WisdomWisdomThe methods used here for scaling monster hit points and damage are based on "Calculating XP and encounter difficulty in D&D 5e". The modified monster should be similar in strength, both offensively and defensively, relative to the final CR as the original monster was relative to the starting CR. Attack and Health entries are scaled independantly of one another with the exception of Hit Points and Legendary Resistances which are scaled together.

For Health entries, ACs are adjusted to maintain the creature's damage mitigation at the modified CR relative to the starting CR. This process is independent of any adjustment made to the creatures hit points. When no hit dice are included in the "Dice" field the hit points bonus is scaled to fit the modified CR. However, when hit dice are included the number of hit dice and the hit points bonus are both scaled the same amount to fit the modified CR while the hit die is kept fixed.

For Damage entries, attack bonuses are adjusted to maintain creature's chance to hit at the modified CR relative to the starting CR. This process is independent of any adjustments made to the attack's damage. Abilities with saving throws can be included by converting the save DC to the equivalent attack bonus. When no damage dice are included in the "Dice" field the damage constant is scaled to fit the CR of the modified monster. However, when dice are included the damage modifier is held constant and only the damage dice are adjusted.

Scaling of monster base stats is based on observed trends from published monsters. These do not represent what stats a monster should have, only what they would have if they scaled like a typical published monster. By default these changes in stats have no impact on the modified creature's AC, HP, attack bonus, or damage dice.
