The Banks-Bragan Chapter will celebrate SABR Day on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Globe Life Park in conjunction with the Texas Rangers FanFest from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We will have a table staffed by our members to promote SABR membership. Hope to see you there!

We are happy to announce an all-star lineup for SABR Day 2019 in Atlanta. SABR Day is a time when the entire chapter can get together, talk about baseball past and present, and in general catch-up with each other. Here is the lineup of those scheduled to speak: Russell Carleton, "The Next Evolution of Baseball Thinking"; Wayland Moore, "Designing the 1974 Braves uniform"; J.P. Caillault, "The Triple Crown Score"; Terry Sloope, "Crackers, Chicks & Crybabies". This should be a great day to talk baseball. We hope that you can join us. The Embry Hills Library is located just outside the perimeter on the east side, about 2 minutes off I-285 at the Chamblee-Tucker Road exit.

Our meeting will feature a conversation with Rob Neyer. Rob is a pioneer in baseball analysis and writing, having worked for Bill James and STATS Inc. before spending 15 years as a columnist at ESPN. Since then he's worked at SB Nation, FOX Sports, and other outlets. He is currently the commissioner of the West Coast League. He will join us via Skype and will be interviewed by Gilbert Martinez.

The program for our annual meeting, “BBRC 4,” is now set. The all-star lineup so far will include: Ron Hansen, 1960 AL Rookie of the Year with the Orioles who later pulled off an unassisted triple play; he played 15 seasons in the majors from 1958-72; Larry Haney, former Orioles catcher who won a World Series with the Oakland A's in 1974; Jane Leavy will discuss her new biography of Babe Ruth, The Big Fella; F.X. Flinn, 15-year national treasurer of SABR; Cappy Gagnon, past president of SABR and former professional bodyguard to the stars; Charlie Vascellaro, chapter member, will discuss baseball in the U.S. Japanese internment camps during World War II; John Burbridge, chapter member, will recount an occasion in Baltimore that affected baseball in a nationally public way; Warren Grill, former chef to the Washington Nationals, will recount his time in that position; Ken Mars and Dave Stinson will present their current research. Dave Stinson will be the Master of Ceremonies. Lunch is covered by your registration fee and this year is catered by Mission Barbecue. Because of an unusually generous donation we have significant Oriole memorabilia and more for the benefit of our annual raffle. Winning raffle ticket numbers will be posted during the meeting. Join us for an informal gathering of baseball friends on SABR Day! One of our topics of conversation will be about Bob Harvey, a .300 hitter in the Negro Leagues who played on the 1946 Newark Eagles championship team along with future Hall of Famers Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Leon Day, and Biz Mackey. Attendance at SABR meetings is FREE and you do not have to be a member of SABR to attend. You only have to purchase your lunch. Hope to see you there!

Join us for a special meeting of the Luke Easter SABR Chapter at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019, Consumer's Pub at the Park at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York. Longtime SABR member Richard Hunt has relocated to Buffalo from Cooperstown, where he was one of the founding members of the Cliff Kachline Chapter. He'll be working on bringing more SABR programming to Buffalo and hopes to welcome any baseball fans in the area who wants to stop by and say hello.

Gardner-Waterman Vermont Chapter

Our late afternoon meeting time will serve as a pre-game for the Vermont Lake Monsters exciting gathering that evening, "The Winter Warmer." The event will feature ESPN (and Vermont's) Buster Olney, Red Sox radio man Tim Neverett, and Dodgers Player/Personnel Director Galen Carr. The Goose Goslin Chapter will be hosting their SABR Day at the Cherry Hill Public Library from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 26. Our guests will be Pat McFarlane and Michael Czahor from the Phillies Research and Development Department. This will be a discussion and panel style presentation, so come with questions! This will be a great opportunity to get some perspective on analytics and how the Phillies are using them. The program will include: Chapter member Jon Daniels, who will review his longstanding efforts to get a marker placed in Millennium Park to commemorate the site of two 19th-century professional ballparks; analyst Scott Lindholm, who will discuss the best teams in baseball history; Gary "The Professor" Schiappacsse of the Chicago Salmon (https://www.chicagosalmon.org/), who will speak about vintage baseball; a trivia faceoff between local trivia heavyweights Dave Zeman and Chris Kamka.

