2023 Ode to Bluegrass in West Creek4/15/2023West Creek760
We have an Ode to Bluegrass with a full day of great bands in West Creek on Saturday, April 15th!
1:00-2:00pm – Garden Variety String Band: Garden Variety String Band is a bluegrass band based out of Richmond, VA. Inspired by old time, folk, and bluegrass music.
2:15-3:15pm – Josh Grigsby & County Line: Recognized as one of Virginia’s fast rising bluegrass bands, Josh Grigsby and County Line was awarded the 2015 Bluegrass Band of Virginia Championship by the Virginia Folk Music Association
3:30-4:30pm – Justin Golden: “…A classic throwback blues tinge to his voice that is undeniable and smooth like butter..”
4:45-6:00pm – Furnace Mountain: The band creates music that is at times lively and raucous, with spirited fiddle melodies weaving in and around the powerful rhythms of the bass and bouzouki, and other times poignant and poetic, with sublime vocal harmonies beautifully interpreting some of the oldest songs ever written.
6:15-7:30pm –Ouros: This bilingual band performs songs in both Spanish and English with rich vocal harmonies and sizzling instrumentation. Inspired by multiple genres including flamenco, bluegrass, jazz, Latin, and traditional American and European music.
7:45-9:00pm – The Dirty Grass Players: This Baltimore-based quartet has one toe-tappin’ foot in traditional bluegrass while pushing boundaries with their blazing harmonies and musicianship.
Kick off spring with fun music, Peach Tripel release, and food trucks on the patio. This event is free and fun for all ages. See you there!

Anthony Pirog and Joel Harrison CD Release Concert4/17/2023
Old Cabell Hall • Charlottesville, VA
540
About this event2 hoursMobile eTicketThe UVA Department of Music presents Joel Harrison and Anthony Pirog Quartet, celebrating the release of The Great Mirage (AGS Recordings), on Monday, April 17th 2023 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. This free concert is made possible by a generous donation by the Gassmann Fund for Innovation in Music.
The performance features guitarists Joel Harrision, Anthony Pirog, bassist Matt Pavolka and Mike Kuhl on drums.
Guitarists Anthony Pirog and Joel Harrison tend to finish each others' sentences when they play. Twenty five years separate them in age, and yet they seem to have common ancestry. Both are from Wash. D.C., both love jazz, rock, fusion, avant garde, folk, funk, and country music, and both often do all of it all at once. A previous encounter took place in the now defunct 3 guitar group The Spellcasters (Cuneiform Records/ 2018.) Now the two plectrists have conjured a true collaboration.
On The Great Mirage each composed and arranged music for the session, the music caterwauls between heavy and light, really loud and really soft, gorgeous, spiky, grooving and free. The record is a bit of a 21st century essay in what the guitar can do. The band’s sense of joy and adventure is palpable as they extend their range and reach deep into American guitar history and future.
Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda. (map) Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall. For more details and the most updated event information, please visit https://music.virginia.edu/anthony-pirog-and-joel-harrison-cd-release-concert.
All programs are subject to change. For more information please call the Department of Music at 434.924.3052 or write music@virginia.edu
The University of Virginia Department of Music thanks Michael Gassmann and Cynthia Lewis for creating the Gassmann Fund which invites innovative artists who perform or incorporate into their music experimental rock, free improvisation, world, and computer music; arrange residencies to create opportunities for faculty and students to work closely with innovative artists; support innovative and experimental programs and projects for faculty and students who are pushing musical boundaries; and organize trips for UVA students to collaborate with musicians and present original work outside of Charlottesville.

Arkansauce3/29/2023540
Arkansauce is a genre-hopping, four piece string band from northwest Arkansas, bending the rules and blurring the lines between bluegrass, newgrass, folk, americana, country, blues, and funk. With a loyal following growing every day in the Natural State and along their tour routes, the band is proud to be stepping into a hard-driving sound unique to the Arkansas quartet.

The hard-working musicians are filling the calendar with upcoming appearances at premiere music festivals and venues in and around Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, New Mexico, and Missouri.

