Lots of nice walks
Parking, cars parked on pavements
4
There are buses
Frequency and seat availability particularly at peak travel times
2
Buses could use the bus station instead of blocking Huddersfield Road. Volume of traffic on Holmfirth Road, used as rat run and traffic calming is inadequate particularly at school times
6
Love the historic buildings and the work local town council have done to bring the civic buildings back into use
6
Lots of open space very accessible
462
Sadlyany shops close, too many hair and beauty places

I would love for home owners to take pride of the streets they live in, weed and sweep would make all the difference

Frequency of public transport to Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Slaithwaite
I would have been happy if a bus for the hospital could be re-introduced.
Also could the bus travel to Linthwaite occasionally.
5Frequency of buses, clean, accessibility. More pram space needed.
Plenty of bus stops.
Access to timetables - these tend to be mainly online or in the bus station.
Unless travelling regular to the bus station, they tend not to feature on journeys.
Direct bus to hospital still advertising when service is unavailable from Meltham advertised stops.
3Good pedestrian crossing routes via pelican crossings in Meltham.
Free parking
Reduce traffic calming measures on Slaithwaite Road Meltham.
Traffic still speeding. Golcar Brow Road, Meltham congested also used as through run from Red Lane/
Birmingham Lane. No junction marked at Golcar Brow/Sunny Bank.
More blue bade parking
Parking on pavements, parking near junctions near schools.
5Robert Ashton Park, Green spaces in centre well cared for and used well to include public events/ activities.
There are good well organised walks on offer to the public.
Good choice of local shops.
Housing estates look unkempt
Some potholes
5We are fortunate to be able to be in natural space in a short distance of time.
Beautiful parks and countryside with amazing views.
Clean, safe walks
Dog mess
Rewilding
Perhaps more allotments
4We are fortunate that we have plenty of green space to play games and keep fit.
The Carlile centre has a changing menu of activities for arts, reading, information and promoting/exhibiting local makers crafts.
The Church Hall caters for dances ,panto and coffee charity days.
Having a Post Office is essential for All walks of the Community.
Even more recreational fitness equipment n parks activities for keeping fit.
6We have a good mix of shops by local traders, and supermarket, schools, doctors, chemists, library, charity shops, advice centre. Places where people can volunteer. Clubs for All ages.
A recycle and tip for items to be disposed of- very important
Better internet service
Cinema
Less takeaways & associated litter
4
We are lucky that we have a busy night time economy - eating, drinking and social activities day and night. There are good volunteering opportunities in all walks of life and hobbies. We still have jobs in industries as well as shops.
4
There is a good mix of housing - social and privately owned mainly with gardens. These cater for All ages, particularly the older generation to have sheltered support.
More support in supported living.
5There has always been a good mix of social opportunities from Toddler groups to volunteering in later life and pensioner clubs.
Meltham is a good village which helps friends, neighbours.
Council newsletter and various websites for promoting what is happening.
Free internet access in library.
5Meltham Memories/Scarecrow Festival - McMillan Art Festival - Comedy, choir.
People like to get involved with groups and help to make a difference to the community.
4
Daytime there are always lots of people about.
Some of the lights near estates could be better. Tend to walk in centre of road if not well lit.
4
Most things look good.
Weeds growing all over
3
Traffic reduction of it
Less traffic - especially at peak times of day

I live in the area
4
Bus services are good
There is far too much traffic and people speeding, some public footpaths need maintenance and there should be signs warning road signs where people regularly ride their horses on the road (red lane, mill moor road area)
6
I regularly use the bus to Huddersfield. It's regular and well used.
7
Free parking in the village is great for all sorts of things.
Too much traffic!!!
5
Parks and Greenway are great and well maintained.
High street shops are increasingly low quality and conservation area is not enforced. Streetscape in the village could be improved with trees and plants.
7
Easy access to the surrounding countryside in every direction.
6
There is quite a few places of different sizes and activities.
Improvements to Robert Ashton park are catered for older kids.
5
Schools are all good and nice to have a choice. Community halls and churches are great bases for community events.
Variety of shops could be better. Very few preschool places in the village considering there's 3 primary school - we had to go outside the village.
3
Some locally run shops.
Variety of shops. Limited opportunity for training and entry jobs.
Could have a community job board
6
Good variety and well sought after homes.
6
Cafés, pubs, parks and community events.
Variety of shops could be improved to have a little bit more reason to spend more time in the village.
A restaurant other than Indian
5
Generally good.
I've witnessed a couple of nasty incidents of racism in which is a concern.
5
Generally great people live here.
Street lighting could be improved. Particularly trees growing over them.
66
Town Council and Kirklees council seem to listen and the Meltham newsletter is great for communication and feeling listened to.
Pedestrian transport.
High street.
Improvements to footways.
Planning enforcement.
Public realm improvement in the village.

Parking is easy enough although does appear to be a very full central Car Park at times.
I am not sure but the crossroads is soooo busy in the centre. I am not sure if traffic lights would work/have been considered when coming from Coop end it is virtually impossible and dangerous to turn right.
5
Regularity of 324
5
As previously stated
5
The town looks tidy, and I am proud to live here
Hoping the shop on corner (previously nest) not left vacant for too long and I live near Durker Roods hotel (danger, crime etc.) and Bishops Way nursing home (horrific noises) both of these have caused us huge concern over past year.
7
Well, this is outstanding in Meltham
5
Nice cricket field, lovely park playground improvements, great Skate Park.
Refurb the club house at Sports Complex it looks dated
Proper flood lit astro turf pitch for Meltham Footy Club
The litter in Park where my son plays footy is awful could there be a regular pick?
66777757* Durker Rood hotel
* Litter in Broadlands Park
* Astro turf for Meltham Athletic football club would be super amazing

Additional buses added to route.
The additional buses and others are often late or don't turn up at all.

People regularly parking on pavements. More traffic wardens needed.
5

2
Stop people parking in pavements. Our road is terrible for it and pedestrians end up in the road. Make sure public footpaths are not overgrown. The speed humps on Slaithwaite Road do not work, people drive down the middle of the road to avoid them, it is dangerous.
3
The little bus that goes from Morrisons around Meltham
Better transport links to Slaithwaite and Marsden. It's a shame Meltham doesn't have a train line.
5
I think there is an OK level of parking in Meltham
Would a roundabout outside the Swan help the traffic on Huddersfield move more quickly?
2
Meltham feels like a place you drive through and don't stop. It has been more attractive in previous years with flags and flowers. It is missing a gathering point in the centre and has fallen way behind it's neighbouring villages in terms of community spirit. The surrounding walks should be advertised and social media used. Could Durker Roods be compulsory purchased and turned in to a centre for the local community?
5
Lots of lovely surrounding walks we like to enjoy with the dog. Lots of wildlife
Reduction in dog mess being left, some of our walks are disgusting. Community opportunities should be more widely advertised. It would be nice to see a wider community spirit
4
The sports centre and Carlisle institute
Advertise these facilities better, engage with social media
3
We have morrisons, a co-op, a butchers, a florist, a gift shop, deli, pubs, cafes, 2 GPS and pharmacists, 2 restaurants
I personally would like to see more eateries and meltham become a foodie destination like the surrounding villages, there is nothing different here to attract people. The Pink Elephant would be perfect as a street food/coffee/craft beer opportunity as it has space to have tables outside, unlike the rest of the centre. Durker Roods is also an ideal space to create something like the Manor House at Lindley. Give Meltham an identity
3
Crossroads for advice and Carlisle centre. Fourth fiend tries its best with different food vendors and events but it isn't big enough for the whole tien to visit
As per previous question, we tend to leave Meltham and go to surrounding villages for eating and socialising as there is not much to do in Meltham. The streets are quiet and there isn't the hustle and bustle of other places. People mostly drive through Meltham. I've had lots of people ask why I live here
4
There is a good mix of housing. Friends of the Greenway and pleasure gardens have done a great job maintaining these areas
Increase community spirit and people looking after their streets and taking pride
4
There are events on at the Carlisle institute and fourth fiend. We are attending a philosophy course atm. There are some exercise classes in the local churches.
More exercise classes and events. Make sure things are advertised and increase social media use. Increase opportunities for socialising, more cafes, eateries than the other shop types in the centre. Make it attractive for people to visit and businesses to set up here.
3
Meltham has lots of history and the meltham memories event and scarecrow festival are lovely.
Develop a sense of pride in the town, increase volunteering in looking after our town. As per my previous comments, make Meltham a place people want to come to. It has a negative reputation in the wider area as somewhere that has been forgotten about
5
I feel safe in my home and surrounding area
There have been comments or drug paraphernalia being found in the park at the bottom of Sunny Heya (needles.) this needs addressing
4
Meltham is a clean town I believe. I have seen volunteers out painting railings etc
Make it more attractive, some flowers, flags. Do not let the tip close completely as this will encourage fly tipping etc
4
I pick up litter on our street and make sure the pavement outside our home is kept clean and tidy
I am not aware of how to get involved apart from what I see on social media about the Greenway and pleasure gardens
I would like to see Meltham become a destinationfor people to visit and not the poor neighbour of Holmfirth, Honley, Marsden and Slaithwaite. We need more opportunities for socialising that don't necessarily include drinking alcohol. A decent coffee house, yoga studio, brunch place, evening meal that isn't an Indian. Look at how Marsden and Slaithwaite have been developed in the last few years. Compulsory purchase Durker Roods and make something amazing that is affordable. Make the centre attractive by using flags, lighting, flowers. Encourage walkers to visit by advertising what Meltham can offer - local walks etc
I know many local people would like to have more of a high street feel they can visit. Please don't allow a vape store to open in place of Nest.

