AVOID FIRE HAZARD
- Turn off main breaker and all breakers to your house. Wait for power to return to your street (watch street lights). Turn on main breaker before turning on any other breakers. Walk house, listening, watching, smelling for sign of fire. Repeat fourth step for each breaker until sure of safety. Also, cut power to your water heater - at the breaker - if you do not have water. If you have power but no water OR your power returns before water does, it becomes a fire risk.
- Ifyou have electricity but no water, turn off water heater. There are homes catching fire becasue water heaters are empy and heating and starting fires. If a fire starts, the fire department is taking a while to respond due to high demand. Could be 45min or longer for response. Help your neighbors as you can.

COMMMUNICATING WITH FAMILY—Cell service is absent in most places right now. If it does exist, it is weak. Calls are not likely to go through; text is better. —If your vehicle is equipped with OnStar, you can activate your OnStar FOR FREE right now, giving you a link to the outside world.
—Service providers have deployed transportable cell towers/internet access points throughout Western NC. They are currently in Hendersonville, Lake Junaluska, and Waynesville. More are on the way.
—Service providers have also deployed SatColts throughout Western NC. These are Satellite Cells on Light Trucks, which are mobile cell sites that connect to satellite and do not rely on commercial power supply.
—NC cell providers have enabled "disaster roaming." Ensure "roaming" is enabled under Mobile Network Settings.

Washing With Little WaterYour body: Use a dampened or slightly wet rag with a little soap to get all the important parts. Then, make the rag wetter and go back over everywhere.
Your dishes: The three tub method. Get three tubs filled with same amount of water. Try to scrape as much food off dishes beforehand. 1st tub - Do most of the scrubbing. Scrub off all residue. 2nd tub - Rinse the dishes to make sure all residue comes off. 3rd tub- final rinse
Your clothes: Fill a gallon bag with clothes needing cleaning. Add a bit of detergent and some water - do not over fill. Shake bag well - rub and mix - for 5-10min. Dump soapy water our and refill with clean water. Shake bag again and then hand clothes to air dry.

TRAVEL
58
Please do not attempt to drive or travel to Asheville. We are being asked to keep roads clear for safety, and so that emergency personnel can try to start repairs. That said, we do realize some people NEED to leave Asheville in certain circumstances, so we will update travel information here.
59
9/28: I-40 West to Knoxville is dangerous; do not attempt. I-26 North to Johnson City should be open as far as 19E exit toward Burnsville. No report of route into or out of Burnsville. I-40 East toward Old Fort closed due to landslides. No report of route into Asheville from Brevard or Hendersonville.
60
9/30 (ish) Via IG: Route to Rutherfordton is bad. You can get through Fairview up the mountain but there are landslides. Can take I-26 to Arden all the way to Greenville and Spartanburg in SC. Service in Spartanburg. Can go east to Charlotte from there.
61
9/30 from Mitchell County: most reliable way off the mountain is 3 mile > 181 > 183.
62
9/30: Had a friend leave downtown Asheville 9/29 taking 240 to 26 towards Charlotte and she made it ok. Just be aware that gas is limited along 74 even to Shelby.
63
9/30ish: If you can get to I-26, head up to Weaverville, take 25/70 out towards Hot Springs and then 208 to Greeneville, TN. Plenty of food at stores, gas is 2.5/gal.
64
9/30: Apparently I-40W towards Waynesville is clear and from there the main highway from Sylva to Franklin is clear. Attempt this at your own risk.

I-26E towards Charlotte is clear
65
9/30 For those needing to travel to Ashe: From wilkes to 163 into West Jefferson ok > Buffalo & Ben Bolen passable with caution. Roads weak and collapsing on some sides near rivers. Trees down and mudslides. > coming from 3 top passing valley home out through Todd and Meatcamp going into Boone is passable…..same as above. Big mudslide near goober peas. > you CANNOT get from railroad grade to 221. or vice versa. Too much damage. Road is gone. > Bridge on 3 top near the dam if youre trying to get to or from 88 has buckled and you cannot pass through this way. Did not travel 88 or into Lansing have only heard
Lansing is doable but really rough.
66
10/1 via NCDOT employee: Crews have reopened I-40 East at the location of the slide near Old Fort and we have updated alert messaging to tell people evacuating Asheville area they can use I-40 East or 1-26 East. I-40 is impassable in multiple locations, and it will take some time for repairs. I-26 is closed on TN side of state line. DriveNC.gov has been updated to reflect closure of I-40 West at I-77 in Statesville.
67
10/1: I-40 East has re-opened out of Asheville, NC. People tyring to head East to get supplies, Hickory and Towns out East have water, gas, food and other supplies
68
10/7: You cannot get from NC to TN via I-40 or I-26. People evactuating the Asheville area can use I-40 or I-26 East
