Methodological notes

We only gathered data on operations that aim at preventing refugees and migrants from coming or staying in Europe. Asylum and cooperation programs, for instance, are not taken into account.

We only considered projects that were finished, for which money was disbursed (the only exception to this are the NCCs, for which only budget data was avaible). Research projects from Horizon2020, the Smart Border package are not taken into account.

We only considered amounts for which we had an official source or document. We did not receive confirmation from SELEX, an italian arms manufacturer, that a €400m project to enhance the Libyan borders was paid for, for instance.

Due to our limited resources, we were only able to look into few of the total expenses imposed on European taxpayers by the border-control-industry complex. Much more needs to be found.