Ask Meltham 2024 survey
5
Free Local bus for elderly or infirm
Pavements and tracks could be better for people who like to walk.
6
Additional buses just announced to Huddersfield making them more frequent
More buses to Holmfirth and Slaithwaite would enable more visitors
6
Free parking in Meltham is great at bringing people into the village
Stop the idea of charging for car parks in villages like Meltham
6
The old buildings have been put to good use. Saving them for the future
Ensuring local shops look smart and welcoming. Ensuring they are pram and disability friendly.
6
Lots of good walks around Meltham and good Walkers are Welcome Group
Ensuring paths are cleared of overgrown weeds, nettles, brambles to keep access open.
7
The Pleasure Grounds, Robert Ashton Park and Broadlands Recreation Ground have all been updated recently with new play equipment
The path in the Pleasure Grounds needs resurfacing as it’s hard for pushchairs and Wheelchairs to go over the bumpy path.
6
Good schools, two doctors, one dentist. Some good community groups too.
Have funds available to assist any new groups get going.
6
Some great community groups I.e Friends of the Pleasure Grounds and Meltham Greenway.
Need to somehow promote these groups to encourage more volunteers. Need to encourage businesses too
6
A good variety of houses and prices.
Most new builds are 4+bedrooms so need more smaller homes/bungalows to help people to downsize yet stay in the village
6
Coffee mornings every week are great. Good sports clubs too.
Encourage or help in keeping these going and promote the ones to the elderly so they know what’s available.
5
A lot of historic buildings and interesting history. Good community spirit. A proactive town council. Lots of things to do.
Encourage people to be proud of their village. Ie tidying their gardens, cutting back bushes that overhang pathways. Encourage people to use local shops more.
6
Nice community. Friendly people.
Keep teens occupied by having clubs or safe areas for them as it’s groups of teens that generally make people feel unsafe at night.
6
Town council are proactive in looking after places or calling for volunteers to help. They have a paid litter picker who does a great job
Householders need to be asked to cut back their bushes/trees/weeds/brambles that overhang footpaths. More weeding of paths. Roads aren’t good with too many potholes.
4
The council have a newsletter that keeps people informed of what is going on and contact details are on there.
A website for the council with lists of all volunteer groups, planning applications, grants, what’s going on etc would be good. There might be one but if so, needs more promotion

to support Meltham's growth
3
the speed bumps have improved the excessive speeding by unemployed boy-racers and class A selling Chelsea tractors. The only negative impact it had is that those drivers are now driving in the middle so they are still bypassing the bumps.
busy and built up areas like new housing estates are impossible to walk without getting onto the road. Most of the time parked cars are taking up the pavement and if its not that bushes are overgrown with hidden dog "treats" underneath so you end up using the road for walking. I think Meltham would benefit from a walking path between the Will's O'Nats and the junction. Pub and dog walkers take their lives into their hands when you walk on the main road back to Meltham. There should be enough gap between the wall and road to make space for a path. Currently you cannot walk on the grassy area as its so over grown and muddy when the weather turns.
2
for whatever reason the traffic jams have started becoming less frequent so that is positive.
travelling between neighbouring villages are near impossible unless you Uber it. There isn't anything that is worth coming to Meltham however Marsden/Slawit/Holmfirth are full of activities. To get to these places public transport isn't available. Travellers rest is also causing bottle neck when they are busy. Cars are just left on the side of the road before and after the 30 sign. There is an unused field right next to the pub, I am surprised that the farmer hasn't turned the field into a car park for those occasion. Is there anything that can be done about that? I am sure the pub/local business would benefit people wanting to come and spend their money? I have looked into using public transport for my work as i work on the north side of Huddersfield and to get to work, it would take me an hour and half which is 3 times longer then in a car.
4
currently the carpark in the centre of Meltham is free and always available. I would hate to see it turned into a pay to stay car park. I am sure it will have a negative impact on those few local businesses that are in the area.
Travellers rest need an overflow carpark or stop cars blocking the pavements for walkers.
2
The centre of Meltham is dire. Apart from getting a quick haircut you wouldn't want to come to the centre. Whilst Marsden and Slawit are booming with new businesses I haven't seen any improvements for years. I am a middle aged professional with disposable income but I couldn't support any of the businesses. FF tries but no outdoor space and most of the time its a kinder-garden. The local pubs are a scene out of Shameless especial The Swan, I'm sure you have to have nicotine stained fingers and mild Carling addiction to enjoy that establishment. Pink Elephant looks very dirty and tired inside and out. Meltham Spice is just to easy to rip....speak for itself. There is no life left in Meltham. H-Lounge is probably a money laundering place as its never open. If you wanted to get a coffee your options are very limited whilst Marsden/Slawit/Holmfirth is overflowing with business that are offering hot drinks etc. There is none of that locally.
4
good walks around Meltham
Meltham need to attract business that are not LED light lit - Turkish barber, carwash, vape shops and questionable hygiene rated takeaways. We have a local coffee roaster but no cafe. People are not drinking as much they are into brunches and such which Meltham isnt offering. they need to tap into that. a lot of us working from home so they could support businesses. Cafes etc that are dog and remote work friendly could be beneficial.
4
as far as I know there are no public toilets, quite a few derelict buildings in the centre. Some play parks are riddled with used needles. The grave yard next to path leading to Morrisons from the council estate is very dirty and not suitable for dogs. 100s broken bottles, someone must have decided to empty bins of recyclable bottles, lucozade and monster cans. right next to the allotment and park. We ended up carrying the dog up the steps due to the broken glasses and thats in the centre of Meltham....
1
doctors and dentist are within reach, plenty of schools and such facilities.
this is where i have to rank Meltham the lowest. There is absolutely nothing that attract outsiders. No annual festivals, venues, independent shops/businesses. When we moved to Meltham we were told there is nothing here and they were right. I would never walk to Meltham centre, there is nothing to go for. Meltham could offer so much more, loads of walks, 1000s of residents. The right business could be supported by locals so much more. You drive to any other places, Uppermill, Holmfirth, Marsden, Slaitwaite and the place is live. No flags or buntings around important days, Xmas light is none existent.
24
plenty of housing types and properties for sale
11
Meltham doesnt stand out, nothing to offer to visitors. Dont understand how thats possible when any other village in the area is rising and we are at the bottom.
5
I havent had any bad experiences nor have heard anything that would make me worry
the parks need cleaning up, especially the bottom of SunnyH estate, next to the allotment. broken bottles, used needles
44top priority is opening businesses in the centre of Meltham. that needs sorting out. the rest will follow but until then people will not come to visit.
new businesses will create jobs, we have enough people in Meltham to cater for. Slawit and Marsden are small villages therefore they heavily rely on Train/Bus services. Meltham doesnt have that issue.
Approach other businesses in other villages to open up their shops in Meltham. Restaurants and Cafes are crying to be open here. Marsden has just over 3k people. they have 8 cafes, Meltham has nearly 9k residents and 1 cafe. How can 8 cafes survive in such a small village?

Footpaths are becoming very overgrown in certain parts. More footpath clearing is needed.
1More frequent weekend and evening services.
More reliable service is required. Too many cancelled buses.
1Market place is a joke as is getting out of Westgate onto Station Street.
Why do buses need to clog Huddersfield Road up when there is a bus turning circle?

Don’t build on green fields.

Do away with Kirklees. Meltham, Henley, Holmfirth should join with Saddleworth.
Do away with Kirklees Council, not fit for purpose.

I live in Meltham and am keen to improve the services in the area and the quality of life for all inhabitants.
6
Easy access to footpaths. Stiles kept in good use around the Catch. Pleasure Gardens very attractive as is the park.
Litter picking needs to be done around the village and perhaps removal of weeds from pavement edges. Never sure if there is a regular group that can be joined to get on top of this. Sweeping of leaves in autumn relies on nearby residents to clear them.
6Good link to Huddersfield during the day.
Link between Slaithwaite and Holmfirth is good during the day but limited, not sure it connects with the train from Slaithwaite to Manchester.
Bus to Honley and beyond
Need to ensure that the buses to Slaithwaite and Honley link effectively with the train services
Slaithwaite to and from Manchester and should be available at rush hour time as well as during the day and should be advertised. Same with the Honley service to link with the train to Sheffield.
Review of the cancellation of the train to attend the hospital and how it links with visiting hours as well as enabling people to attend out patients appointments, without having to go into town and out.
5All car parking is free of charge. Good car park at Carlile Institute, behind the Co-op and behind the Waggon and Horses. Parking being improved at Morrisons.
The 19 speed bumps through the village have made a difference to the flow of traffic and reduced speed especially up and down Slaithwaite Road.
Stop people parking outside the post office on Carlile Street as they cause a dangerous obstruction. Review parking around the church especially opposite the Church Hall where people park to collect a sandwich. Creates an obstruction and makes it dangerous turning out of the church hall car park.
6
The village is blessed with many buildings, Carlile Institute which is well used, the old Town Hall for Crossroads. The Park and the Pleasure Gardens. Resources in Sunny Heys area, sports area and cricket ground. The Greenway walk from Morrisons which is not that well signposted but really well used.
The dilapidation of Durker Roods which is dreadful and a huge loss to the village. Access to Folly Dolly Falls could be improved and signposted. Signage for the walk around Meltham as many of signs have disappeared.
6
There are green spaces in the centre of the village and within the Broadlands estate, as well as th Greenway. The areas are looked after by volunteers. The park has toilet facilities as does the Carlile Institute. There are allotments which are well subscribed.
Could usefully have more bins for dag waste to stop the leaving of bags on trees etc.
There has been tree planting but more would be positive along with rewilding.
There is vandalism of benches and open space.
6
there is the park, the pleasure gardens as well as the football pitch, cricket ground, bowling green and sports centre as well as many footpaths . We have a small library which is accessible whenever the post office is open. There is a Scout and Guide Hall as well as church halls, Crossroads Centre and pubs all of which provide a host of activities in the village. there is an index of activities which is kept updated by Crossroads
Better advertising of the groups and activities within the village and area to encourage and enable more people to attend and use the resources. Better activities for young adults and teenagers.
5
Crossroads provides support in the community sadly with a Foodbank also with activities and with advice and guidance. The library is still here and has access to IT for those who need it. We have a Post Office. We have an excellent independent butchers. Two doctors surgeries plus 2 opticians and a dentist. Not sure if this provides NHS. Need resources for young adults and teenagers. proactive church and perhaps the resources could be channeled into one church in Meltham?
Too many fast food outlets with limited healthy options. a lack of resources for teenagers and young adults so with young people look at provision for them offering a safe space and activities they want to engage in. A restaurant in the village offering non asian food.
Meltham is a very white mainly British community, review how we welcome others from diverse ethnic communities. Look at how the community up and off Slaithwaite Road is incorporated into the community in the centre.
5
There are opportunities for volunteering
The community is more of a dormitory village and whilst there are businesses here they are fairly small. The need to be more diverse, with a wider range of shops and outlets in the village, there is nothing that would attract others from outside to visit the village. A recent venture to open a wine bar failed as did a venture to open a hardware shop but we are overrun with hairdressers and barbers. Need a better variety of businesses. It thrives as a place to live but not as a place to shop or socialise in.
The building of houses in the village has little social or low cost housing provision contained with in it. The village has a wide range of housing mostly historical. The social housing needs to be better maintained as it can look uncared for. It is seemingly a desirable place to live.
Ensure there is affordable good quality social housing provision.
5
There are activities available for adults but they re not always well advertised. there is a directory of activities, the Town Council provides a quarterly newsletter which is now being properly delivered to the whole village. The churches are proactive. There are a range of activities for the community with a gap for young people.
Need to consider how we can develop a cafe culture in Meltham for people to socialise during the day and in the evening. Better promotion for the groups that are in the village and how we can work together to improve the environment and life experience of all residents.
5
I feel that the community is welcoming and does have a range of activities going on. The community recently worked together to produce a quilt celebrating the area which many local groups are now displaying. To become involved in the community you need to be aware of what is available. Perhaps a community hub/shop supported by Town Council and or Crossroads and the churches. I know some people in my community through things I have chosen to engage in.
Being involved requires an input from individuals as well as you need to go out into the world and be active. But you need to know what is available and this needs to be publicised. Groups need to ensure they welcome new comers and that they listen to suggestions for change as others may have good ideas. We need a bit of a culture shift to be responsible for our community and not expecting THEY, whoever they are to fix everything. Communication is key.