Our guest speakers will include: Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Paul Daugherty; Leo Bradley, author of the play "Bleachers"; Mark Bricker on 1940s Reds ace Ewell Blackwell; Richard Jones on a 19th-century Cincinnati player named Uriah "Ri" Jones; and Callie Batts Maddox with her SABR convention award-winning presentation on women’s collegiate baseball in Ohio. The Price Hill museum has a room devoted to Price Hill baseball history, primarily Knothole, Little League, American Legion, and some sponsored adult teams. Stick around after the meeting to see the collection. Parking is available in the large Kroger parking lot across the street. We will be meeting on the fourth floor of the Terrace Club restaurant at Progressive Field on Saturday, February 2. The doors will be open at 9:15 am with the meeting starting at 9:30 am and ending at 3:30 pm. We will have a 90 minute lunch on your own break around 11:30 am. Due to construction going on at Progressive Field we will not have the use of the players’ lot for parking so we will all be on our own. There is a Cavs’ game that night but it should not impact us. I will have a detailed agenda out next week but our featured speakers will be: 1) Kevin Tenenbaum, Indians’ Assistant Director for Baseball Research and Development; 2) Sheldon Ocker, 2018 winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame. We will also have talks from John Adams (yes that John Adams), Professor Jim Albert of Bowling Green State University talking about the MLB study on the recent home run explosion and possible differences in baseball construction, and our very own Stephanie Liscio talking on her PhD dissertation ““If You Build It, Where Will They Go?” Sports Stadiums, Civic Pride, And Neighborhood Displacement, 1930-1970” The meeting will be free and open to all so feel free to invite anyone you think who would have an interest in attending.

Our second Hot Stove Meeting of the offseason is scheduled for Saturday, January 26, which is SABR Day. Take note it starts at 9:30am, at the Northwest Library in Worthington at 2280 Hard Road, just north of the Sawmill Rd and I-270 intersection. Steve Leppert will give a talk on SABR's Oral History Collection. We'll also discuss the Baseball Hall of Fame voting, trade talks and rumors, and any other baseball subjects on your mind. Join us for SABR Day in Cooperstown. Our guest speakers this year are expected to include: Pete Henrici, with an update on his continuing research on Hall of Fame Inductions; John Odell, Hall of Fame curator who will give us a sneak peek of the new Shoebox Treasures baseball cards exhibit slated to open in 2019; Tom Shieber, HOF senior curator and Chadwick Award winner on Babe Ruth in the movies; Jim Gates, HOF librarian on recent library happenings; and a group discussion on the recent Hall of Fame voting results.

For this year’s SABR Day, the Rocky Mountain Chapter is presenting a Media Panel that will include Thomas Harding, current writer for MLB.com (since 2002) and Colorado Rockies (since 2000), and Patrick Saunders, current Rockies reporter for the Denver Post and former President of the Baseball Writers Association of America. We are currently working on including other panel members too. The panel discussion is to be moderated by Taylor McGregor, current Rockies broadcaster and report for AT&T Sportsnet. We'll also have new SABR CEO Scott Bush speaking to us. Lunch will be served a-la carte starting at 11:30 a.m., with the media panel discussion to begin at 1:30 p.m. We will then conclude our festivities with our traditional “Mass Game of Catch” after the media panel discussion (REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER!) Don’t forget to bring your ball cap, ball, and glove for the game of catch after “Play Ball” is announced.

Clayton Grandquist, the Ticket Manager for the Iowa Cubs, will be our special guest with an informal presentation (i.e. plenty of opportunity for questions). Special thanks to Mike Coveyou for arranging to get Clayton for our meeting. Come to the Elysian Fields Chapter's SABR Day event and hear from leading authors, historians, and baseball experts. You don’t need to be a chapter member to attend. Join us for the Pee Wee Reese Chapter's SABR Day. Our guest speakers are expected to include author Doug Wilson on Ernie Banks, Cory Ritterbusch and Glen Sparks on Pee Wee Reese, and Harry Rothgerber on the history of the SABR Louisville chapter. In addition, there will also be door prizes and a trivia contest authored by local SABR member Dr. Jack Sullivan with cash prizes going to the winner and runner-up. Hope to see you there!

