4
This document describes the variable naming convention defined in the Atmospheric Composition Group.
5
The variables are lumped in three categories in each sheet:
6
MeteoSummary
for metorological variables
7
AerosolsSummary
for aerosol varibles
8
GaseousPollutantsSummary
for gases
9
The sheet named varialbeTable-disscuion is used as reference to define the name of a variable.
10
11
Each sheets includes the following fields:
12
Variable*
New variable name proposed
13
Standard name*
Attribute required for the netCDF convention
14
Long name*
Attribute required for the netCDF convention
15
Variable description*
Attribute required for the netCDF convention
16
units*
Attribute required for the netCDF convention
17
Type*
Data type (real, integer, character)
18
Dimension*
Number of dimensions including time
19
dims*
associated dimensions (time,x,y,z,bin). Z could correspond either to pressure or model vertical levels
20
Correspondence to previous var.
Variable either from NMMB or CMAQ output to be used to calculate/extract the new variables
21
Transformation needed?
Type of transformation needed from the old to the new variable
22
Variable category
Meteorology, Air Quality, Aerosols, Grid definition or Dimension
23
Convention
Naming convention used: AEROCOM, NCEP, ECWMF, CMAS
24

additional comments
25
To be included in the formatted output?
Suggestion on wether to keep or to remove the variable
26
*Mandatory field
27
New variables can be created if needed, following the rules below:
28
Avoid variables with more than 4 dimensions (time,x,y,levels)
29
Follow the existing standard for aerosols’ and gas phase species naming
30
Avoid including underscores in the variable names