Meltham in the know is a forum for sharing information and seems a positive site. There are some ginnels which could be better lit but generally it does not feel an unsafe place to walk around in the evening or at night. Not aware of any no go areas.
Need to tackle the issue that is Durker Roods it is a magnet for anti social behaviour as well as a being a waste of a building that could be used as a positive venue/accommodation in the village. It has become an eyesore.
Meltham Town Council is proactive and does do much for the village and the area. Crossroads and The Carlile Institute are also very active in the area. There are a host of volunteers who maintain the Greenway, The Pleasure Gardens and the Park but we as a community can always do more with regular litter picks. Local authority has cut back on street maintenance and sweeping so things do look uncared for and need some action.
.I'll mention here the need to increase recycling which will be affected if the tip is open less. Not everyone has a car so recycling need to be more accessible. Not clear who you report issues to and if you do whether the LA has the capacity to respond in the current climate
5
Meltham Town Council is definitely a positive and a very active voice as is our local councillor. Not sure about our new MP. The speed bumps were definitely a voice from our councillor and are a positive move in reducing speed. There are community groups and social media if you wish to engage, but not all communities are involved.
I am not clear how some issues can be taken forward and where to go with positive ideas and suggestions as well as raising issues. If you have a n issue then perhaps you should also have a possible solution to propose. I haven't taken action of litter kicking and week removal from pavements buts do think these things need to be addressed. Would need some equipment and am sure it is available but just not sure who to approach so haven't tried.

I'm not really sure what it is you are wanting to know, however I've lived in Meltham for almost 25 years and seen it grow and the green spaces taken over. There is so much traffic and the speed which cars go up and down my road is beyond belief especially when there are so many cars parked on the road. I feel that some sort of traffic calming measures should be put in place, for example make it a 20 mph zone up to Leygards Lane.
2

Encourage people to cross at the crossings and not by the Crossroads shop

I no longer drive. Parking, for my wife or family can be awkward
Don't charge for parking in Meltham!

Traffic along Huddersfield Road can be difficult to navigate especially when people park on double-yellow lines or access out of Bishops Way due to cars parking on the junction from staff at Greenacres
3Upkeep the alleyway leading up to Meltham C of E school and Durker Roods estate

It seems decisions are based on a minority of people who don't like their ideas to be challenged or questioned in any way, shape or form - such a shame as lots of residents have good ideas but a lack of "listening skills" from some members of the Town Council prevent these from being shared
42Lack of activities for young people and a lack of community events.

It seems that the Town Council are reluctant to change what is currently on offer and only willing to involve a minority of businesses and community groups - this is evident through the posts on Social Media
4
Meltham is unwelcoming to visitors compared to other similar towns - e.g. Slaithwaite, Marsden, Honley and Holmfirth.
252
Lack of opportunities unless you are in the Richard Noon Fan Club - this is how it comes across, if your views differ he is unwilling to accept discussion and instead becomes aggressive in his response - we are all equal residents in the town!
24Issues with anti-social behaviour around Durker Roods Hotel - we have seen an increase in people using the cut through from Clarke Lane to access this area.

Feel the derogatory comments towards other MPs/political parties from members of the Town Council is uncalled for and these views should be kept private or at least away from a public domain. Feel there is a lack of willingness to engage with the local community
2
Some areas of the town are well kept, however, delve behind some areas and these are very poor and unkempt - e.g. the alleyway between Clarke Lane and Meltham C of E school
1
I feel the Town Council fail to engage with the wider community and unless you are "known" by some members there is absolutely no point - we were promised a copy of the minutes from the meeting about Durker Roods by a member of the Town Council - this never happened, when I chased it up I got quite an arrogant and aggressive response. FYI - this has still never been received.
Anti-social behaviour
Promoting the local area
Recognising the good that lots of groups do - not just those who the Town Council are closest to
Increased transparency is needed from the Town Council
The Town Council need to consider the online behaviour of some councillors - placing derogatory comments to other political parties (who do good in the village) should not be made, especially with the intention of making local councillors look better, especially when they are independent councillors.

Because I care about Meltham and want it to be the best it can be.
5
Plenty of walking opportunities in the local area
Unfortunately a lot of the public footpaths are overgrown and look quite neglected. These need to be cut back and improved to a proper good standard. One in particular is a path between Tinker Lane and the bottom of Royd Edge, it's a disgrace.
5
Buses seem quite frequent which is good and there is the little bus going to Holmfirth and Slaithwaite, which seems well used.
Keep fares low
5
Good parking at the moment but don't want charges for local villages, as Kirklees is proposing.
5
Generally quite good but work needed to cut down overgrowing bushes etc.
7
Easy access to countryside
5
Better, now that Meltham Park has been imrpoved.
The park duck pond needs attention, that's a horrible dirty mess and needs urgently looking at.
5
Reasonable range of shops
Please, no more hairdressers, beauty salons and barbers in Meltham centre. Also, why on earth is a vaping shop opening in the former Nest premises. Going to be bad for kids hanging about and getting into bad habits. The Town Council should have stopped this.
54
Good mix of homes
Build more starter homes. All the recent building in Meltham seems to be larger 3 and 4 bed homes.
5
Could do with a nice Italian restaurant in Meltham, perfect for families to enjoy etc
5
Seems to be lots going on
54
Need attention to overgrown footpaths, general weeds on pavements etc. This is a result of budget cuts but makes some places look a mess.
4Need to improve general upkeep of area - footpaths, pavements etc
More improvements to Meltham park
Better range of shops - stop vaping shops, more barbers etc
Meltham Town Council could take on more responsibility for general upkeep of area.
The Council needs to better monitor which shops want to come into the area.

Speed bumps up slaithwaite road are a nightmare. They are slowly breaking our suspension
4
Clearer bus timetables and more regular buses
5
Traffic generally okay. Roundabouts by Morrisons cause a lot of confusion for drivers and can cause traffic. If the travellers rest is busy and people are parking down slaithwaite road, that can have a negative effect on traffic.
4
More community space around the rec
63

Service could be more regular. It seems some buses get full easily at busy times. Sometimes it would be better to have double deckers at busy times or more frequent buses at peak times
5

5A library service, food bank and good charities working in the village.
The referbed park is looking good.

6
Deacon close community centre, crossroads and the pubs/clubs in the village offer a selection of social groups and activities.
I am not sure, but if any of the groups require support in the future it would be good if they can get the support.
6
Meltham is a warm community which I feel apart of. Neighbours checking in with each other.

To be part of a community consultation.
5
For the able bodied paths etc.. are fine and plenty of routes to use, not a great amount of litter and generally well lit.
A lot of paths need work for the less able bodied to get around and there are a lot of overgrown areas too.
5
There is the 933 bus that tootles round the locality which is great for the pensioners etc..., buses in and out of town are regular during the day.
It seems after 6pm buses coming to Meltham only go on the hour from town, maybe two an hour would be better.
4
Currently it is great to have free carparking as this definitely benefits the local businesses, traffic itself is getting worse due but still manageable.
Don't charge for carparking and when there are road works have these done during the night, as the increased volume of traffic during the day due to new housing developments tends to clog the roads up more.
5
Most areas in the village are litter free and pleasant to walk around, signage could be better for the Robert Ashton Park from the village.
To clear the overgrown paths faster and keep them litter free.
6
Due to our location you are a stones throw from fantastic walks and a newly renovated park.
Dog fouling is still an issue.
5
We have three parks so plenty of space for this.
An addition of a cafe to the Robert Ashton park would work well.
5
Good community centre in the Carlile, fair choice of cafes and pubs, plus a supermarket close by and a few local shops to add to this.
Only two Indian restaurants, plus a pub that does pop up food, could do with a bistro type bar too.
4
Wed don't really have a focal point in the village for tourists, Slaithwaite has the canal, Holmfirth has the river (plus Last of the Summer Wine).
5
Very good community spirit, really friendly place to be around.
Lower cost on new houses to benefit the local children wanting to buy their first house. Anti-social behaviour on the Broadlands Rec needs to be sorted.
5
Plenty of community groups to be a part of and volunteer for.
Encourage younger people to get more involved for the continuity of these groups.
6
Strong community sense and a desirable place to live.
5
You very rarely see a police presence in the town - bobbies on the beat.
5
Issues are reported quickly
When reporting issues to Kirklees we need faster response times
5
Any reports by residents are discussed at council, where a workable solution is looked at.
Overgrown paths
More food variety
Paths in a poor state of repair for the disabled
Kirklees need to respond better
If another food outlet is a popular answer, then the council could publicise this, maybe then someone would have the confidence in making an investment

General feedback with regards to Meltham
4In general, the town is easy to get around.

Necessary roadworks and horses bring the town to a close.
The double roundabout at morrisons should be changed back to a give way (from the cobbles). I have been in so many near misses and witnessed many more.
5
I drive, can't comment
Same1
The Cobbles is a beautiful area, drowned by cars parking from as far as Chester (taxi markings are proof)
A bike gate urgently needs installed to the Meltham greenway at the cobbles to stop motorbikes
7
Beautiful natural scenery
Stop unnecessary parking clogging up the street. Children are playing, cars and delivery vans shoot up and down the street. Never mind the motorbikes.
7Scenery
Stop the area being used as a car park (the cobbles) and help it become a safer place for children to play. Dead end or access only signs are long overdue. The greenway should be used to walk, not for people to come and jam the street on both sides, making it difficult for residents to get in or out
7
Remove the cars parking all over the place
755554
Young gangs walking at night using the greenway to come and go
61
I have no say
Roundabout at morrisons should be changed back to a give way coming from the Dr.

Parking in streets to access areas of natural beauty is a nuisance and is creating unnecessary pot holes.

Constant traffic lights in the town area a joke.
My reasons are self explanatory

4Resurface roads.
Reduce height of Slaithwaite road speed bumps.
Too many vehicles on residential roads park blocking the entire pavements forcing pedestrians onto roads.

There is a lot of bad parking around village centre. Parking on double yellows or zig zags next to pedestrian crossing next to the Balti / Co-Op.
too much parking on pavements throughout residential areas forcing pedestrians onto the road.

