7 | Shaka Wasaga Boat Cruise | shakawasaga@gmail.com | Shakawassaga.com | "Plastic party cups are made from polystyrene (plastic #6). Each cup takes 450 -1,000 years to break down into microplastics in landfill and in the ocean. When polystyrene breaks down in a landfill, it leaches toxic chemicals into the surrounding soil." " Scientists have found fragments of plastic in 86% of all sea turtles and 43% of all marine mammals. When their bellies are full of plastic, animals are unable to digest the sustenance they need to live, and as a result, they starve. These plastics are carried through the food chain and eventually may be ingested by humans. According to researchers, humans may ingest between 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles each year." - https://supcups.com/pages/the-plastic-problem#:~:text=Plastic%20party%20cups%20are%20made,chemicals%20into%20the%20surrounding%20soil. Although our "Bring your own cup" policy is quite unconventional, and quite often not accepted well, it is a policy we refuse to change. YTD we have had approximitly 1000 guests on our boats and an average of 2 drinks per guest equaling over 2000 plasic disposibale cups. We understand it is not alot but we have always been quite environmentally contious and it is something we do feel quite strongly in. We tell each of our guests to bring a reusable travel mug. Out of the over 2k drinks we have served we have only sold 127 souvenir cups which acually, if we mandated the purchach, has cut into our profits for over $3k. Again it is a loss we are willing to sacrifice as plastic in our environment is such a big concern of ours. Another way we are operating in an environmentally friendly way is our toilets. The average tolilet used 6L of water per flush. Our toilets do not have a flush system to them and therefor decreasing our water consumption. "About half of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed since 1900. Some of the most productive habitats on the planet, wetlands support high concentrations of animals—including mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates—and serve as nurseries for many of these species. Wetlands also support the cultivation of rice, a staple in the diet of half the world’s population. And they provide a range of ecosystem services that benefit humanity, including water filtration, storm protection, flood control and recreation." - https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/water-scarcity. We know we are so lucky to live in a part of the world were we have an increadable resorce of water, but that doesnt mean we can't adopt minor changes to perserve what we see as limitliless but otheres see as a rapitly depleating resource. The chemical typically used in porta potties is formaldehyde. "Within the atmosphere, formaldehyde breaks down rapidly and creates harmful substances such as formic acid and carbon dioxide." "Studies have indicated that when animals are exposed to formaldehyde, it can make them sick, affect their behavior, appearance, breeding patterns and significantly reduce their life spans." https://www.surco.com/blog/portable-toilet-blue-chemical-explained/. Our toliets are composting toilets, meaning no water, no formaldehyde. https://natureshead.net/. The toilet actually seperates the two components in different containers. By doing so the material is concidered organic material. When the two components mix then it becomes a biological hazard. We use peat mulch in the solid's container to absorb the waste which again is all organic. We shop local! This 100% affect clamit change and reduces the greehouse gas emission associated with transportation. Our beer and ciders are from Wasaga and Thornbury; our vodka, gin and whiskey are from Collingwood; and our wine from New Market. "The transportation sector is responsible for 27 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. Light-duty vehicles – the cars, vans and light-duty trucks we drive - are responsible for almost half of that total. While automakers have been successful in reducing criteria air contaminant (CAC) emissions from cars and light trucks, fuel usage and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have grown steadily over the past two decades. That's because CO2 – the principle GHG linked to climate change – is an unavoidable by-product of the burning of fossil fuels. Although light-duty vehicles are more fuel efficient than they were in the 1970's, there are many more vehicles on the road today, and we're driving them further than before, thus using more fuel. While much of the energy use in Canada is necessary, there are times when we could use energy more wisely." - https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/communities-infrastructure/transportation/idling/4419. This is quite simple to understand, the less distance the product has to travel, the less emissions it produces to get here. We are constatantly looking for ways to decrease our carbon footprint as it is a subject that I personally believe is not a big enough concer for many people. I, as one of the owners, am always exploring different possibilites to make our business greener and ways we can adopt better habbits with our staff to ensure we make our small part on this earth a minimally damaging as possible. I would like to state that I think that this is a great initiative to better illuminate the possibilities and small changes that companies can take to run their business in a "greener" manor. As my final though, I would love to see better recycling programs for business as we dont have a recycling pick up at our location and are forced to bring it all home, which we often dont have enough space for in our bin. I find that portion very confusing as most resturants dont have proper recycling but consume an excessive amount of bottles and cans. I am actually willing to volenteer to help better streemline this process as it is a VERY large amount of consumer waste for the food/bev. industry. Thank you, Amanda Mazzotta

Once grown I transplant them into reusable growing pots in a greenhouse I put up every year using reusable poly. My fertilizer is organic as is my transplant powder. I don’t use any sprays or insecticide. When it’s time to make the sauce I use cooking implements that are all reusable, and have a green bin close at hand for all organic waste. All plastics from suppliers is recycled as well as the soil from the used pots. Blue bin and yard waste bags respectively. The sauce is bottled into glass and packaged in cardboard. Even my booth display is completely reusable and display boxes are repurposed construction waste board. The bags I use for sales are paper as well.

12 | The Nurturing farmer | thenurturingfarmer@gmail.com | https://thenurturingfarmer.ca/ | Food waste reduction plan - donating unsold items to the Wasaga Beach Food Bank Minimal carbon footprint - growing and selling to the local community Reduced emissions - growing on a human scale without tractors Waste reduction - opting for backyard compostable, recyclable materials, and or reusables Land stewarding - conscious effort to protect, build and repair the soil health and biodiversity on the farm Building soil health - through no-tillage, no-pesticides, increasing cover cropping and compost application vs synthetic fertilizers What makes my farm a sustainable business is my personal initiative to reduce packaging waste. I opt for packaging that can be backyard compostable by the consumer whenever possible and those that are made from recycled materials. At this time it is difficult to be plastic-free on the farm, with some items needing to be packaged in plastic (lettuce mix) with no alternative, but I select bags that have a chance of being re-used by consumers with zip seals. I make conscious decisions in all of my purchases, from seeds to compost, to search for items that can be purchased and created locally within Ontario to reduce the impacts created by shipping. I also have a food waste reduction plan. Items that aren't sold at the farmer's market are donated to the Wasaga Beach Food Bank, and everything else is composted on the farm to close the energy cycle. This season's sales have been better, so donations aren't as high, but I'm working to make an easier system to allow market goers to be able to purchase food for the food bank and then I deliver on their behalf on the next donation day. Unfortunately, the food bank only has so much fridge space, so they prefer to donate on Tuesday, which conflicts with the timing of the farmer's market.
