Suwannee Canal Recreation Area is a federal facility located deep in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Known as the eastern access to the 396,000-acre wildlife refuge, it is the site of the visitors center. This site provides the best road access to the open water prairies of the Okefenokee. Other habitats surrounding the Area include shrub-scrub forest and cypress domes.