Because Meltham looks a mess. Once you come down Station Street it untidy, shutters on windows advertising banners everywhere. .. certainly not looking like a well kept village.... fed up of it looking like a poor inner city location while other local villages appear to thrive.
4
Most places within walking distance
Better gritting of paths in the Winter.
1
Nothing to link to the larger towns or cities
Regular buses to town to link to trains / buses to other towns or places. Recently had to go to Bradford for 2 weeks. The train service was great. But the bus to get back to Meltham from Hudds was a joke. Buses missed on a daily basis, they were over packed. Sometimes had to wait for the next bus as too many people on the bus.
3
Free parking
Keep parking free. The traffic / parking on the Cobbles outside the pharmacy is ridiculous. There is double parking and no need for it. There is a big Morrisons car park and parking at the Dr surgery. Make sure people use it!!
Stop people parking on The Cobbles residential part of the street . Multiple people park there daily to use the Greenway..... please use the carparks in the village centre.
The multiple times temporary traffic lights are put up in the village is crazy... causing queues and disruption.
2Not been for some time but used to love the park. There are some lovely shops such as the florists. They look so pretty and this should be standard for a village / small
town.
Great access to walks / moors.
The history of the David Brown tractors/ museum.
I have to say the industrial estate at Meltham Mill is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and very well maintained.
Make every where look tidy. It's not hard. Make sure that there are no multiple advertising banners everywhere. ... they bring down the tone ( would you see these in the pretty villages of North Yorkshire?)
Make shops look nice. The shutters on windows Make it look unwelcoming and like an intercity. Station Street is a most depressing place and gives such a poor impression of the village.
Make Meltham an appealing place like other villages have done eg Slaithwaite, Marsden, Honley ( of course Holmfirth).
Would be nice if something could be done about Durker Roods Hotel
5I think there needs to be better access to public toilets.
Reducing flooding etc, extra care required where houses are built.
5
I don't really access this so can't answer fully.
The sports centre is showing its age. A good leisure centre / pool would be good
5Most churches try hard to organise activities and give a sense of community from what I can see.
The G&S society, am dram etc looks interesting too
College / post 16 education poor choice for courses if you need Level 1 or 2 courses .
22Nearly all the new houses being built are very expensive! There seems no plans for first time buyers within most of the new developments that are being built.

Rental properties seem to be few and far between.

As said previously more care required regarding building on land prone to flooding and the effect this has on the local environment.
43Scarecrow festival is good.
Beer festival good.
DB Tractors / history / museum
Things can feel clicky.
Most people consider Meltham to be a place you pass through or shop at Morrisons. People tell me how tatty it looks, nothing here to draw them in or visit. Not much ' special' about it. Run down buildings , houses and shops on the way to Morrisons. General poor reputation when compared to other local villages
3
Kids just hang around. Not enough Police seen out and about.
4
Roads prone to flooding on Hudds Road by new build houses. Fly tipping an issues up on moors
1
Concerns not listened to if they don't fall in line with local policy / thoughts
Make Meltham look like a well kept village ( centre and Station Street).
Encourage shops / businesses to take a pride in their appearance.
Develop a positive identity rather than a half hearted ' it'll do' attitude
Start simple. Get rid of advertising banners pinned to railing or fencing by Morrisons.
Encourage shops and businesses to tidy their shop fronts and stop using grids and shutters over windows ( not appealing and wouldn't be allowed in a well kept village)
Introduce / use of CCTV cameras to monitor any trouble etc that could occur.
Find a reason for people to visit / enjoy Meltham ( that isn't Morrisons).

Keep the free parking as charges will be detrimental to the business community and will inevitably lead to more on-street parking which is already a problem, especially pavement parking.
5744554541
Some pavements are overgrown with weeds, littering is a big problem and fly tipping is getting worse - especially on the rural roads such as Wessenden Head Road and Mill Bank Road.
4Littering
Fly Tipping
Parking
A dedicated street cleaner
The current street cleaner lorry is too large and is ineffective such as when it just drives round Bishops Way without making any impact on the street gutters - need a smaller one that can get around the small estate streets.
Blocked drains need attending to, as a pedestrian I have been soaked by cars driving through large puddles due to the drains not being clear.
Flytipping - it can take ages for a flytip incident to be resolved and in the meantime, people just add to the pile of rubbish.

4
The Victorian industrial heritage buildings interspersed by tree covered spaces & open fields.
Please don't build on public open land or green belt, fully utilise every plot of brown field sites & derelict buildings. Also address the scourge of graffiti which Is a blight everywhere in Kirklees. I find it most upsetting to see places such as the canal side buildings over 200 years old & even stone boundary walls to churches & grave yards defaced in such a manner, woeful & needs addressing (along with littering & fly tipping).
5
The landscape we have inherited.
Enforce & maintain the public footpaths / rights of way. Many are overgrown or deliberately obstructed by landowners. Swiftly remove graffiti, litter & fly tipping & try to trace & prosecute the perpetrators.
5
Again, maintaining to a high standard what we already have & possibly expanding it.
56
Many independent artisan traders & shops.
Maintain the character of the villages.
6
Good mix of property types.
4
Many cafes & pubs to visit.
I've noticed that many events are poorly advertised, I would attend & support more if I was aware of them.
6
For the most part, I think we have a vibrant community which I can dip in & out of as I wish. I have been truly surprised as to how friendly people in this area are.
3
Mostly feel safe both night & day.
As previously stated, graffiti is a huge problem second only to littering / fly tipping, all of these items are pernicious & lead to other problems, they must be dealt with as a matter of urgency.
3
Generally well maintained & pleasant areas.
Establish a graffiti / litter task force utilising people on community service orders or the huge untapped resource of illegal guests we are providing for perhaps?
2Very little.
I want a local council that focuses on local problems NOT a talking shop for national / international issues that we have no influence over. Please explain as to the relevance of our council, with all the problems they repeatedly tell us they have to deal with, taking a day to debate Gazza? Absolutely NOT acceptable, this is not what I pay my taxes for.
Graffiti, littering & fly tipping.
Again, utilise people on community service orders, unemployment benefits, illegal migrants awaiting asylum claims to provide a task force to deal with these problems. Surely, their service to the community would benefit them also?

Getting past the recycle centre queue on Bent Ley Road to get home or to go out is often an issue, particularly at weekends. The road is often very congested with the queue, and parked lorries. Proper queue management, or even moving the centre somewhere more suitable, is needed. The proposed changes to opening times may well mean longer queues and increased congestion.
4
I don't use it so can't comment
3
Parking in the centre is OK.
Traffic on Bent Ley Road is often not OK! The road isn't wide enough to accommodate it, and queuing sometimes spills onto Huddersfield Road

The situation on Bent Ley Road and the recycle centre needs to be addressed

2Very little No cycle lanes on major routed.
Very narrow pavements in parts of town centre, especially on Station street.
Far too many people parking cars on pavements, causing significant obstruction to pushchairs and wheelchairs
5
Good, regular, fair priced bys service to Huddersfield
Better bus service into Marsden
2Very littleToo many cars parked on pavement in many streets.
Centre of town often very congested with cars
3Good amount of public space at sports centre/field.
Greeneay nice but too short
Sports field often very full of litter - last week picked up countless wrappers, 4 or 5 cans and 2 beer bottles. Becoming unsafe to let dogs run or children play.
3
Greenaway nice but too short and so much litter at times. Paths along catchwater very good
Catch water paths can become too wet to walk on. Improving drainage somehow would help.
4
Good amount of space at recreation field
Persuade people to be more litter conscious
4
Access to doctors surgery very good.
Very poor range of shops and cafes. Needs some interesting cafes and eateries, similar to slaithwaite and marsden. Need to attract some more interesting busineeses

The town is so full of litter. Houses along Helme Lane very untidy gardens, really unattractive if that is first site of the town
4
Town generally very quiet at night and for the most part feels safe
Some parts very dark at night and poorly lit
3Not muchLitter everywhere. I moved from a small town where litter was very rare. The area near the Go Local shop on Helme Lane looks awful at times.
Regularly piles of rubbish along the pavement on Broadlands Rd.

4
I don’t generally use it
Earlier/more regular buses to slaithwaite/marsden/huddersfield/honley (I.e. places with train stations)
4
Again, there are pedestrian routes to most places that avoid the majority of exhaust fumes
Reduce exposure to exhaust fumes - make people turn their engines off when stationary
6

The buses are regular
More double deckers in the morning due to the volume of students going into Huddersfield. Very often full before reaching Netherton.
2
Free parking!
Charging to park will make on street parking worse than it is already.
5
Lovely open spaces and lots of walks. Lovely park and pleasure gardens.
Stop building houses. Develop brown sites instead, or all the lovely outdoor areas will be lost. A reduction of parking on main thoroughfares.....too much double parking and cars parked that obscure junctions, dangerous to car drivers and pedestrians alike.
6
The walks around reservoirs and woodland.
A few more bins particularly Deer Hill.
65
Support for services and amenities, cheaper rents to encourage and help businesses and services flourish and fill empty units.
4
Lots of groups for every age available and options to volunteer. Well supported sports teams.
More encouragement for local businesses to get started.
5
Less new builds, they tend to favour the more wealthy.
6555
A lot of fly tipping in remote areas. Ie rubble which can not be disposed of at the tip. It's a payable extra whether you are an irresponsible dumper or not.

Pedestrian crossings in village centre
People park on pavements at bottom of mill bank road, near convenience store. It makes it very hard to cross the road with a pram.
5
Lots of buses
More connections to Slaithwaite/Marsden for train station
4
Free car park in Meltham
Concerned about impact of having to pay for car parking if I was longer than 2 hours. It's hard to go to a group at the Carlisle, visit cafes and shops all within 2 hours.

It's very congested in Meltham

I think the speed should be 30mph instead of 40mph coming in/out of Meltham on Huddersfield road. It makes the road dangerous to cross, especially for those with a pram or mobility issues, and unpleasant to walk along for pedestrians trying to access the Greenway or elsewhere. It's also not nice for the houses at the edge of the village.

5
Clean and tidy in most of Meltham
I think more could be done to make Meltham look attractive and a nicer place to visit, such as planters, better signage to the Greenway, pleasure grounds or the park. A map of the village with points of interest or nice walks should be added on the board outside pink elephant.

7
Clean and tidy areas like the Greenway and Pleasure Grounds. Lovely countryside all around.
It's sometimes hard to know where to walk without looking up routes. A better website than currently exists promoting some of the beautiful walks would attract more people, similar to Holmfirth walk pages.
6
Fantastic playgrounds at Robert Ashton and Pleasure Grounds
Add a cafe at Robert Ashton and tidy up the pond to make it more of a day activity. Perhaps some information boards about wildlife or a little nature trail for children
4Lots of lovely groups on for all ages
Wish the library was bigger! But appreciate having it at all

Concerned over rumours of businesses moving into empty shops e.g. vaping shops etc. I really think Meltham could become more popular and more visited if careful thought was given to suitability of businesses and more was done to promote our lovely village
5
Doesn't feel like many opportunities to work but that's because there aren't many businesses
5
Good mix of housing
Social housing areas look very scruffy
6Wish there were more cafes. Gerry's is fantastic but so busy usually.

