Although the descent of the value of historical research of the bible and the documentary hypothesis, many academic institutions still refusing to adopt new ways of biblical research. 3/17/2020 17:20:50Susan Marx and Sagit Morsagit.mor@beitberl.ac.ilA session seeking one or more additional individualsIn this session we wish to look at the Beit Midrash as an institution from new and different perspectives:
Professor Susan Marks considers the Beit Midrash of the Palestinian Amoraim. By focusing on the concrete evidence for how the rabbis funded the Beit Midrash she comes to offer new models for how to think of these study circles.
Dr. Sagit Mor will offer an analysis of the group dynamic processes that occurred there, as they emerge in the stories of the Beit Midrash in the Babylonian Talmud, in light of concepts and theories from the field of Organizational Analysis.
To complete the panel, we are inviting another one or two researcher(s) who work on various issues related to the Beit Midrash. Your paper can engage any relevant perspective: topics related to the nature of the Beit Midrash in Eretz Israel or the Babylonian Yeshiva; affiliations and connections between the various institutions; roles in the Beit Midrash; Institutional processes and change; the Beit Midrash in light of surrounding cultures (in Israel and Babylon); etc.

You can contact Sagit at email sagit.mor@beitberl.ac.il and Susan by email smarks@ncf.edu.

3/19/2020 0:47:12Igor H De Souzaigor.h.desouza@yale.eduAn individual seeking other individuals to create a session or seeking a sessionThis paper contrasts the Jewish concept of 'mishkav zakhur' ('lying with a male', Lev.18) to the Christian concept of 'sodomy' and the Islamic concept of 'liwat'. The paper argues that the concept of mishkav zakhur is not merely a Jewish equivalent or translation of those two concepts. Rather, mishkav zakhur reflects a distinct understanding of same-sex practices and the individuals who practice them. The historical focus of the paper is the rabbinical and medieval periods. The textual foci are talmudic texts and medieval philosophical/legal sources.Gender and Sexuality Studies, Interdisciplinary, Theoretical, and New Approaches, Medieval and Early Modern Jewish History, Literature, and Culture
