admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): You receive a decision about 4-5 weeks after your application is complete.
19
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): and what is everyone looking at studying?
20
evancp82evancp82: Let me start by asking a basic question. How are applications evaluated?
21
evancp82evancp82: I hope to study @ SIS
22
AmberF12AmberF12: I hope to study History
23
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): I am a history major!!!!!!!!!!!!
24
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): chris, we look at your college level work, application, and essay
25
AmberF12AmberF12: Yay!! woot woot for History
26
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): our evaluation is a holistic one
27
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): What questions of you have about the history program, Amber?
28
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): chris, for transfer students, we focus a lot on your college transcripts as that is the best indicator to us of how successful you are in college coursework, but we do also look at all of the other components, as well as fit with AU
29
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): Welcome to the Transfer Student Chat! We have admissions staff and current students online to answer any and all questions you have about applying to and attending American University as a transfer student.
30
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): *do
31
AmberF12AmberF12: What type of internships can I complete as a history major?
32
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): for everyone who just joined, where are you from, what are you looking to study and what questions can we answer for you? :)
33
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): amber- so many. I interned at the United States Holocaust Memorial museum. I have had friends work in archives, on the hill, for museums and so much more.
34
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): hi cruthberg!
35
nmontes1nmontes1: How is the Film/Motion Picture program at AU?
36
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): does anyone have any questions that we can answer for you?
37
AmberF12AmberF12: Wow that's fantastic
38
cruthbergcruthberg:  hello!
39
nicolesivnicolesiv: Hi, my name is Nicole, I am from Philadelphia, I am looking to study economics and environmental policy.
40
nicolesivnicolesiv: What's the study abroad program all about? can students study abroad more than once?
41
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): nmontes, it's really great - we are one of only 13 schools that belong to CILECT, an international film/tv org that oversees all film/tv programs in the world... you have to be invited to join... and there are tons of hands on opps here, plus you get to leave AU with the full rights to your film work
42
RKaufmannRKaufmann:  Hi, my name's Richard. I live in North Carolina, but I'm currently at college in Rhode Island. I'm hoping to study international relations.
43
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): hi nicolesiv, yes, students can study abroad more than once! we have great summer and january programs if you do not want to be gone for a whole year
44
cruthbergcruthberg: i have some question about admissions
45
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): AU Abroad offers 100+ programs in 44 different countries, ranging from France and Italy to Morocco and Cuba! Students can study abroad as early as second semester sophomore year, and while abroad they can decide to live with a host family and take courses in the native language or live with other AU students and take courses in English. Since it's all in-house, tuition, scholarships and financial aid remain the same while abroad, and courses can easily transfer back to your majors or minors here at AU. To view the list of Abroad options, visit http://auabroad.american.edu/
46
Mahlia PoseyMahlia Posey: Hi I'm Mahlia, I'm from Las Vegas and I was interested in studying in foregin language and communication media
47
nicolesivnicolesiv: awesome, and how is the honors program different from the regular curriculum?
48
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): nmontes - the film program here at AU is awesome! my minor is in cinema studies!
49
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): nmontes- i have a friend in the film program and she loves it. She just applied for an internship that wants to help sea life.
50
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): the honors program is a bit more intensive, and students usually take about 1-2 honors courses per semester
51
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): and obviously, you graduate from AU with honors :)
52
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): To learn more: http://www.american.edu/provost/honors/
53
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): mahlia - I'm a senior in the school of communications so i can help you out with any questions you've got about the school of communication
54
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): nicole -- students in the honors program take about 2 honors courses per semester - they are either honors versions of regular courses or special honors colloquia only offered to our honors students -- all honors classes are capped at 20 students, though our overall avg class size is only 23
55
cruthbergcruthberg: in the admissions process, do you guys look at a cumulative average from all prior institutions or is it just the most recent. If both, if I did EXTREMELY poorly in my first school, but pretty well in my second, how bad is that first school's GPA going to hurt me?
56
nicolesivnicolesiv: thanks jen and meagan
57
mverocetrola@gmail.commverocetrola@gmail.com:  Hi! My name is Veronica! I am from Venezuela. I'm a current Abroad at AU student and since I love this university I want to transfer. My major is Finance.
58
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): cruth- we look at cumulative avg but we also note upward trends
59
evancp82evancp82: cool to see such a diverse group!
60
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): veronica, that is great to hear!
61
nicolesivnicolesiv: do students at AU have opportunities to intern with politicians?
62
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): cruthberg, we look at all work done, but certainly would rather see an upward trend rather than a downward one
63
Mahlia PoseyMahlia Posey: AU_TianaH: awesome. Do you have to submit a portfolio ?