The band’s roots go back to 2011 when founding members Ethan Bush, Zac Archuleta, and Stephen Jolly began writing together a er becoming acquainted through mutual connections in the close-knit Fayetteville music scene. A er a couple of years building a repertoire of original music and releasing their first album (Hambone) as a trio, they were joined by Tom Andersen on the upright bass and Adams Collins on the five-string banjo. The road-tested chops Andersen and Collins brought to the table helped to cultivate the mature, well-rounded sound needed to accommodate their sophomore release “All Day Long.”

An Arkansauce show is riddled with improvisational guitar, banjo, and mandolin leads, paired with powerful harmonies and heart-felt songwriting, all held together by deep foot-stompin' bass grooves. There’s an undeniably intimate connection between the band and their fans that's contagious and leaves everyone in front of, and on the stage wanting more. Arkansauce holds their head high, as they look forward to enjoying everything life and music has in store for them and their fans.

Winners of the 2021 MerleFest Band Competition, Into The Fog is a genre-jumping string band based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. With its members having various backgrounds ranging from bluegrass, country, rock, to funk, Into The Fog creates a musical melting pot of sounds in an acoustic/newgrass setting. The band is made up of Brian Stephenson(Acoustic guitar, Vocals), Winston Mitchell(Mandolin, Vocals), Derek Lane(Bass, Vocals) and Connor Kozlosky (Electric guitar, Vocals).

Originally formed in Wilmington, NC, Into The Fog immediately hit the ground running as a band by heading across the country to compete at the 2018 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition only a few months after coming together. That cross country trip was recorded by friend of the band and videographer Mason Godwin in his documentary Band #7:The Ride to Telluride.

After the Telluride trip, the band got to work playing as much as they could around North Carolina. Becoming a mainstay at over 30 different breweries around the state Into The Fog started to quickly make a name for themselves. Then in November of 2018 the band went to a cabin outside of Waynesville, NC and spent a week recording their debut album Wishin’ It Would Rain, which was released on February 22, 2019.

“The trio crafts a dynamic mix of songs and sounds, from the gypsy feel of “Caawphonation” to the running-from-Johnny-Law feel of instrumental “Cedar Island Rendezvous.”- Brian Tucker(Star News)

With their debut album under their belt Into The Fog started to pick up momentum exchanging brewery gigs for music venues and festivals with opportunities like playing Shakori Hills, Rooster Walk, FloydFest, MerleFest, NC Homegrown Music Festival, IBMA, and Front Porch Fest along with opening slots for national touring acts Sam Bush, Ghost of Paul Revere, Jon Stickley Trio, Keller & The Keels and Town Mountain. Into The Fog solidified their sound further with their 14 track sophomore album Runnin’ Blind and Chasin’ Time which was released in May of 2021.

“While purists might label label their sound as Newgrass, those in attendance respond to the gospel they are preaching and seem perfectly content with the foggy genre, since the sound is so clear”- Donna Davis(The Daily Reflector)

Program:Antonin Dvo≈ô√°k - Suite in A Major "American" Op. 98bEdvard Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, with soloist Keenan ReesorJosef Suk - Scherzo Fantastique Op. 25This is a concert of music for and from the heart. Dvo≈ô√°k's suite is a love song to the America in which it was composed, but it is richly infused with the folk music of his beloved Bohemian homeland. Grieg's concerto begins with a famous and rousing declaration of passion but moves through heart-melting tenderness to a finale of pure joy. Finally, Joseph Suk encourages us to celebrate love, but not to take any of it too seriously.

Augustana: Everyday An Eternity Tour5/2/2023540
Augustana is back with new music, and through its formation, its creator Dan Layus has stepped into a new musical universe.

While the artist is well-known for its anthemic indie-rock leaning hits like "Boston," "Sweet and Low" and "Steal Your Heart," Augustana's consistent march of new and ever-evolving material has embodied a refusal to settle artistically. Never has that been more clearly evident than with the artist's latest studio album, "Everyday an Eternity: Solo Piano Works," a genre-shaking full-length record that redefines what can be expected from this artist.