I don't feel like Meltham and its events are well publicised at all. A really good website is needed with information, walks, activities etc. to draw people in. Other than on Facebook, I rarely see events advertised anywhere other than the local cafe. Events for other towns and villages are advertised all of the place.
5
Some very lovely, welcoming people and a strong sense of community
As someone who has moved to Meltham, I feel it seems to have a reputation for industry and being a bit rough compared to other places. This seems very outdated to me, but I think it needs better publicity to show how good it is. We've got the pram district on our border but that's never mentioned etc. - other plays play on this.
75Concerned about increasing fly-tipping
7
I feel like it's easy to contact the town council and mayor
1. Speed limit on Huddersfield road should be 30
2. Better publicity needed to promote Meltham
3. Concerned about empty shops and what businesses will be allowed
1. Change speeds limit
2. Build a good website/get some maps or walks printed for local area
3. Promote empty shops and seek businesses that we'd like to have

4
Plenty of Public Rights of Way
Overgrown foliage, poor quality pavements, too much parking on pavements (especially around the schools). Volume of traffic is ridiculous - too many people running over the road by the church.
4
Stopped using it - over expensive, dirty and inconsistent on timing.
1Nothing
Far too much traffic coming through the village. Roadworks massively back up traffic. School time parking and driving is dangerous and inconsiderate (parking on pavements, in private drives, blocking drives). Crossings are barely used - people just run across the roads. Too many cars servicing the take aways in the centre causing disruption. On the weekends too many cars speeding through the village to get up to the Huntsman and race. It's getting worse year on year.
3
Great initiatives like the community centre are not looked after - litter, intimidating groups / gangs, drug/alcohol taking in public. Not enough done to support and promote the activities that are available.
5
The reason I moved here - public rights of way, generally understanding landowners who respect PROW.
Flytipping and litter is a real blight at Wessenden. Annual moorfires are devastating but not enough is being done to educate / punish those responsible.
4
Plenty of options
Again, litter and anti-social behaviour.
2
Post Office. Meltham Running Club.
GP is worse since Elmwood took over - pharmacy is a joke. Co-op is so expensive and Morrisons is poor standard. Library is a joke. Shops are just barbers and takeaways or charity shops - nothing to encourage interesting independents to come to Meltham like they do to Holmfirth, Honley or Slawit. There is no identity to Meltham.
2
Nothing to encourage local economy - poor / limited range of shops, no events of interest (one off events like Beer Festival and Meltham Memories are just embarrassing and noisy). Meltham keeps building houses and bringing people in - but we need to do something more to encourage community and have respect for the area. You can no longer rely on the fact that people have been here generations and have understanding and pride for the area. Don't let Meltham deteriorate like Huddersfield - look to Honley and Slawit for real community - we're never going to be tourist like Holmfirth (nor do we want to be). We pay parish premium on our council tax - spend it on MELTHAM.
4
Lots of new developments not bult in the style of the area.
2
See previous answers
1
Too many new developments - complete loss of identity, history and community
3
Not as safe as it once was, but not beyond repair. Invest and the community will come together, but think beyond the base 'beer/cars/fairground'. Reclaim areas - bring together at times like Christmas.
4
Regular street cleaning - no real graffiti problem
Fly tipping is an issue. Poor take aways and barbers bring down the standard.
2
Apart from this - what options are there? And I found this by accident. No presence from local councillors / politicians unless its voting time.
Invest before it's too late
Do things to bring standards/respect up and generate a state of community
Traffic and parking is a real rpoblem.
Organise regular events - communicate to the community
crack down on school / takeaway traffic
crack down on speeding / purposefully loud cars
Meltham community leaders need to show a presence and communicate vision
Don't leave it too late

The greenway
More accessible off road access, so people could get around without using the streets. Footpaths are quite limited in some areas
5
Pretty frequent bus service to Huddersfield & Holmfirth throughout the day
Buses running later to Holmfirth, they currently finish around tea time.
Make sure that when 2 or more company’s are providing buses, they don’t arrive at very similar times
3
Possible traffic lights/crossing at the centre. Better pavements & ability to cross at top of station street. Restricted parking up station street. No parking charges in car parks!
4
Meltham is surrounded by beautiful moors & landscape. Lots of public foot paths
Expansion of the greenway would provide a lovely walk off road for people. More footpaths to get you to where the countryside is. More signs so people would know where to go to see the beautiful countryside we have

To support the development of our beautiful village
4
Pavements kept free of weeds by residents thus keeping pavements passable.
Certain roads (Helme Lane) become congested by parked cars making it difficult to drive through and cross the road safely. Dog fouling is also an issue in certain areas of the village making the walk to schools problematic and unhygienic.
Traffic speed and volume on Birmingham Lane has also become a problem since the introduction of speed bumps on slaithwaite Road.
Pedestrian crossing would also be beneficial at top end of slaithwaite road (near top of Birmingham Lane). School children often have difficulty crossing this busy road.
4
Don't use public transportation
1
Car park in village centre must continue to be free to alleviate on road parking but limit time so traders/workers don't take up spaces all day
Double yellow lines needed on Helme Lane
7
Robert Ashton Park is maintained well and provides a lovely recreational space for all.
Lighting on Meltham Greenway
7
Close to Moorland walks.
Introduce dog fouling bins up by The Catch
6
Refer to my previous answer
6
Meltham has many public spaces offering space for groups to meet.
Entice more local traders by ensuring rents are affordable, parking for visitors is available. The shops in Meltham seem similar in nature; barbers, beauticians. A greengrocers, hardware shop and wine bar would add to the offer for both visitors and residents.
46
My street (Kistvaen Gardens)is attractive and well maintained by residents. We have a group Whatsapp where people ask for help, guidance and support which is always forthcoming. In winter we clear our street of ice and snow but sadly no grit bin is available now.
Reintroduce a grit bin for Kistvaen Gardens. The street is open to the Moorlands and ice is often a problem due to wind chill.
44
I work in Marsden and Meltham should learn from the community spirit there.
4
Some areas feel safe. Others less so
Meltham Rec attracts teenage gangs. I've heard of knives bring hidden in the Rev overnight. I wouldn't venture there on my own after dark and would be reluctant to go with young children at all.
4
Meltham tip offers a good service for waste removal but only suitable for those with vehicles.
Local, low cost waste disposal for items not suitable for general waste would reduce fly tipping and the disposal of waste in gardens

5

6
Meltham is surrounded by moorland and green spaces

Traffic calming measures and local public footpaths.
Remove traffic crossings that aren’t actually used - people tend to cross close to,the crossings whilst not actually using them. More dog waste bins on footpaths. More traffic calming or discouragement of use of cars. Bicycle lanes.
5
Bus routes and frequency to huddersfield.
More reliable and higher capacity connections to Leeds and Manchester from huddersfield. Better public transport between meltham and Holmfirth.
6
I walk most places in the village.
Enforce parking controls where people park dangerously whilst collecting takeaways or going to local shops.
7
Well looked after and utilised. Plenty of community activities.
6
Easy and local access to moorland and pathways.
Some dangerous parking at wessenden head reservoir.
6
Recent developments of play areas. Community groups looking after greenway and pleasure grounds.
62
Limited opportunities to support the local, economy with variety of shopping opportunities. Ok for foodstuffs and grocery but nothing else really appeals. Missing a family restaurant or leisure venue. It’s a shame that recent attempts to launch gift shops and an iron mongers have failed. Too many charity shops.
6666
More visible policing or local constable relationships. Day to day Policing other than Speed cameras is virtually non-existent.
66Take knobheads off Facebook groups!
Better shopping opportunities beyond food, charity and groceries.
Less traffic.
Subsidies for new retail stores.

Lots of footpaths
Some of the footpaths are very uneven. Some footpaths aren't lit and there needs to be more seating.
2
324 bus to Huddersfield 335 from Slawit to Holmfirth.
The 324 is never on time.
2
New houses have more parking spaces
Lots of double parking, I live on a dead end and it can be hard to get a car in and out sometimes
5
The streets are mostly well lit at night. Lots of large open spaces for activities in newer areas and the new houses look nice.
There's only one public toilet, in Robert Ashton memorial park. There needs to be more public toilets. Some vacant plots of land in residential areas could be turned into community space (like playgrounds or community gardens), there's a plot on the edge of Moorland rise and Hanson road that's like this.
6
Lots of trees and greenery near houses.
Dog poo is a problem at the waterfall near Owler Bars Road, and parts of the path going down the river are quite muddy. Some areas around Meltham also don't have many trees in.
5
There are at least three play areas around Meltham so they are easy to get to. Equipment is good.
Maybe there should be a few more play areas so people don't have to go to a different neighborhood if they don't want to. Also some neighborhoods are a bit sketchy.
5
There's a sports centre, so that's good. Three primary schools are in the area and Honley high school has a bus service to Meltham.
There needs to be more facilities since the sports centre is quite far away if you live over the other side of Meltham. Some shops on the main road are shut.
6
Lots of places for shopping and eating. The Travellers Rest has some accommodation for short stays, with rooms with good views on the landscape.
Shops shut on the main road often. All the shops and eating places are mostly around the main road and Bent Let, so it can be quite far to walk for anyone who lives far away from these areas. Maybe there should be a Youth Hostel or something so more people come to the area for longer.
6
New houses appear to be large and have more community space and more open spaces.
Already existing spaces are not up to date, roads are uneven and paths are small in places.
3
Good spaces already exist and there are lots of trails around the area. The Travellers and The Fourth fiend are very social places, as are any of the parks, so this is ok.
There's not really much to do in Meltham, it's either shopping or going to the park, there needs to be more activities in Meltham. More opportunities and more playgrounds and park space could help people to be more sociable with eachother.
6
Meltham is very community driven. The council is independent and volunteer groups look after our public and open spaces. People are friendly and nice.
There aren't really any community events. Slawit has Moonraking and Holmfirth has a couple of events including an art week, though Meltham has the retro fair and scarecrow festival, they aren't as attractive as these so there should be more events to get people to visit. Meltham doesn't really have a good reputation because of the Council estate at Broadlands and Sunny Heys, so if it's looked after better these areas will have a better reputation for themselves and Meltham as a whole.
5
Spaces are well lit at night and there are good routes in most areas that avoid roads.
Broadlands and Sunny Heys aren't safe to go at night. These areas need to be looked after more.
4
The centre of Meltham is well looked after. Parks and playgrounds are well kept and community spaces are kept well. The Carlisle Institute has lots of events on and the building is well kept.
Meltham is looked after well but some areas are looked after better than others, such as older neighbourhoods being overlooked by newer ones. The paving on the paths in the centre is a a bit wonky in areas.
7
Meltham is community driven so I think residents are listened to well. Our community spaces are well kept and there isn't much litter.
I think the main issues in the area are with parking, access, and neighborhood interaction
Making existing spaces more accessible and putting on more community events

Community projects. Regular coffee mornings for various charities. Great dog walking areas, woods, reservoirs & the lovely greenway.
Bus service. So many complain about late or missed bus's. More clearer one way signs. Too many people drive the wrong way round Greens End road. Less hair salons/barbers, there are more than 10 already. Pavement parking, especially around all 3 schools.
5Pretty frequent bus timetable. Plenty bus stops.
A good local bus service, that is great for our community.
As I said in Q1. Ensure bus's run on time & actually turn up.
5
A couple of charging points for cars in Morrisons car park. Free car parks (but we all know that's about to change). There is a perfectly good bus turning circle. It could be put to good use & cars won't be backed up along Huddersfield road & down Station street behind the bus.
So much new housing has created loads more traffic. Pavement parking is an issue, even where houses have driveways. Matthew Lane can be really dangerous. Not enough electric charging points around the area. Only 2 crossings in the village. Helme Lane could probably benefit from one.

