7RI 7.9, W 7.2Students identify credible sources through teacher-provided opportunities.

Students determine which text (from a credible source) best supports a claim (provided by the teacher).

Students learn the main ingredients for paraphrasing (define plagiarism, giving credit to a source, and difference between paraphrasing and direct quotes). Note: Refer to 9th grade "Research Notetaking Chart" document for possible use.

Students will use various non-fiction texts to support multiple opportunities for practice in using the above skills.
To parallel the Next Gen standards which states that students need to answer "self-generated questions," the checkpoint could provide students with multiple claims from which to choose, and students choose the BEST developed claim to complete the task. Choosing the best claim could be part of the rubric with points awarded for choosing the best claim.

Using a given text, students will...

Develop a five sentence paragraph that begins with a claim provided by the teacher

Identify two valid text-based details to support the claim

Develop two paraphrases

Bring in necessary "grout" for cohesion (PROVIDE DETAIL)
