10/3/2015 16:30:55Sept 2015 This was my favorite section of the TAT on my coast to coast ride. The locals all seemed to think you couldn't get passed the turn-off for Chicken Creek but you can. It was a rough, rutted loose rock, deadly dropoff section to get thru but after coming down out of it the riding was fun, fast, and scenic. There is a lot of rock and GPS reflections in that area where Lockhart Basin Rd begins so it is confusing but doable. A heavily loaded KLR was probably not the best for this section but I made it. Once on the floor of the canyon it was fun, grippy, curvy trail. The Gateway to Adventure sign, Colorado River, The ash poolsLockhart Basin Road at Chicken Creek Turnoff where most locals think there is no way thruBigWrench

7/15/2017 9:02:03Riders beware: this is absolutely the hardest part in the TAT and should only be considered by expert riders. The first two miles after Chicken Corners turnoff is just about impassable and 18 miles after that is considered most difficult by Butler maps. The only thing that saved us was a good Samaritan Jeep driver who took the luggage off our bikes. Without that 80lbs of gear the Dakars did things I thought weren't possible. Even so, this leg took 10 hours to complete in dry conditions.
I believe Kevin needs to map a green workaround for this section, it is not rideable for a large percentage of riders.
The reward for this incredibly hard trail ride is equally incredible views. Revel in the fact that you are seeing vistas and rock formations that 99.995% of the population will never glimpse in person.Steep climbs with large steps, boulders and lots of loose rock. Descents are the same. Scout your line and ride it with confidence because if you stop in the middle of one of the dozen climbs you and the bike are going over.
Take lots of water! We rode this in July and consumed 6 liters each.

7/26/2017 19:21:05May 20, 2017 (west to east on Triumph Tiger 800XC's). Most amazing and challenging day ever! The ride from Monticello is beautiful and easy until you get on the mesa rim trail, then it is all-time beautiful and very challenging in places. We learned a lot about getting our big heavy bikes through the loose, steep rocky sections (go slow and pick your way through...they ain't light dirt bikes!). The section by Chicken Corners is intimidating, but we were able to pick our way down SLOWLY. Going up would be harder, but doable with experience or stubbornness. Plan on a long day.The trail along the mesa is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Mind blowing. Didn't see a soul. The Moab Brewery was the perfect way to end our day.The section by Chicken Corners looks impossible, but is make-able if you take your time. Many other challenging sections as well (several tip overs) but totally worth it.zjmikke
