I transcribed this information in November 2003 both from the gravestones in the Bendorf-Sayn, Germany, Jewish cemetery, and the records of
2
the Jacoby Institute. The records are preserved by Dietrich Schabow, a historian in Bendorf-Sayn and expert on the Jews of Bendorf-Sayn.
3
4
This is an important cemetery because it contains burials of Jews from throughout the Germany who were patients in the Jacoby Institute, a
5
Jewish psychiatric institution. Starting in 1869, the Jacoby Institute treated people with conditions ranging from dementia to retardation to
6
alcoholism to paranoid schizophrenia. In 1940, the German government ordered that all acutely ill Jewish psychiatric patients in Germany be
7
brought to the Jacoby Institute. In 1942, the German government ordered the transport of all of the institution's patients to extermination camps.
