Josh Kun and Geovanni Zamudio aka IOB (Intrepida Orquesta de Beats) will join us in the cog•nate cruiser to speak about music that has delineated and blurred the US/Mexico border and shaped the Tijuana / Los Angeles soundscape.
Each conversation will take place inside of our cog•nate cruiser, a radio-station-wagon, as we wait in line to cross the border. The ensuing dialogue will be live-broadcast over hyper-local pirate radio at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on 87.9 FM.

Friday August 12th8:00pm - 12pm Escalas Fronterizas: Border Sites + Sights + CitiesPOLEN [ Adriana Trujillo + Jose Inerzia]TBD Escalas Fronterizas: Border Sites + Sights + Cities
Curated by Cog•nate Collective / Pablo Martinez Zarate + Isabel Gil Gomez + Juan Alberto Apodaca / POLEN [Adriana Trujillo + José Inerzia]

Escalas Fronterizas invites vendors and the thousand waiting to go across to reflect on the meaning, function and evolution of borders like the one that divide cities such as Tijuana / San Diego and the USA / Mexico nations though cinematic representations in visual arts and in pop culture.
The series of projections that will take place at the border represent diverse perspectives contemplating the border as a site (Border Sites) -- geopolitical + local ecologies -- the border as a visual environment (Border Sight) -- visual culture + popular representation -- and the border as a series of narrative cites (Border Cites) -- local/regional history.
The intervention explores this theme moving between the macro- and macro- scales, abandoning both the abstract dimensions of the border as well as the palpable experience at sights like the San Ysidro port of entry.

Satuday August 13th3:00PM - 6:00PMAMBOS Open StudiosRelaciones Inesperadas Moises Hortaliminal(mente)
The experience of crossing the border is the epitome of the liminal experience, in which a sector of the population of México and the USA experience a ritual in which its notions and customs are in redefinition during that period of transit. The are uncountable amount of anecdotes in which there is a description of a switch in morals and social behaviors when a person crosses to “the other side” due to the socioeconomics and policies of each Nation-State. By highlighting these differences, liminal(mente) proposes to catalyze new possibilities of thinking stemming from a sonic disruption to a common situation as is the border crossing.

liminal(mente) is a piece and performance divided in two moments: The first component is a capture of the soundscape of the San Ysidro Border Crossing in the Tijuana-San Diego region through strategic field recordings. Later, a brain-computer interface (EEG) will be used during the ritual of border crossing to create a generative composition made up of said recordings with the objective of posing the question: ¿What is the internal sound (the individual) and the external sound (collective) in waiting between the sociocultural contexts of Mexico and the United States? The result of this performance will be recorded and later transmitted through the temporary pirata radio station of Cognate collective.

20-26 of August
(will be displayed on billboard during August 25-26th)

As the largest border crossing in the world, the US/Mexico border can be seen by some as the perimeter of Latin America. The edge of Mexico, Central and South America. The point at which 300,000 of our identities and histories are checked everyday. Quipu Fronterizo expands on this notion, and uses the Andean Pre-Columbian organizational system, or “quipu”, as a framework to record our daily migrations to the north. In the Quipu Fronterizo project, US/Mexico border commuters on the Mexican side of the San Ysidro Border Crossing will each be given two strands of thread and asked to anonymously tie them into a knot. The strands represent the US and Mexico’s relationship to one another, our two selves at either sides of the border, and our own mental state at the point of crossing. Each knot will be collected from commuters and tied to other knots made that same day. The cumulative series of daily bundled knots will then be organized into a large-scale quipu and displayed on a billboard above the AMBOS market space hub. The Quipu Fronterizo seeks to materialize our connection to one another as a community and make our presence and experiences visible to bi-national audiences.

Friday Aug 267:00 PMBorder ExperienceIngrid HernandezBorder experience is a project about context and participation based on collecting images produced at the waiting area at the international border between Mexico (Tijuana) and the United States (San Ysidro) also known as La Línea or “The line.”
The production process for this piece will begin with a public invitation to share images. This will be done by placing a printed ad across a person’s chest and having them walk around and between the lanes of waiting cars (see image of car insurance salesman) during this time an open call will be made for proposals. The public call will last 15 days and the book editing will start once it closes and will then be printed. The last stage of the project is the distribution of free copies in the Port of Entry using the same method employed for the call.
