The program for our annual meeting, “BBRC 4,” is now set. The all-star lineup so far will include: Ron Hansen, 1960 AL Rookie of the Year with the Orioles who later pulled off an unassisted triple play; he played 15 seasons in the majors from 1958-72; Larry Haney, former Orioles catcher who won a World Series with the Oakland A's in 1974; Jane Leavy will discuss her new biography of Babe Ruth, The Big Fella; F.X. Flinn, 15-year national treasurer of SABR; Cappy Gagnon, past president of SABR and former professional bodyguard to the stars; Charlie Vascellaro, chapter member, will discuss baseball in the U.S. Japanese internment camps during World War II; John Burbridge, chapter member, will recount an occasion in Baltimore that affected baseball in a nationally public way; Warren Grill, former chef to the Washington Nationals, will recount his time in that position; Ken Mars and Dave Stinson will present their current research. Dave Stinson will be the Master of Ceremonies. Lunch is covered by your registration fee and this year is catered by Mission Barbecue. Because of an unusually generous donation we have significant Oriole memorabilia and more for the benefit of our annual raffle. Winning raffle ticket numbers will be posted during the meeting. We will be meeting on the fourth floor of the Terrace Club restaurant at Progressive Field on Saturday, February 2. Due to construction going on at Progressive Field we will not have the use of the players’ lot for parking so we will all be on our own. There is a Cavs’ game that night but it should not impact us. I will have a detailed agenda out next week but our featured speakers will be: 1) Kevin Tenenbaum, Indians’ Assistant Director for Baseball Research and Development; 2) Sheldon Ocker, 2018 winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame. We will also have talks from John Adams (yes that John Adams), Professor Jim Albert of Bowling Green State University talking about the MLB study on the recent home run explosion and possible differences in baseball construction, and our very own Stephanie Liscio talking on her PhD dissertation ““If You Build It, Where Will They Go?” Sports Stadiums, Civic Pride, And Neighborhood Displacement, 1930-1970” The meeting will be free and open to all so feel free to invite anyone you think who would have an interest in attending.

For this year’s SABR Day, the Rocky Mountain Chapter is presenting a Media Panel that will include Thomas Harding, current writer for MLB.com (since 2002) and Colorado Rockies (since 2000), and Patrick Saunders, current Rockies reporter for the Denver Post and former President of the Baseball Writers Association of America. We are currently working on including other panel members too. The panel discussion is to be moderated by Taylor McGregor, current Rockies broadcaster and report for AT&T Sportsnet. We'll also have new SABR CEO Scott Bush speaking to us. Lunch will be served a-la carte starting at 11:30 a.m., with the media panel discussion to begin at 1:30 p.m. We will then conclude our festivities with our traditional “Mass Game of Catch” after the media panel discussion (REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER!) This Saturday's SABR Day meeting will include John McFarland, Donelson branch librarian, who will discuss score keeping. John will be leading a seminar on the subject in March and April and he is excited to be able to discuss this hidden art with us. We will be joined by John and Charlie Mitchell, brothers who pitched in the majors. Both are from Nashville and were drafted by the Boston Red Sox, John in 1983 and Charlie in 1982. John played for the New York Mets (1986-89) and Orioles (1990), and Charlie for the Red Sox (1984-85). They are willing to share their stories of family and baseball, and John has a story of tragedy and survival. With the recent announcement of Nashville's potential in becoming an MLB city, there is plenty of room for discussion, and feel free to bring your favorite baseball book or memorabilia item to tell us about, too! We will have lunch at nearby McNamara's Irish Pub after the meeting. ... That night at 6:30 pm is also Lipscomb University's "First Pitch" dinner and features former major leaguer Fred McGriff.