Composing and performing a series of piano pieces that can easily live in the contemporary classical world, Dan Layus confidently chooses to leave his singing voice aside for the project and instead finds his lyricism echoing through the hammers and strings of the piano. The album' finds the composer's unique melodic and structural stylings effortlessly blending between the classical, the romantic and the modern. Along the way, the unfamiliar terrain for the artist seems to become more familiar with each note, each modulation, each variation, as he makes his way out to the edge of musical expression and safely back home again.

Austin Meade4/5/2023540
AUSTIN MEADE

On Black Sheep, Austin Meade delivers songs and stories that, like the young singer/guitarist himself, are contradictory yet cohesive. His influences—musical and otherwise—are as varied and rich as the small-town Texas soil that nurtured his talent, yielding 12 stellar songs ranging from the insinuating multi-layered musicality and storytelling of “Déjà Vu” to the dark alt-pop of “Happier Alone,” and on further to the new-age, Sabbath-inspired “Dopamine Drop.”

Thanks to his metal- and classic-rock loving dad, Meade got to see bands like Judas Priest and worshipped Whitesnake. In junior high he related to the intense emo-rock of Paramore and Fall Out Boy, and the power of songwriters like John Mayer. Yet, thanks to plainspoken but deep heartland songwriters like Tom Petty, and cutting his teeth touring in the Texas and Oklahoma Red Dirt scene, Meade’s music overflows with wide-open soulfulness. He was a drummer for years, even teaching to pay the bills, but Meade found his true voice when he began playing guitar as a teen in his pastor-father’s church. Those experiences lend both a gravitas and rebelliousness to Meade’s songs and self.

The songs on Black Sheep, produced by Taylor Kimball (Koe Wetzel, Read Southall, Kody West) are instantly memorable, but far from simplistic. Meade challenges the status quo, both musically and lyrically. “I like to question those standard math formulas,” he explains. “What if we just add two more lines and make somebody feel uncomfortable here,’ because the song itself is about being uncomfortable?” And within a song—and video—like “Déjà Vu,” Meade explores the cyclical, Groundhog Day-like nature of a month—or lifetime—of Sundays.

Throughout school, “I was one of the weird kids who actually liked writing class. I would describe ridiculous stuff, and in elementary school I was a Harry Potter nerd. I’d get lost in those books,” he remembers. Soon, though, records became his new sanctuary. “I started to hear songwriters that were telling stories in three to five minutes; concepts and ideas that were not only spanning just that one song. One of my favorite lyricists is Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys; the way he describes things, you can almost touch it or smell it.”

Likewise, on Black Sheep, Meade’s vivid descriptions are palpable and immersive. They paint a picture the listener can step into, like taking a journey through “two-lane highways and speed-trap towns” that Meade traverses in “Déjà Vu.” “That’s my goal,” he explains. “To make people feel like they're in the room with the stories in my songs; they're within that experience.”

Meade’s carefully crafted songs manage to be profound and provocative, sonically suited for both dive bars and arenas. From the seismic guitars and painfully honest lyrics of a song like “Dopamine Drop” to the mournful, lilting nostalgia and hard reality of  “Settle Down” and on through the fantasy of “handwritten letters, candle-wax seal, Midwest American feel” in “Cave In,” it is clear Meade’s ambitions and dreams are weighty.

The songs are ably aided on Black Sheep by his band, longtime guitarist and creative partner David Willie and drummer Aaron Hernandez; newest member bassist Jordan Pena isn’t on Black Sheep. In recording the LP with producer Kimball, Austin committed to exploring and experimenting with new ideas. “I wanted to put more pedals and crazier sounds on Black Sheep... I want to be constantly changing and morphing as an artist,” Meade says, “making sure that I'm opening myself up to new opportunities and new tones.”

The closing song that gives the album its title is self-referential and accepting. “‘Black Sheep’ is me realizing that, ‘fuck it, I don't have to change what I'm doing, I don't need to feel like I have to fit in.’ Just because I'm playing in Texas and Oklahoma doesn’t mean I have to play more country, or only an acoustic guitar. I own who and what I am.”