4
Plenty of buses into town, good parking and the zebra crossing upgrade is working well.
The increase in traffic due to the recent increase in population is evident. A better flow of traffic would be useful and much needed, the market square junction is a nightmare at peak periods. The speed bumps on Slaithwaite Road, are for too high, I shouldn’t need to slow to 10mph to navigate them, they need lowering.
6
The rare times I use a bus, they are plenty full and on time.
An occasional bus over to the Colne Valley or at least that covers the top of Deer Hill would be great.
2

I’m concerned about the parking charges that will be introduced. Although it doesn’t affect me, I feel it will affect local business and commuters into surrounding areas, such as Huddersfield. In addition a reliable bus service from Marsden, specifically the train station would be good.
7
Public spaces in Meltham are accessible and there are so many activities and events going on.
7
There are some lovely natural spaces and a lot of events are accessible and interesting.
6
This question is not necessarily applicable to me.
5Services are good, the co-op open until
10pm is welcome and Morrisons is well stocked.
5
Since living in Meltham, I have been able to volunteers in a number of roles. My paid employment is mainly home based.

Thick holling drive and mill bank road trees growing round street lights making them dark to walk in winter. Also the paths are overgrown on both.
4
First 324 is unreliable
4School crossing lady at carmlands road stops traffic and waits.for people no where near ready to cross.
The lady from the riding stables at far bank near healy House bends, I'm sure she takes her horses out at peak rush hour to cause chaos, causing traffic issues through the village.
5
Plenty of green spaces,
More allotments.

Library and post office are great
Drs appointments have been difficult due to number of patients to dr ratio.
44
More expensive housing is being built.

Trees around street lights could be cut back. Overgrown vegetation cut back from paths. Weeds cleared from paths. Street cleaner visiting more areas. They seem to focus on same area.

Because I would like to see improvements in the local area.
2More places to park car in village area, not outside someone’s house.
Access over Station street to greens end road.

42Needs more car parking area.

On foot, Crossing Station Street from Meltham Road to Green End Road I’d dangerous.
Turning right onto Station Street from Meltham Road in the car is dangerous. As traffic grows I feel we need traffic lights at peak times.
4Fly tipping needs to be reduced in the area.
Public toilets.
7
The reason why I moved here 12 years ago.
4
Good for young children
Not much to do for teens
4We could do with an independent fruit and veg shop.
I see great shops opening up and then closing.
Why can’t Meltham be thriving like Holmfirth and Slaithwaite?
1
I can’t say I have seen anything about this at all. I don’t see local jobs advertised or see volunteering jobs.
41I moved here 12 years ago and felt very isolated. I don’t see good community spirit unless you have lived in Meltham a long time and have connections. Meltham is very inclusive.
I have found the Holmfirth community more welcoming.
Social groups, daytime activities.
Groups for carers. Parents with disabled children. Groups or activities that welcome children with disabilities which are non judgmental.

I don’t feel part of the community.

To support and better Meltham
5
I think Meltham is a very accessible village on foot, although I can’t comment on how it is for people with disabilities. I believe there is many routes you can take such as public footpaths or pavements.
Could make the steps up from Morrisons to mean lane more safer. These have been dangerous for years as well as being very dark.
5
We have a regular bus to town.
Buses to other places not just town should be encouraged and not reduced. The 324 is unreliable the majority of the time and has been for years I do believe this to be due to external factors such as traffic tho.
6
It is free and convenient to park in the centre of Meltham
The congestion through the centre at the junction is nearly always a nightmare. No one seems to understand how the two roundabouts in the village work. The speed bumps up slathwaite road are enormous and so are the potholes around the village.
4
Illegal parking seems to be an issue in the village. So does litter in public spaces.
5
Meltham is surrounded by the beautiful moorlands.
Could provide bins around common footfall walking flutes so litter isn’t an issue hopefully this could also reduce the amount of dog fooling left on the ground.
4
Is plenty of parks for younger kids or a kick around with a ball.
There is nothing for teenage kids to do. When I was a teenager we had a youth club that was always busy. However this was short lived and shut down - which I believe added to the antisocial behaviour teenagers seem to carry out in the village due to boredom. There is also a serve lack of public toilets in the village
4
The car parking and road leading to Morrisons is a mess. There is no clubs / activities for teenagers. Schools overcrowded so children are having to go outside of the village. Doctors and dentist seem to be too full as well. With all the new housing developments within the village it would make sense to provide more essential services.
3
I believe Meltham could have potential to provide a lively atmosphere like near by marsden or slawitwaite. We are mainly consumed by hair salons, barbers shops and takeaways with not much else. I think we need to invest in the village to make it more attractive for visitors.
3
Housing in Meltham is almost unaffordable for young people. I myself am of the age of moving out of my parental home and would have loved to stay within Meltham where my family live. However, it is not possible due to demand, pricing and lack of properties to rent.
4
I believe there is a lot of activities for the elderly as well as having multiple different church denominations for worship. The events we have such as the Meltham memories weekend is always busy
Again nothing for teenagers.
Could provide and improve events such as the Meltham memories weekend as this years was very disappointing as seems to be downscaling each year.
44
The vic pub nearly always has fights breaking out and frequent drug use within it. Teenagers are bored so take up antisocial behaviour as a pastime and have done for years. Although it seems more teenagers are staying in side nowadays. “Melthamers” are not always welcoming to “outsiders” and can often be racist. Durkerroods hotel has so much potential but is left in waste.
4
Fly tipping around the village is frequent. The state of the roads surrounding Meltham are horrific in places. Drainage are always blocked.
4
Improving the footfall in Meltham and people spending. Improving facilities for teenagers. And repairing the roads

2 PRIORITY Clear the nettles from the pushchair/bike path down towards Morrisons from Huddersfield road - it is often inaccessible with a pushchair because the nettles are so large and overgrown
4
We have a bus service
Remove bus stops from centre of village (by chemists and butchers), make them use the bus station instead. What is the point of having a bus station/turnaround and letting them block the main Huddersfield road? It’s dangerous for pedestrians and causes traffic jams.
5
Car parks are free to use
Keep car parks free to use

Sort out the speed bumps on Slaithwaite road - some of them are far too vicious, the angles are wrong
7
Lots of green space and parks
Put lots more benches around village
Make Durker Roods hotel safe somehow (I know this is probably impossible but is there some way of doing compulsory purchase so that it could be repurposed for housing?)
7
Easy access to green space
Put more benches in places where walkers and cyclists pass so that they can enjoy our village and great views
7
New play equipment in parks
Run some activities in the parks in the holidays for kids eg Forest School
74Better range of shops
We seem to be overrun by hairdressers and beauty salons
5
Build more affordable housing instead of massive houses
6
Seems to be a lot of stuff happening in the village for a wide range of people
Use some of the green space to run forest bathing/ forest school type activities like the ones being run on Wednesdays in the community garden at New Mill
7
Meltham is a welcoming place.
6I generally feel safe everywhere in Meltham.
I don’t feel safe when I come across youths/children hanging round the derelict Durker Roods hotel, it makes me worry for their safety and mine.
Sort out Durker Roods hotel, get it forcibly sold, build some houses on the site.
5There used to be someone employed by the town council to sort out grot spots - does that still happen?
It was a brilliant initiative
5Sort path down to Morrisons from Huddersfield road
Sort Durker Roods hotel
Provide some forest bathing/forest craft/forest school activities

Greenway, walking areas
3
Fine if you're in the village, we're Meltham Mills and it's a good walk to the main road to catch a bus into town.
Not sure because it's the bus companies
5
Availability of parking around the village. Reduced speeds around school is good.
May be worse with parking charges coming in and more street parking.
7
I love the village and community, I'm involved inthe school and library as a volunteer.
Try and attract more businesses to the village to fill the vacan shops. Will be interesting to see how the new sweet shop does. It's a shame the footfall wasn't there to help Nest stay open.
7
Parks are great for taking our grandchildren to. Walks are good around the village getting to different scenic areas.
Litter bins
7
The parks, the wreck and community centre.
There is a reliance on use of social media to promote things going on within the village. Not sure how this could be widened, word of mouth is pretty good but if you are alone and not mixing, it must be hard to know what's going on.
4
Plenty of services - schools, clubs - football, scouts etc but not sure what there is for pre teens and teens.
More for young people, teens walking round the village.
4
Plenty of opportunities for volunteering but this could be publicised more. There are loads of companies at Meltham Mills that many people are not aware of. The Crossroads Centre offers guidance for various things. Very good links with Morrisons.
Not sure, attracting different retail outlets. Meltham to many people is a passing through village or folk live here and don't get involved in community.
4
Different areas in the village are well maintained. Various community activities going on throughout the year to bring people together
Walking around at the weekend we came across houses off Helm Lane that we didn't know were there. Little affordability housing for those starting out.
6
Community events - a lot of the halls in the village are used by various groups
More info in public places on what is available. There is so much going on and I don't think it is publicised enough.
7
Community - volunteering, various groups to cover different ages, interests
5
The village and surrounding areas are well lit and I feel neighbours watch out for one another
Meltham in the Know can be good for reaching out and informing what's going on but can also be very negative. Durker Roods is an ongoing issue that will hopefully be resolved
5
On the whole the area is clean and well looked after
More bins for litter but know that people will drop litter even if there is a bin there
5
Doing this survey and the work the parish council do as well as volunteers
Over reliance on social media may be an issue for those who don't use it.
Publicising what our great village has to offer
Encouraging more people to get involved - publicising volunteer opportunities
Look at how publicity is shared

Greenway is well maintained, but that's by volunteers
The ginnel linking the Durker Roods estate to Clarke Lane, and used by children going to Meltham C if E is poorly maintained. The area behind Morrisons, including the steps up towards Station Road is disgusting.
4
Don't use it, but I understand the buses are often cancelled last minute or rarely run on time
Doesn't matter, I'd only use it as a last resort
1
Absolutely nothing
Particularly suffer at drop off/collection times, as parents/grandparents are both lazy and selfish and park on pavements, across drives and generally think of no-one but themselves.
The road safety measures introduced in Meltham are excessive and unwarranted eg Slaithwaite Road
3
Robert Ashton Park has been a wasted opportunity, and councillors involved have not taken justifiable criticism well. Should have got public feedback before ploughing ahead with the "improvements"
7
We are blessed with where we live
4
Playground at the Pleasure Grounds was well thought out
As mentioned previously, Robert Ashton Park has been a missed opportunity
2
Due to ongoing housing development Meltham is poorly equipped moving forwards. OK if you want you hair doing, or a charity shop, but the place dies after lunchtime on a Saturday, unlike other similar sized places nearby eg Slaithwaite, Uppermill etc
444
The Scout Group is growing at a phenomenal rate as they are fortunate to have a fantastic group of leaders
32
Community effort to force the sale of Durker Roods hotel to prevent further deterioration of the building, so there is a greater chance it will return to being a focal point for the village, rather than an eyesore.
3Fly tipping is an increasing problem, but that blights society as a whole.
Better cross management of change by all parties involved eg pedestrian crossing outside the Co-op
1One person within Meltham Town Council needs to remember that it is not just about him, and the remaining councillors/officials need to stop being so spineless.
There is currently no obvious consultation with community in relation to events held in recent times, to the point that they are not worth attending eg beer festival being held in a primary school - wrong message, or Meltham Memories, which has become meaningless now
MTC listening to the community more
MTC making more of an effort to maintain what we have
MTC being more transparent - Eg Project 142

