To be admitted to the Master of Forestry program, students must have completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution. An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is expected. Students with a lower GPA can be admitted if a faculty member makes the recommendation. Up to 6 credits of senior level courses can be transferred for credit to the MF program. Students from the University of Maine can request 9 transfer credits if the master’s degree can be completed within 18 months, also known as the “4+1” program.
The Master of Forestry (MF) has two sets of requirements. The University of Maine Graduate School requires 30 credits for a masters degree, with at least 12 credit hours at the 500 level. All MF students must also complete at least 3 credits for SFR 690 Master of Forestry Project. All MF graduates are also required to meet SAF accreditation standards as indicated below. Prerequisites can be met with similar course content from previous institutions, taken at UMaine, or fulfilled through a portfolio. Additional courses may be waived based on work experience. Students without any prior education in forestry or a related sciences major may need to take prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, and math prior to beginning the MF program. If students complete a Khan Academy course in a prerequisite topic, that is accepted as demonstrating competency in the topic such that required courses for the MF can be taken.