Further expounding on the record Meade notes, “I like to break people's hearts at the last minute, sometimes unsuspectingly: ‘Comfort is a hard drug.’” While not immune to the appeal of a white-picket-fence future, he wants more… for himself, and others. “I want people to look at lyrics like that and figure out if it challenges them to move or challenges them to make themselves a better person. To do what they want to do with their life and achieve their dreams, rather than just letting everybody else tell them what life is ‘supposed to be.’”

To that end, he’s been following his muse and paying dues for most of his young years. Playing every dimly lit restaurant stage that would help pay bills in college. (At Texas A&M he studied for agricultural economics, which he terms “a business degree, just a little bit more Texan.”) Meade’s also spent the last six years honing his songwriting skills on two indie EPs and two albums prior to making Black Sheep. And his talent has not gone unnoticed, the Dallas Observer writing that Meade’s “rich guitar-driven melodies and tone call back to times when Tom Petty and Jimmy Page ruled the stage. … His songwriting prowess is beyond his 26 years, with lyrics and characters acting as conduits into the mind of a young man trying to sort out his feelings as the state of the world smacks him in the face.”

Black Sheep was written and recorded in late 2019, and meant to be released independently--until Snakefarm got a hold of it and immediately signed Meade. The frontman is well aware that the hard work that’s led to this point is just the beginning. After all, he lays it out in “Black Sheep”: “Comfort is a hard drug … do you ever want to leave this town?” For Meade, placid hometown comfort is in the rear-view—or will be once touring starts up again, as he boldly sings his statement of intent: “I am the black sheep / running til I’m six feet.”

Banjo Workshop with Tony Trischka4/22/2023

About the Event

Join world-renowned Banjo player & educator Tony Trischka, for an exciting workshop at The Front Porch. This workshop will be a deep dive into the playing of Earl Scruggs. Tony will be sharing a small sampling of previously un-heard tunes from jam sessions that Earl did with John Hartford in the late 1990s. Earlish tidibits will be covered, like his focus on syncopation, and playing the melody exactly. Tablature will be provided and attendees are welcome to to audio or video recording. This workshop is geared towards intermediate/advanced students, but beginners are welcome to join. You must bring your own banjo, and a notebook.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Tony Trischka, known as “the father of modern bluegrass”, was born in Syracuse, N.Y, and raised in a home filled with music. There were Broadway scores and a sweeping range of classical music, from Stravinsky to Beethoven. (The first thing Trischka learned to play on the banjo, in fact, was the Ninth Symphony.) The wide- open American vistas of Aaron Copland had an especially potent spiritual and visceral impact on him, as did the folk music his left-leaning father held dear. The Almanac Singers, the solo work of its founding members Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and Lead Belly’s children’s LP were in constant rotation. Trischka fell in love with the banjo by way of the Kingston Trio’s 1963 recording of “M.T.A.,” and was able to experience the New York-centered folk revival by trekking to the Newport Folk Festival in the early to mid-’60s. He moved to the city in the early ’70s and hit the ground running, settling in among a peer group of extraordinary musicians who saw American roots music as a thriving, living language that could be expanded and combined with other influences and sensibilities. Alongside other young masters like mandolinist Andy Statman and fiddler Kenny Kosek, in such units as Country Cooking and Breakfast Special, Trischka found his purpose. Jaw-dropping musicianship was certainly encouraged, as was comic and literary irreverence, earnest songwriting and a record shop’s worth of touchstones beyond bluegrass, from the avant-garde to fusion and R&B.
That’s essentially the m.o. that defines Trischka’s landmark solo debut, Bluegrass Light, released on the Rounder label in 1974. “For the first album,” Trischka recalls, “I was just doing what I loved, music I was hearing.” That’s a characteristically understated way to describe his synthesis of a vast swath of the 20th century’s most interesting sounds: bluegrass staples, Van Dyke Parks’ orchestral psychedelic pop, Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, the heyday jazz-rock fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Weather Report and Zappa, and more. Many other milestone albums followed, among them 1983’s A Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas, which refined the eclecticism of Bluegrass Light and featured such West Coast newgrass royalty as violinist Darol Anger, guitarist Tony Rice and mandolinist David Grisman.
