This spreadsheet calculates the difference between Gapminder - GDP per Capita V27 and the previous version of GDP per Capita (V26).
6
7
In some cases, the new estimates and forecasts improved a lot from the previous releases. This means that many countries moved their position in our chart when we updated the data.
8
9
This spreadsheet was created for the purpose of checking for the biggest differences between these two versions to see how the GDP per capita estimates have changed based on different sources.
10
11
One of the reasons for such differences is that the two versions use different units. In the previous version of GM- GDP per capita, the series were expressed in PPP 2011 (constant US dollars) while in the current version, the series are expressed in PPP 2017 (US Dollars) .
12
13
Another reason is that the historical series by the Maddison Project Database (MPD ) has changed its methodology. Its 2020 version has to some extent gone back to the original Maddison approach. For detailed methodology see here.
14
15
Also, there is a large discrepancy in estimates from sources (GM, MPD & PWT) , like in the case of the United Arab Emirates. To solve this, we try to use a figure which is somewhere beween these competing sources.
16
17
Below, we have compiled a list of countries with huge difference between the two versions, as well as some graphs that show how the data changed .

19
To see the differences between all countries in both versions, see the next sheet.

The biggest differences can be also visualized from this excel file, in the sheet called " visual-qa".