64
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): chris - yes, AU has all 50 states represented and over 140 countries!!
65
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): nicole - yes! tons!
66
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): nicole- yes. i have friends who work on the hill. i even had one friend who worked for al gore's environmental ngo
67
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): nahlia - no you don't need to submit a portfolio
68
nmontes1nmontes1: Do I have to send a portfolio of my work to be accepted into the Film program?
69
nicolesivnicolesiv: That's so awesome!
70
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): we do not require portfolios for any of our majors
71
mverocetrola@gmail.commverocetrola@gmail.com: So my question is do I have to send all my transfer documents at the same time?
72
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): veronica - no, you can send them sep. but your app won't be complete until we have all docs
73
evancp82evancp82: I am an Active Duty member of the military. I am seeking admission for Fall '12. In your experience, how have prior military managed the transition to AU?
74
cmarshcmarsh:  I am interested in the Public Health Program.  Is there a masters program that I could go into from the undergraduate program?
75
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): Chris, we actually have quite a few veterans on our campus!
76
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): there are several groups/organizations that our US vets join when they get to AU
77
cruthbergcruthberg: I spent a semester at the University of Arizona, and finished the semester with a .46 GPA. In my current institution I have a 2.75. That is just over a 1.6 cumulative average. In all honesty, do I basically have no chance of getting in?
78
Mahlia PoseyMahlia Posey: Thats nice to know. So whats the school of communications like? Are the advisers helpful? Because that's the huge problem I have at my current school.
79
nicolesivnicolesiv: What are the residence halls like?
80
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): cruth - unfortunately 2.5 is the minimum GPA for transfers
81
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): chris- ne of my friends is a veteran. he felt that AU was helpful in the transition to college/civilian life.
82
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): mahlia - the school of communication (SOC) is wonderful!
83
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): cruthberg, we look for a 3.0 GPA to be competitive for admission, and a 2.5 minimum GPA for transfers
84
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): so I would recommend perhaps staying at your current institution a little bit longer to raise your GPA before applying, otherwise I feel you will not get the news that you want.
85
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): Most of our transfer students who receive housing will be housed at the Tenley campus, about 1/2 mile from main campus (and right near the Metro), with a free shuttle running between the two locations. For those looking to live off campus, some options can be found here: http://www.american.edu/ocl/housing/Off-Campus-Housing-Postings.cfm.
86
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): mahlia - my adviser is one of the sweetest people i've met at AU. she's been there for me since the beginning of the my freshman year and has helped with all of my course selections
87
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): We guarantee housing to transfers who are admitted with 35 or less credits and who have submitted an enrollment deposit and housing application by July 1 (December 1 for spring transfers). Transfer students with more than 35 credits and those who also deposit after July 1 (or December 1 for spring transfers) will be considered on a space available basis.
88
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): Most residence hall rooms are 12'x15' and include a bed, desk, bookshelf and chair for each resident. All rooms also include a built-in wooden wall unit which includes closets, dressers and a plenty of shelving/cabinets for things like a television, refrigerator, DVD player, etc. All rooms are carpeted and have individually controlled heat and A/C.
89
au_tianahau_tianah(AU_TianaH): sometimes i just pop in to say hi to her and catch up
90
mverocetrola@gmail.commverocetrola@gmail.com: Thanks Jen! And other question: Since I'm an Abroad at AU student already and I'm in campus everyday, do I still have to send my documents by mail? Or can I stop by the admissions office and give some of them personally?
91
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): sorry for all the pre-written answers :)
92
nicolesivnicolesiv: OK, are they singles, doubles, etc? co ed?
93
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): veronica- you can stop by our welcome center and drop some off as long as they are official and sealed documents - the welcome center is on the 2nd floor of katzen
94
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): mverocetrola, you can definitely drop them off at the Welcome Center in Katzen, or you can drop them here at Hamilton
95
admissions_meaganadmissions_meagan(Admissions_Meagan): haha thanks Jen
96
au_nathancau_nathanc(AU_NathanC): nicole - residence halls are co ed. most students live in doubles
97
au_rachelrau_rachelr(AU_RachelR): nicole- most are doubles and the floors are co-ed (i don't think there is an all girls floor at tenley).
98
cmarshcmarsh: I am interested in the Public Health Program.  Is there a masters program that I could go into from the undergraduate program?
99
nicolesivnicolesiv: Thanks everyone
100
admissions_jenadmissions_jen(Admissions_Jen): cmarsh -- i don't believe we have a combined BA/MA in public health YET
