Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in SchoolsThe Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program is a school-based, group and individual intervention. It is designed to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and behavioral problems, and to improve functioning, grades and attendance, peer and parent support, and coping skills. Intended to be administered by mental health clinicians, CBITS uses cognitive-behavioral techniques (for example, psychoeducation, relaxation, social problem solving, cognitive restructuring, and exposure).

Inner Strength The Inner Strength Foundation in Philadelphia teaches mindfulness and systems thinking in High Schools. We run an in-school 12-week program with a strong academic component as well as practice component. I've been a practitioner for 40 years (I started in High School, went to Asia in the early 80s, did the 3 month retreat at IMS in 1985 and have been working with and teaching contemplative tools since.) The populations Inner Strength works with have experienced a high incidence of exposure to traumatic events and while the classroom isn't a place to address these issues, I make sure our instructors are well trained in trauma sensitive education (Philly has an active ACEs org and I present at the Philadelphia Trauma Conference each year) and racial literacy (Using the work of Howard Stevenson (UPenn) and his new org Lion's Story to be aware of one's own privilege, bias, and triggers, support students, provide choice, shift the exercises if trauma shows etc.
