K-12 Literacy Professional DevelopmentExecutive Director of C&I and ELA/Literacy TLs will facilitate professional learning opportunities for the Elementary, Middle , and High School aligned courses, as well as Instructional Coaches and HS Department Chairs. Professional development will support implementation of rigorous learning with the CCSS in both Reading and Writing across schools and align with the Great Teaching Matters Framework. Goals across sessions are to continue to develop the capacity of our teachers in ensuring rigorous and engaging, culturally responsive teaching and assessment practices that meet the needs of our students through core instruction. 4K-12 Literacy Intervention Cross Functional TeamExecutive Director of C&I will convene a CFT that will include members of Student Services, Office of Multilingual & Global Education, Secondary Programs, and Integrated Supports and Advanced Learning that is designed to ensure that decision making across schools around literacy interventions is data driven, aligned to research practices, and systems oriented in order to improve service to schools as well as provide coherence across the district in terms of how and what decisions are made around literacy interventions designed to meet the various needs of studentsMarcey Sorensen

4K-12 Biliteracy SupportTeacher Leader will work with literacy department to ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices are in alignment with best practices and research to support EL students. Social Studies Curriculum DevelopmentTeachers leaders will collaborate to provide intensive professional development for the development of new courses in the Middle School setting (pilot project in 3 schools) focused on new humanities courses. These courses will integrate the new Social Studies Standards and CCSS literacy, including reading, writing, listening, & speaking standards, with a focus on providing deeper learning experiences for students which challenge and engage all learners. K-12 Math Professional DevelopmentSTEM Director and Math Teacher Leaders will facilitate professional learning opportunities for the Cohort III Bridges Schools, Algebra/Geometry Teacher Team Leads, Instructional Coaches and HS Department Chairs along with job-alike professional development for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. Session goals and agendas will support implementation of rigorous learning with the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice across schools and align with the Great Teaching Matters Framework. Teachers from the Algebra/Geometry Teacher Team Leads will use their learning to contribute to the implementation of common unit tasks aligned to course scopes across middle and high schools. Goals across sessions are to continue to develop the capacity of our teachers in ensuring rigorous and engaging, culturally responsive teaching and assessment practices that meet the needs of our students through core instruction. K-12 Science Professional DevelopmentSTEM Director and Science Teacher Leaders will facilitate professional learning opportunities for the MS Early Implementer Schools, Science Lead Teacher Teams, HS Aligned Courses, and HS Science Department Chairs. Session goals and agendas will support implementation of the NGSS across schools and align with the Great Teaching Matters Framework. Teachers from the MS Science Lead Teacher Team will use their learning to contribute to the design of tools and resources that support the implementation of Amplify Science across schools. K-12 PE/Health Professional DevelopmentPE/Health and Wellness Coordinator will cultivate shared leadership among K-5 PE Lead Teacher Team and 6-12 Health Lead Teacher Teams, supporting their learning to be able to co-plan and co-facilitate professional learning for peers across schools. Professional learning opportunities will focus on supporting K-5 PE teachers, 6-12 PE teachers, 6-12 Health teachers, and HS PE/Health Department Chairs with the implementation of SHAPE standards across schools and align with the Great Teaching Matters Framework. Middle School Redesign & CoherenceExecutive Director of C&I will work with members of all Teaching & Learning Departments to ensure the work of the Middle School Redesign is moving forward according to the Adolescent Learner Project Matrix presented to the Board of Education last year. This would include work in the following areas a) master scheduling/instructional design b) curriculum & instruction c) social/emotional/behavioral health and d) multi-tiered systems of support. Madison Education Partnership (MEP)Contribute to the work of the Madison Education Partnership as a member of the Steering Committee on behalf of the district in order to collaboratively engage in supporting high-quality, problem-based research, contribute to policy discussions in order to improve program design, policy decisions, and outcomes for all MMSD students and families. The focus of MEP-directed work from 2016-2018 is MMSD’s four-year-old Kindergarten (4K) program. In 2018, there will also be a new line of research launched around attendance with a focus on middle schools and transition to high schools.Culleen Witthuhn

HS Department Chair Leadership Development C&I will facilitate a shared learning experience for high school department chairs from English, Math, Science and Social Studies with a focus on leading for equity and deepening leadership practices that support Black Excellence and the new Strategic Framework. The professional learning plan for department chairs will have a distinct focus on developing school-based leadership capacity in order to develop practices that create conditions that produce high levels of student achievement. Through this work, we will work to create conditions that focus on developing collective efficacy while strengthening our partnership within our own departments and department teams across the District. Advanced coursework and Tiered Extension development in Literacy, Math, Science, and the Arts for all students with a focus increasing opportunities for students of color
C&I will work collaboratively with AL to create K-5 extensions in the areas of Literacy & Math. C&I Literacy department will also work collaboratively with MS ALS to develop an advanced course sequence for Literacy for grades 6-8. C&I Arts Department will work with AL Leadership to develop a project plan to support Creativity across grades K-8. Parent & Community Supports - Tutoring & Community Engagement StrategiesThe Department of Curriculum and Instruction provides 4K-8 support for multiple community events to ensure we are supporting parents and families to engage in the deep learning that takes place in partnership with families. Teacher leaders also provide support to Elementary and Middle Schools of Hope through providing support to on site tutors who in turn provide support to our students.