4I feel we could keep our footpaths clear of rubbish and folage so it easier and safer so we can enjoy our green space and our village.
I feel we need the drains cleaning more often to prevent flooding and causing damage
6We have a good affordable bus route into Huddersfield.
Stotts run reliable buses to Holmfirth and Slaithwaite
5
We have good parking at the moment
I think when they bring parking charges I to the large car park we are going to see more on street parking which may need to be monitored as people like to park on pavements making this a hazard
45
The Robert Ashton park is a nice green space but could do with the paths around duck pond and down to Meltham mills maintaining alittle better feels dark with the overhanging trees and this can make you feel uneasy walking through
4
I wish this was more enclosed as children with special needs have full opportunity to run off and maybe straight onto Huddersfield Road I appreciate that it is giving freedom of exploring but for parents with SEN children can find it hard and feel unable to use the facilities
5444554I feel we could keep our footpaths more accessible by keeping the clear of rubbish/foliage which then encourages us to go out and enjoy our green spaces and keeps our village looking clean and tidy.
The drains need cleaning out more often to prevent flooding and causing damage to surrounding areas

General interest in all activities which affect the population of all ages
5
Most footpaths are kept in good condition and in the main well lit
3
Lack of access to local buses is an issue particularly in the Thick Hollins area. Theirs is a long walk to either the village or Meltham Mills to catch a bus. With the introduction of car parking charges in the village leaves us more isolated
3
Free car parking
Scrap parking charges by challenging Kirklees
6
Plenty of open spaces for walking exploring and playing. 2 excellent play parks in the Meltham Mills area. Green open spaces for football and other team activities throughout the town. Well preserved town hall and Carlisle Institute
7
Living next to the golf course and easy access to Marsden Moor makes it bury accessible and enjoyable
7
Couldn’t be better with the easy accessible play parks and recreation grounds including the sports facilities throughout the town
4
In general well met. But without serviceable transport makes it difficult.
Needs awareness raising for social activities within the town. Lack of dementia and other social activities for people who have special needs. Insufficient social care
3645
Whichever approach it’s taken to the town of Meltham is appealing and attractive with a feeling of large open rural spaces
566
I feel we have an active and influential parochial town council. Were listened to and action is taken. There’s often open meetings where we can opely listen and be listened too.

I have lived here for twenty years and feel very positive about the place, the people and the community of Meltham.
6
Frequency of public transport, availability of taxis easy access to major routes.
More enforcement of parking regulations by those who choose to park on pavements and block roads.
7
Frequent and within easy access.
5
Free car park! Generally traffic moves freely. Speed bumps have Improved Slathwaite Road. Pedestrian lights have made Huddersfield Road safer.
I know shops need people to be able to park but sometimes parking immediately outside causes problems.
6
Real efforts to improve village centre, the park, Greenway and the Pleasure Grounds.
Still some areas, steps opposite the Dentists need care and attention. Recognise some in private ownership also need renovating.
7
Easy access to a variety of spaces for all areas and abilities.
A commitment by more people to caring for them and treating them as stewards not owners.
67
We are fortunate in the village to have a good range of services available to us.
667
Many activities for us in which we participate.
76
I always feel safe here. Perhaps sometimes not everyone shares the same sense of appropriate behaviour when out but that is what living in a community entails.
76Renovation of some of the dilapidated areas near the village centre.
Reaching out to groups who don’t participate.
Facilities for young people to thrive and become involved.

6Good network of roads for getting places (hybrid car)
Decent bus service.
Nice walks
Ensure people always have their dogs on a lead on public footpaths! I don't walk on some because there is always someone who cannot control their dog(s) and it/ they are not on a lead.
6
Regular bus service in several directions.
More buses into the Colne Valley e.g. Slaithwaite
4
Free parking in the village
Take ownership of the car parks - the proposed charges are not fair on the local businesses. Not all business owners live in Meltham or they have something heavy to transport. The exorbitant charges being suggested for a full day will push people to park on the roads.
5
The street cleaner does a fantastic job, keeping the place looking good. 20mph throughout the village is good.
Unfortunately house owners don't remove weeds from growing on the pavements outside their own homes, it is not easy walking up parts of Millmoor road where tall 'flowers' have been allowed to grow on the pavement.
Need 20mph painting on the tarmac in places, many drivers don't stick to the speed limit.
Stop people parking on the pavements, not easy for walkers or disabled people or prams etc.,
6
Easy access to the moors and other lovely walks.
Put a ban on anyone walking their dog that is not on a lead. The other week two dogs jumped up at me and scratched my legs (wearing shorts), the owner's excuse ... 'they*re only puppies,* This happens on a regular occasion.
5
There a several parks and playgrounds that look reasonable.
Educate people to put their rubbish in a bin!
Bring back road safety lessons to children, they have no idea how dangerous road / drivers are.
6
Doctors, dentist, etc.,
5
Plenty of opportunity to volunteer at the charity shops and churches.
6
Good range of easy affordable homes as well as more expensive.
Build more cheaper homes for young families. Builders are just interested in large houses with large profits.
5555
Don't go out on foot in the dark, some dark corners.
2
Questions are asked
The questions are too loaded. Kirklees Council wastes money and don't listen. We have asked for the tip hours not to be cut - to no avail. The Councillors have no power unless they are on the cabinet. Cut the number of Councillors and save money.
Fly tipping is a major problem

Pelican crossing is a vast improvement on the zebra crossing outside the Co-op and the one outside Pink elephant is also beneficial.
Still some problems with people parking outside the Co-op/Balti and the Post Office. Would love someone to ban the ridiculously noisy exhausts on cars! I know you can't do this!
7
We regularly enjoy walks in the lovely countryside. The 'circuit' of the Pleasure Grounds and the Greenway is great for a paved walk. The work done at Robert Ashton park has improved that space.
I'm aware of the ongoing challenges/negotiations around Durker Roods hotel and it would be great if progress could be made with that building.
7
See previous question plus the volunteers who maintain some of our natural spaces are to be commended.
Another challenge is the pond in Robert Ashton Park but I know people have tried to resolve that many times before.
7Robert Ashton Park, the Pleasure Grounds and the Broadlands park offer a variety of play and recreational activities. 'Picnic in the Park' is a great community event.
7
There are so many groups and clubs in Meltham which support individuals and encourage people to join together. The Crossroads Centre and shop help people who may be struggling financially and the Centre hosts other advice sessions. The links between the churches and the wider community are strengthening and are supported by the Town Council.
6
Great that shops don't stay empty for long.
7
Great community spirit.
7
There is lots to do in Meltham, including smaller groups and wider community events. The Meltham directory is available online and as a physical copy. People seem to recognise the the Crossroads Centre is a good place to find things out. Volunteering brings benefits to the groups and the volunteer.
Not sure what could be done, but there are probably younger adults struggling with loneliness who may not be able to find a group for them.
7
Feel like I'm repeating myself! There is a lot to be involved in if you wish to. I like the fact that I know so many people in Meltham and don't want to live anywhere else.
777The Town Council takes on board people's views. As some of them are active in other groups in the community they are aware of many of the needs.
I am involved in the church and some community groups which means I feel a part of the life of the town.

Meltham can be a busy village. Having speeding measures throughout the village would help.
6
Meltham has alot of history. Investing in the town centre around shop front, planting and the general condition of these buildings would bring in more visitors and business.
66
Generally the public areas can look tired. Little things like surrounding walls, fencing etc not being maintained can allow the wider improvements/works be overlooked.
66766In think more could be done to
Promote the heritage of Meltham. Some of the celebrations around the town centre which is difficult with traffic. An example of a good community celebration is party in the park. The xmas light switch on with traffic appears dangerous in part.
6
I moved to the area approx 3 year ago. Meltham feels very safe from the area of Tameside I moved from
5
I feel more investment could be put into the general appearance of Meltham, removing those taxi signs!! More infrastructure street furniture, lighting, flowers ect

CCTV in Meltham centre at the main junction. Lots of bad driving at this junction endangers pedestrians and cyclists.
4
Buses into Huddersfield are regular.
Buses to Marsden where train connections to main cities non existent.
4
Free parking
Not enough free parking spaces and threat of charging.
5
Some nice buildings.
The church and surrounding areas often have green mold and really need a good clean.
766
Good doctors facility.
55
No need to build more houses, Meltham getting bigger and busier is not what locals need or want.
553
The pubs are still all open and used by the locals, we do not have derelict pubs like many other towns and villages.
Keep the streets safer via CCTV and police presence. I feel less safe as each year goes by as I see many of the shops now run by out of town people that seems to have little customer foot fall, but lots of employees that make me think something untoward is going on, and that feeling has been the downfall for many similar towns.
5
Public buildings need cleaning and the safety railings at pelican crossing are being used to advertise all sorts.
5
I’m not sure as only living here 3 years
Make town safer via cctv
Police to check regularly the unusual activities in some of the shops where there is little activity, is it a front for something else ?
Old sone work should be sand blasted or jet washed more regularly.
If no action is taken for 10 years in regards security and policing, the town will become no go zone with bad reputation and locals will move elsewhere and this survey will have been pointless.

I want to see Meltham continue to develop as a community that meets the differing needs of those who live here
6
For me there is no issue in getting around Meltham as I’m mobile without needing any additional support. There is definitely so much more traffic. My experience is that the footpaths are good
I’m not sure of the extent to which the traffic calming on Slaithwaite Rd has brought about change. People drive through the gaps separating the two pads. I’m personally very heavily impacted by the noise arising from the speed pad next to our house. Whilst I accept there was consultation, I would never have realised how much traffic noise is generated by trailers and open backed trucks with loose items in them. It is staggeringly intrusive and I’m not sure the extent to which the speed bump actually slows down the traffic. Whilst it was true that the traffic was coming down Slaithwaite Road at speed, the mason area was as it came down to the Travellers Reast area. I would like to see the number of traffic bumps reduced and a proper consultation with residents about the impact of the scheme to see if it needs modification.

