8/8/20146:00 AM - 6:00 PMExplorers can go on ridealongs for either a half shift which is 12 hours or a full shift which is 24 hours; I did a half shift. FF Caro is a wildland firefighter in SD and he's an explorer at my post so we already knew each other. He picked me up and we drove to SD and on the way I was asking a few questions that were coming to mind. When we got to there, I got dressed in uniform and we headed over to the firestation. At first i made my rounds meeting the firefighters, engineer, and captain. Right away they put me to work and gave me the duties of a "boot"(a newly hired firefighter). I cleaned up after breakfast, did the dishes, then reported to the captain. After breakfast we got suited up and did pt, we ran a 4 mile hike in full gear which was extremely tiring. We got back to the station and went through different drills and they showed me around the engine that they use for fires. I noticed that there are SO MANY differences between wildland and structure firefighting. The primary sized hose used in structure is 2 1/2 inch but in wildland they use 1 3/4 inch because its easier to cary and maneuver. We practiced hose lays with full running water. Everything they were showing me, I was constantly comparing it to structure on the back of my mind. 12 hours12 hours

9/15/20141:00 PM - 3:40 PMOnce I got to the station Sgt. Saldecke took me to the Detective's Bureau where he introduced me to detectives and investigators. Afterwards he took me to the front where dispatch works and introduced me to more detectives and another volunteer. His shift ends at 1 PM so when he left i had an interview with a former crime scene investigator, Deputy Cortez. I learned so many new things from him and he gave me great advice on what to do with my future and how to pursue this career. He also provided me with insight as to what this career truly entails and it raised questions that I really need to think about and consider. After my interview with him I was working at the front and I interviewed a volunteer.2:40 hours15:40 hours

12/21/2014We went for a picnic at Snow Creek Park. Mr. Doe told me about his past and why he has made the decisons he's made throughout his life. He talked about his past in prison (which I then looked up at my mentorship). A stronger connection has been made and a deeper understanding of eacheother was also made.530:10 hours

1/10/2015John Doe, his daughter, and I went to the batting cages in Anaheim. Softball is/has been an outlet for both his family and mine. His actions and behavior seemed odd. His daughter expressed her concern for her father to me, privately. Afterwards, we went for ice cream at a local Rite Aid and picked up dinner for their family. I didn't stay for dinner.540:10 hours

1/18/2015The family and I(not John Doe) had lunch at their home and watxhed some football. We cleaned out boxes in their house and sorted through a lot of junk. They cleaned out so many things to donate to families in need. This day was by far the most revealing day of the time I'd been spending with them. There were some private possesions uncovered. 747:10 hours
