NEFLambethSE1 7HBYesNoNoTogether we can change the rulesWorking with other organisations, NEF aims to create a new economy that works for people and within environmental limits. We are guided by three missions:

A new social settlement
A new social settlement will ensure people are paid well, have more time off to spend with their families, and have access to the things we all need for a decent life.

A Green New Deal
The Green New Deal is a plan for government-led investment to reduce the carbon we emit and massively boost nature, while creating a new generation of jobs.

The democratic economy
We need to devolve state power and transform ownership of the economy to give us all an equal stake in the places where we live and work.

Underpinning all three missions is an acknowledgement that the rules and institutions that shape our economy are not forces of nature beyond our control, but have been designed by people.

Cosy Homes Oxfordshire is the result of a successful grant bid by three partners in Oxfordshire: Low Carbon Hub, National Energy Foundation, and RetrofitWorks. We received grant funding until 31 March 2021 to test and develop Cosy Homes Oxfordshire as a business model for delivering home retrofit.

We are very pleased that Cosy Homes Oxfordshire will be continuing to develop on the success and learnings of this pilot phase after March 2021. Project partners RetrofitWorks and the Low Carbon Hub will be continuing the service. Sadly, we have said goodbye to the National Energy Foundation as they focus on other projects – though we will continue to collaborate with them and their valuable home energy projects, particularly Better Housing Better Health and Superhomes.

The Architecture Lobby Green New Deal Working Groupgnd@architecture-lobby.orgAcross the United States with a lot of us located in New York CityN/A -- decentralized across the US but if you really need one, use 10027YesYesNoThe Architecture Lobby (TAL) is a grassroots organization of architectural workers that advocates for just labor practices and an equitable built environment. Founded in the United States and international in membership, we bring experience and expertise from many design fields—architecture, construction, planning, landscape, engineering, academia—to protect the rights and livelihoods of all workers. ‍ We support a federal Green New Deal (GND) as proposed in H.Res. 332 / S.Res. 166 and are committed to the resolution’s call for a just transition. In 2019 members of TAL formed a Green New Deal Working Group to focus on organizing for ecological justice as it relates to architectural labor, the built environment, and sustainable futures for all (read our founding Statement on the Green New Deal). The proposed GND legislation recognizes a just transition will require structural changes to the built environment. TAL believes that a deeper transformation rooted in equitable principles is necessary, and that GND legislation must consider infrastructure beyond individual buildings and contend with systemic problems of the building industry itself. We are also demanding a just transition for the entire building sector because, like energy workers, our livelihoods are entangled with the fossil fuel industry. We are motivated by the urgency of climate action and committed to long-term collaboration with allied people and groups across policy, practice, and advocacy.https://gnd.architecture-lobby.org/

Zero Carbon Daviot info@zerocarbondaviot.orgAberdeenshireAB51 0HZYesYesNo Zero Carbon Daviot is a community run organisation, awaiting confirmation as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). The group was established to bring about radical reductions in carbon emissions in order to avoid runaway climate change.Time is running out to limit the effects of climate change and although the Government have set targets to decarbonize our society by 2045, many studies show that these targets are not ambitious enough. For most of us this means changing how we run and heat our homes, how we work and travel, and reducing the impact of what we buy and consume.

We believe that we have the opportunity to decarbonize our community faster, making our homes warmer, our air cleaner and our lives healthier, all while helping to reduce our carbon emissions and providing a secure future for generations to come.

We want to engage everyone in our community to make a real and meaningful difference in the next 10 years. Initial levels of interest have been high and the group has set the ambitious target of decarbonising our community by 2030.

Loco Homes Retrofit info@locohome.coopGlasgowG44 4SLYesYesNoWe’re building a novel community-based approach to home energy decarbonisation. We aim to reduce the hassle of maintaining and improving homes while incorporating energy efficiency and decarbonisation measures.Loco Home Retrofit CIC is a Co-operative in Glasgow providing advice to homeowners who want to make their homes more comfortable while also getting more energy efficient, ready for Net Zero. We have learnt a great deal about the motivations and challenges for homeowners. We are now inviting householders, local tradespeople and professionals to join the Co-operative and influence the next stage of our development. This blog sets our proposed approach – please let us know what you think.

The UK is the world’s fifth largest contributor to climate change (Our World in Data, 2019) and, in Glasgow, heat and energy for homes account for 31% of reported emissions (BEIS, 2020). If runaway climate change is to be avoided, then these emissions must be brought close to zero within the next 10 to 15 years. That’s about 80 retrofits per day across Glasgow starting today. However, action by the UK and Scottish governments to reduce emissions is developing slowly and there is an urgent need to build retrofit skills and capacity (Scot Gov, 2020). Grassroots action can reach places the government can’t, while also building the necessary public support for bold government intervention.

Most emissions from homes in Glasgow are from gas boilers. Eliminating these emissions will be achieved through a combination of energy efficiency such as insulation and replacing gas boilers with renewable alternatives such as heat pumps. To retrospectively fit (‘retrofit’) these improvements to existing properties can be challenging, especially for home owners. Retrofit can often be complex, risky, expensive and disruptive. However, this needn’t be the case. Through our research we have found that many households have the intent and the opportunity for retrofit but just need some help to get started. Loco Home Retrofit aims to provide that support.