Join us for SABR Day! Our guest speaker is Lane Grindle, who will be entering his fourth season as a part of the Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcast team. I'm sure Lane will have a lot of great stories to tell about not only his great career, but also a fabulous 2018 Brewers season. SABR member Patrick Steele, author of "Home of the Braves: The Battle for Baseball in Milwaukee", will be giving a presentation titled, "Baseball and the Meuse-Argonne," which will discuss baseball during the war years. We'll also have our usual open discussions when attendees can talk about whatever baseball topic they might have. J&B's is located just north of Miller Park. The next meeting of the SABR-Quebec chapter will be held on SABR Day on January 26 at Madison’s restaurant on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal. Several topics will be discussed, among others, the 50th anniversary of the Expos, the 1949 Montreal Royals season and the last Canadian Baseball History Conference held in London, Ontario in November 2018. We will also talk about the latest news in the Quebec baseball world. Hope you'll join us!

Join us for SABR Day on January 26 at the Donelson Branch Library from 10 am - 12 noon. This Saturday's SABR Day meeting will include John McFarland, Donelson branch librarian, who will discuss score keeping. John will be leading a seminar on the subject in March and April and he is excited to be able to discuss this hidden art with us. We will be joined by John and Charlie Mitchell, brothers who pitched in the majors. Both are from Nashville and were drafted by the Boston Red Sox, John in 1983 and Charlie in 1982. John played for the New York Mets (1986-89) and Orioles (1990), and Charlie for the Red Sox (1984-85). They are willing to share their stories of family and baseball, and John has a story of tragedy and survival. With the recent announcement of Nashville's potential in becoming an MLB city, there is plenty of room for discussion, and feel free to bring your favorite baseball book or memorabilia item to tell us about, too! We will have lunch at nearby McNamara's Irish Pub after the meeting. ... That night at 6:30 pm is also Lipscomb University's "First Pitch" dinner and features former major leaguer Fred McGriff. On SABR Day, the New York Chapter will commemorate two historic occasions of baseball excellence: the 1969 Word Series triumph of the NY Mets and the first Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony -- the one on June 12, although in December 1939, the BBWAA held a special election to elect Lou Gehrig as well. Art Shamsky, back by popular demand, heads the all-star lineup of stellar speakers. Joining the former Mets player will be Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Ira Berkow, the NY Daily News' Mets beat writer and columnist Kristie Ackert, and Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson who for a time worked as a NY Yankees director of media relations and publicity! The Lefty O'Doul Chapter and Dusty Baker-Sacramento Chapter will co-host a SABR Day celebration on Saturday, February 9. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. We are planning a full day of talking baseball, with a focus on the history, players, teams and coaches of the East Bay, with lunch and a chance to enjoy the great sports memorabilia that Ricky has collected through the years. Our program will feature the history of baseball in the East Bay Area, the early days, the Oaks and the Pacific Coast League, a look at the schools, teams, coaches and players in the 1950s to the '80s, then a player panel, featuring local ballplayers and local sports writer Dave Newhouse. We've invited Lou Profumo, Al Woods, Shooty Babbitt and others. Our guest speakers also include Scott Bush, our new SABR CEO, who will be with us to tell you a bit about himself and lots more about the current state of SABR and upcoming plans; Nancy Finley will also be part of our discussion about baseball in the East Bay. She'll be talking about her uncle Charlie and the early days of the Oakland A's. Rick Swaine will be giving a presentation on his experience writing "Do it for Chappie," a historical novel focusing on the 1920 Cleveland Indians and the fatal on-field death of their star shortstop, Ray Chapman. In addition to Rick's much-anticipated presentation, we'll also be discussing forthcoming Chapter activities, including a potential trip to the metro Atlanta area this coming season to take in a series of games associated with both the Braves and two of their minor league affiliates (Rome and Gwinnett County) that are located in the metro area.
