingered briefly at around the same time. Both were new for the year with the Sandwich Tern being the first since 15 June 2014. Also single Mute Swan and Pink-footed Goose, 4 Goldeneye, 6 Oystercatchers, 3 Curlews, Little Ringed Plover through and yesterday's Green Woodpecker seen well in flight across the west car park and onto the east bank.

4 April 2016Highlight was a Scandinavian Rock Pipit that flew in and landed on the island in front of the Member's Hide at 0910 and showed well until it suddenly took flight and flew across towards the east bank at 0940. Also single Mute Swan and Pink-footed Goose, 5 Mandarins, 4 Gadwall, 9 Teal, 5 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, single Little Ringed Plover, 11 Buzzards in one scan, 2 Sparrowhawks, c50 each of Swallows and Sand Martins with a few House Martins.

5 April 2016Pink-footed Goose, 12 Teal, 7 Gadwall, drake Mandarin, 5 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, several Common Snipe, a Peregrine, a Raven, Green Woodpecker, 4 singing Goldcrests in the Sailing Club/Alders Wood area, 16 Chiffchaffs and 5 Willow Warblers between the west and south car parks; the latter being the first recorded this year, a few days later than normal. Highlight was a Jack Snipe that showed well late evening, this bird also being seen on Sunday afternoon (3rd).

Also 2 Mute Swans, Pink-footed Goose (paired with a Greylag), 5 Gadwall, 4 Goldeneye, 11 C.Buzzards, 2 Sparrowhawks, 4 Oystercatchers plus 17 Chiffchaffs, 5 Willow Warblers and a single Blackcap counted between the west and south car parks.

9 April 2016For the second day running a Red Kite flew through, across the east bank and north at 1405-15. Also 2 Mute Swans, 7 Gadwall, c10 Teal, Goldeneye, 10+ C.Buzzards, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 C.Snipe, a Kingfisher, a Fieldfare heading NE, several Willow Warblers, two Blackcaps and a Brambling lingering on the feeders. The Jack Snipe showed well again this evening and hirundine numbers were high with c250 Sand Martins, c100 Swallows and c30 House Martins.

11 April 20162 Mute Swans, Pink-footed Goose, 10 Gadwall, 20 Teal, 1 Mandarin, 3 Goldeneye, 19 Tufteds, 4 Oystercatchers, Little Ringed Plover thru' NW, first Common Sandpiper of the year, 2 Common Snipe, Green Woodpecker, 2 White Wagtails and a Kingfisher. Of interest the Jack Snipe was seen again last night (10th).

12 April 2016Best day of the year so far; a female Hen Harrier flew through north-west 1115-20, only the eighth Ogston record and the second in spring mirroring the last which also flew north-west on 7 May 2011. Shortly after at 1130 six Arctic Terns arrived and were joined at 1205 by a beautiful adult summer Little Gull, these remaining until 1245. Supporting cast included 2 Mute Swans, Pink-footed Goose, drake Shoveler, 18 Teal, 8 Gadwall, 4 drake Mandarins, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, 5 C.Snipe, Jack Snipe showing well again, Dunlin in at 1700, 2 Common Sandpipers, 7+ Willow Warblers and a White Wagtail.