UK Hempcreteinfo@ukhempcrete.comDerbyshireS40 1LGhttps://www.ukhempcrete.com/NoNoYesHempcrete services from the professionalsUK Hempcrete is a UK construction company specialising in the use of Hempcrete or ‘hemp-lime’, and other natural building materials. We provide a complete range of services for home owners, builders and architects who want to build with these ‘deep-green’ construction materials.

A relatively new composite material made from wet-mixing hemp shiv with a lime binder, Hempcrete provides a natural, vapour-permeable, airtight insulation material which also has great thermal mass, giving it a uniquely effective thermal performance. Using Hempcrete in your building creates healthy (chemical-free and damp-free) indoor environments. It is a “better-than-zero-carbon material”, locking away more atmospheric carbon for the lifetime of the building than was emitted during its construction.

In new build, Hempcrete is usually used to form walls, in combination with a timber structural frame. It can also be used to create an insulating floor slab or roof insulation, allowing the entire thermal envelope of the building to be formed from Hempcrete.

Because it is vapour permeable and has the ability to form itself around any shape before setting, Hempcrete is the ideal material for upgrading the thermal performance of older traditional and historic buildings. It is particularly suitable for repairing timber frame infill panels, or adding insulation to solid masonry walls, and works in harmony with the original building fabric in traditional buildings to prevent moisture from becoming trapped in the wall.

Radical Housing Networkradicalhousingnetwork@gmail.comUK WideUK Widehttps://www.radicalhousingnetwork.uk/YesNoNoA network of groups and activists fighting for housing justice.Politicians from across the political spectrum say we need to build hundreds of thousands of new houses to solve the housing crisis. The government wants to change the planning system to fast-track these new developments.

Housing campaigners, however, have never supported this pro-developer agenda and we have long opposed new developments that are largely unaffordable or come at the expense of demolishing social housing. We have argued that building social, not private, housing is the solution to the housing crisis.

But the climate crisis poses a new challenge to us about whether we should still support new house building at all.

The scientific consensus is that we need to slash greenhouse gas emissions dramatically in this decade to have any chance of avoiding a catastrophic ecological and societal crisis.

When construction already accounts for 10% of our greenhouse gas emissions how do we reconcile these conflicting interests?

An independent review of consumer advice, protection, standards and enforcement of energy efficiency and renewable energy
In October 2015 the Secretaries of State for DECC and DCLG, Amber Rudd and Greg Clark commissioned Dr Peter Bonfield (Chief Executive of independent building science centre BRE) to chair an Independent Review of Consumer Advice, Protection, Standards and Enforcement for UK home energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.

The review covered the following issues:

Consumer advice and protection: what supports consumers’ decisions ahead of an installation and what help is available when things go wrong?
Standards framework: what ensures that the right products are fitted to the right properties in the right way?
Monitoring and enforcement: what ensures that poor quality work is dealt with effectively, and do the arrangements for audit, compliance-checking and sanctions provide sufficient assurance of this?

From the outset the project team agreed and adopted an inclusive approach to the review, actively seeking the views of several hundred organisations: trade bodies, energy providers, manufacturers, installers, trainers, standards bodies and consumer groups who have thousands of people in their collective outreach.

The findings and recommendations of the review were published in December 2016 in a report entitled Each Home Counts.

In the long term, this will help to ensure all home improvements contribute to achieving the highly energy efficient, low carbon housing stock we need to tackle climate change.

Energiesprong is a revolutionary, whole house refurbishment and new build standard and funding approach. The mission of Energiesprong UK is to scale this approach in the UK market.

The Energiesprong standard focuses on creating desirable homes that people love to live in. Because an Energiesprong retrofit (or new build) has the very best energy standard available, it uses the money that would normally be paid on energy bills and maintenance to pay for the works.

The Energiesprong approach can do this while assuring the cost of living does not go up, because the standard guarantees real life performance for both indoor comfort and energy use for up to 40 years.

‍Finally, and because desirability is at the forefront of what Energiesprong is about, the retrofits are also quick to install: a complete house makeover should take less than 10 days.

Retrofit For the Futureenquiries@bregroup.comHertsWD25 9XX
https://www.bretrust.org.uk/knowledgehub/retrofit-for-the-future/
YesNoNo
Retrofit for the Future was a programme led by Innovate UK to explore how existing homes in the UK can be improved to use less energy, cut carbon emissions and ultimately save costs. By its end in 2014 it had catalysed the retrofit of over 100 homes of varying types across the UK. During the process the goal of the programme was to reduce the in-use CO2 emissions of each property by 80%.
Energy use in homes accounts for 14% of UK Green House Emissions. Unfortunately, the UK are currently not meeting their goal set for 2030 – to reduce these emissions by 24%.

There are 29 million existing homes across the UK, rising to an estimated 30.5 million by the end of 2022, all of which must be resilient to the effects of climate change whilst reducing their energy needs, carbon emissions and running costs. New build homes can implement novel approaches to these challenges, whilst existing homes may need to undergo a retrofitting to meet the UK’s Net zero carbon targets.

Retrofitting is the process of introducing new materials, products and technologies to existing assets . In the built environment retro fitting is usually carried out to repair damaged or deteriorating structures and upgrade internal systems. However, there is an increasing driver to reduce and optimise the energy efficiency of an asset to improve affordability and also raise comfort levels for occupants and owners