Too many buses are cancelled. Bus passes aren’t usable before 9.30?
There is still parking in the village and whi;st charging may have come in, it’s not as onerous as it might have been
I’ve commented on the traffic calming on Slaithwaite Rd which frankly was overkill. I don’t think there’s much we can do much about the sheer amount of cross-Meltham traffic. It’s not the speed of traffic on Slaithwaite Rd - it’s the volume, which then impacts on the T Junction in the centre of the village. Sometimes the wait seems interminable, turning across the traffic down towards Morrisons. Crossing from Greens End Rd often requires a kind driver to stop. But I recognise that traffic lights probably don’t fit the criteria
We should take pride in the fact that the public buildings are fully in use. The imaginative transformation of the Carlile Institute and the use by the Crossroads Project of the Old Town Hall should be praised. From all the criticism of the Park, anyone who came to Picnic in the Park would have seen a community rejoicing in well maintained open space where children and grandchildren could safely play. Given the likely cuts in KMC services we should be proud of it - and keep constantly investing in it. I vcan’t think of a similar large space in such good condition in any of the surrounding towns and villages. The Pleasuregrounds are a delight and a testomony to local volunteers. The graveyards are being maintained by a team from both the local churches and villagers. The bells in the church ring! Broadlands Rec has a relatively new play area - there’s a problem with littter but the imaginative developments of the Sports Centre, and the Skate Ramp are a testimony to the imagination and commitment of local residents as is the little play area at Sunny Heys. The Greenway is so well used and maintained Folly Dolly tho privately owned - which must cause the owners to despair at times - can be spectacular
I’d like to see the Greenway extension towards Netherton be a priority accepting there may be problems with owners and cost. It’s amazing to see how many use the existing Greenway. It would be great to see it go further. I would like to know who owns the woodland at the bottom of Sefton Lane and see what more could be done particularly with the swamp by the bridge + another warning that vehicles can’t cross! I would still like to see the vision of the pathway by the beck realised. I feel that despite the Sports Centre and the new play area, the Broadlands/Copley side of Meltham continues to need investment. KMC own garage land opposite Copley Estate - could this be used for a Play Area?
5
The Park, the Pleasuregrounds, the Sports Centre and play facility next door, the Greenway, Sunny Heys Play area, the wood at Sefton Lane, access to the Catch and the Moors
Broadlands pitches need upgrading. See my previous comments regarding the Greenway and investing in land near Copley. Continual upgrading of the Park - with increases if necessary in the Precept to fund this. I believe with all the new people moving into Meltham there is increased demand for good quality facilities and space. I recognise there were issues with the recent work but that should not deter further work and improvements
5
See previous comments. I commend the imaginative way the Carlile is used for plays/comedy/Art Week/
Check what if any KMC owns in the Town - can it be asset transferred and used? Continue working with the Sports Clubs to improve Broadlands and with churches and local businesses to build on Picnic in the Park. What discussions take place with the Churches/Crossroads and the Town Council and local residents about what rental space is available and how best can this use be coordinated
5
We’re fortunate to have the re-cycling centre still available and this must be fought for! To have the Library/Post Office and the space for rental in the Carlile is a plus. The Crossroads Project is unique in the area and should be celebrated - cheap shop/debt and legal advice/large numbers of community users/food bank. Guides/scouts/Brownies. The Town Council having funds imagination and the ability to work for good. There are so many community groups and a great interface with the local church. Plus excellent local pubs
Social Care is an issue - can anything be set up with volunteers to address the lack of respite care. To what extent can organisations work together to address loneliness - Meltham probably has a significant number, not just of older people - but also younger people working from home - who are lonely. This survey should be started with the local churches to discuss how issues can be addressed together
The businesses that are based at Towndoor or Carlile
I’m not qualified to comment
5
Reasonable mix of housing - what makes Meltham is the access to the countryside
Shortage of reasonably priced rental property and the cost of new housing is getting and second-hand housing is rising. I understand that Meltham’s met its target for housing in the current plan
5
There is a good sense of community which draws people to Meltham. Meltham Keep us in the Know Facebook site can help. The schools share information. The Churches have their own Facebook pages. There are community groups at Crossroads and across the Town plus walking groups, dance, the Community Choir and Singing for Health./ The Waggon and Horses is the Community pub and 4th Fiend has developed it’s own community. Gerry’s Coffee is popular plus the Scouts etc. The churches are alive growing and committed to community involvement
May be there is a divide between those who have lived in Meltham for a while and those who have moved here. Probably also a lack of leaders - people like the events/activities but will they commit to lead? How can that be addressed. Loneliness will be an issue. I think there should be a summit bringing together the Schools/GPs/ Police/ Church and Councillors plus residents to discuss what they perceive the needs are and how they can be met. We have significant pockets of deprivation. Could more be done to help struggling parents/families to keep Social Services at bay and promote safe parenting? Crossroads now provides one of the very few remaining free debt/benefits and legal advice clinics. How do we make this centre even better known?
6
See previous answer as evidence. It seems people believe that Meltham has a stronger community identity than surrounding towns/villages
See previous answers. It remains however predominantly a white British township though this is changing - St James Church has a number of families with African heritage and celebrated with an African meal. And Meltham does have the Africa Fabric Shop! I’m sure there must be Ukrainian families here. Could more be done to find out how we harness the resources the BME community can add to Meltham.
5
By and large I feel safe
I refer to my previous answer about the need for a summit - what do the heads of our three schools and Honley High think about whether their students feel safe? What do the Police see as issues in the town - what’s our level of crime and suspected drug use?
5
I still think that it’s reasonably well maintained in part because the Town Council and the voluntary groups working on the Greenway and Pleasuregrounds together with the Churches are very proactive. I’m concerned about the impact that austerity will have on KMC’s duties. It is good that we have a Town Council with funds
The challenge will be austerity decisions of KMC impacting on the maintenance of roads and its other duties. The Town Council needs to fearlesssly increase the precept so that funds are available to fill the gaps the Council leaves and with Crossroads to support local initiatives
The Town Council and the odd good Councillor.
I sense apathy. Some Forum to listen to what local businesses large and small have to say - we now have Cafe Direct based here plus Neal Brothers and the whole of the Towndoor businesses. It was great that heads of local schools contacted Crossroads Foodbank about the needs of specific families at Christmas and the emergency food parcels were available over Summer Holidays. I suspect the heads/GPs/Police know more. How do we listen? How do we respond? There are good local groups - how do we work together

Plenty of footpaths
Some footpaths are poorly maintained such as the one from Lower Greave down to the windy bank reservoir. The area is also popular with mountainbikers and this is a healthy activity that should be encouraged but NO effort appears to be made by the authorities to provide routes, in fact if anything they appear to be reducing as more and more landowners are erecting signs prohibiting cycling and cycling on footpaths is becoming more actively prohibited generally.
76
The village hall is now, once again, a welcoming and comfortable space.
Help encourage more classes and activities to use the village hall.
476
The Village Hall is really our only public building (except the church).
Help encourage more activities in the hall.
7
Wilshaw has a positive identity with strong history history that has helped shape it. Meltham also has an identity linked to David Brown Tractors however this is weakening every year as the number of people who worked there or remember it is reducing each year. The rapid expansion in housing around the town in my view will also hasten the reduction in this identity.
No more house building.
6
Additional signage to slow speeding traffic through Wilshaw might help reduce the risk of accidents.
67
I was surprised to discover that there is a drop in session at Wilshaw Village Hall on Friday, (in three days time) as I had heard nothing about this until I noticed it as I was starting to complete this questionnaire. I am generally well informed about what happens in the village so I would be surprised if this is well attended.
More activities in the Village Hall.
Improved footpath maintenance and effort made to provide routes for mountainbikers.
Signage at each end of the village to slow speeding traffic.
Unfortunately fewer and fewer people appear to be prepared to volunteer and become involved in their local community. I don't know if anything can be done to change this but a more involved/ active local community is probably the key to making most improvements locally. In Wilshaw the Village Hall is the obvious place/ only place where this can be focused. The volunteers there do a good job but could achieve much more with more help.

that the town council are involving Wilshaw
kirklees would like us to be greener, but our busses stop at 5 30 and we do not have one at 3 o'clock as they do the school run, no busses at all on a Sunday

The bus drivers are very helpful (335 and 911)

SPEED Speed is one of our main issues and i have noticed that over the past 10 years the volume of traffic has greatly increased

our Village Hall looks very inviting what a change

Total dissatisfaction of the way Kirklees is treating Meltham residents by imposing car parking fees, with no information accessible regarding the cost to me the Council Tax payer. I anticipate the setting up and monitoring the system will cost more than revenue gained.
3
The wild open countryside ,and easy access to it.
Footpaths that are safe enough to walk on , repaired and maintained . Cars parking on footpaths ,electrical bikes and scooters discouraged.
5
There is a bus service.
Easier access to Marsden and Slaithwaite to the Railway network.
I will rely on my own vehicle, which I can access safely and whenever I need to.
1_____
Who ever thought of traffic calming on Slaithwaite Road should observe how it is abused with cars ,vans and lorries driving in the middle of the road disregarding oncoming traffic.
5
The beauty of the surrounding area.
There are Parks and a Sports Centre, but we seem to be a Town of 2 halves, Park or Sports Centre . More information regarding events would be helpful.
77There are plenty of places to play.
The Library is a Treasure due to the support and actions of local residents and the Town Council working together for the benefit of all.
Parents could be encouraged to take their offspring to play ,or at least observe what they are doing. Many children are left to play in the street on new housing estates, unsuitable toys are left abandoned in the middle of the road.
7
The needs of my family are met. This Town works well to provide all the facilities listed.
Publishing a list of all facilities would be welcome, not every household receives a regular copy of Meltham news
4
I do not know, things are changing
Encouraging new business to set up, monitor the alcohol ,wine bar culture.
6
There is a mix of old historic ,and modern new housing.
There is little social housing which is affordable. We do seem to have an excess of 5 bedroomed houses on the market, which are not selling at present.
66
I choose to live here, it is welcoming and safe.
6I feel safe here, avoiding evening and night time travel.
Toys are left unattended outside homes and in the street overnight and are not stolen.
5
Roads and footpaths are in a poor state of repair, highlighting this to the appropriate authority would be welcome ,but difficult I would think
4Free Parking to continue in Meltham Car Parks
Affordable social housing
Repairs to Roads and Footpaths
Support Town Council to encourage Kirklees Council to maintain their responsibility to This Community.

Cars take up too much space on pavements on some roads. Prams and wheelchairs would struggle to get past. That said, we have old narrow roads and people need to be able park near their homes.
5
Regular buses
Meltham to town bus route does not turn left (towards fire station) at junction so no bus stops (to Huddersfield) that side of town. All buses seem to go to/from the other side of the town.
655It would be great to extend the Greenway to Netherton.
Extend the path that runs alongside the Royd Edge stream further into the hills/past the farm.
55Doctor appointments are difficult to get at the time they are needed.
Need more bins.
Dog faeces is a problem on a number of Meltham’s streets.
4
Meltham needs more variety of shops and cafes. We could make more of our walking routes and attract people in with independent cafes and specialist shops…but which comes first?
655
Certain shops make Meltham look shabby - Meltham Spice (right in the centre), Munchies, Luigis. Shop fronts (signage and windows) need investment and good design.
6
I’ve never felt threatened during the day and only once or twice in the evening when walking past pubs with people stood outside…even then, threatened is probably too strong a word.
6Planters are not looked after so they look abandoned, which is a shame.
Meltham Spice shop front is very unappealing for such a central shop.
4
Let’s find out!
More doctors
Improve certain Meltham centre shop frontages
Make more of walking routes and provide more variety of shops and cafes to support walkers/visitors.
Lower rents to encourage variety of shops and cafes
Discussions with businesses that have shabby frontages
I wish I knew how to get more doctor appointments!

Greens end Road is a nightmare. Needs sorting. Local town council don't care. Two Valleys should take some responsibility as well
