I replied to an email advertising it. Global health work isn't for everyone - the DR was hot and I didn't always have electricity or running water. I grew up there so I'm used to it, but I know others who have gone and struggled.

Cgh requires the experience to be a minimum of 4 weeks I believe and you have to have your application in by 6 weeks before you leave. But it’s otherwise pretty casual and nothing to stress about

Research in PhiladelphiaNoCHOP Lab: Ortiz-Gonzalez
Our lab focuses in translational neuroscience. We believe there is much neurobiology to learn from patients with rare genetic disorders that disrupt normal neurodevelopment. We are particularly interested on whether mitochondrial dysfunction can be a common underlying mechanism in rare pediatric neurodegenerative disorders. Currently there are limited treatments for genetic disorders, so our goal is to develop better disease models and tools to screen for novel therapeutic interventions

I got information about the opportunity through CGH's email blasts, and transportation for the trip (up to $1000) was funded through the office as well. The opportunity was 6 weeks long. The deadline was late spring, and I didn't find out if I got the position until mid-April.

4 week program for high school juniors and seniors interested in medicine. . You get paid well for the amount of time you put in and you still have plenty of time to travel! You lead a small group and teach them about history/physical/clinical decision making/basics of diseases, you get to go to the Mutter and Science museums, help them with hands on skills like blood draw, intubation, laparoscopic skills etc.

Tip from an upperclassman: Look into PIs who have published a lot of papers recently (within the last year, search them on PubMed for this with a time filter). That lets you know they likely have a lot of upcoming papers you can jump in on in a short summer.
