1		Welcome to 6th Grade Science - The Course Guide

3	Purpose: To provide a course aligned with the Utah Core for 6th grade science that is easily accesible for parents and students and that is enjoyable for all involved

5	Why 6th grade?: In 2017, Utah adopted a new science core for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The curriculum options that AOS currently offers have not yet aligned to the new core. So we set out to write our very own AOS 6th grade science course that is aligned with the Core.

7	Materials: Most of the materials will be provided to you from Alpine Online. They will come in the form of online reading, hands-on activities at home and monthly live labs. At the beginning of the course, you will be provided with the small list of materials that will come from home. The entire materials list should be things already available within your home.

9	Time Frame: It is expected that each lesson take between 30 and 60 minutes (depending on the activity). It is expected that your child will work in science for 2-3 days a week. There are 7 units for the whole year.

11	Is this a required course?: All new 6th grade students enrolling in a science course for the 2019-2020 school year will take this course. Returning families will be given the option for their science course. It is highly encouraged that all 6th graders take this science course as it is completely aligned with the Utah State Core and truly teaches the needed skills to be student scientists through high school.
