Human subjects/ ethics issues:
31
Please ensure that data added to this spreadsheet complies with the usual IRB/Ethics description of observation of people in public places. The Canadian TCPS2 considers a study exempt from review if it meets the following three criteria (Article 2.3)
32
Useful race/ethnicity categories:
link to TCPS2 guidelines
33
hispanic(a) it does not involve any intervention staged by the researcher, or direct interaction with individuals or groups
34
black/african american
35
asian/pacific islander
36
native american
(b) individuals or groups targeted for observation have no reasonable expectation of privacy
37
international
38
39
(c) any dissemination of results does not allow identification of specific individuals
40
41
42
We're good on (b), but shaky on (a) since people contributing to the spreadsheet probably will participate in question periods themselves too. Just make sure your participation is normal-ish and don't try to run an actual controlled experiment of any kind.
43
44
As for (c), please don't write down any names of question askers, and if there's just one or two members of a minority at a conference (black, gender nonbinary, etc) maybe talk to them before you specify that minority in the spreadsheet.
