I read it coverto cover.By Chip Overclockreg;I have done embedded productdevelopment for many years, and I write about my craft under thepen name "Chip Overclock". I read a _lot_, and most of what I readis non-fiction. I have an extensive technical library fillingseveral bookcases. But it is extraordinarily rare for me to read atechnical book cover to cover. Yet that's exactly what I did withthis book by Elecia White. Making Embedded Systems won't make youan expert embedded developer. Only hard work and experience will dothat. But it is the best and broadest and most practicalintroduction to the art and science of how I've made my living fordecades that I have ever come across. And I learned a lot from ittoo, which gives you a hint as to how technically diverse thisfield is. If you are wondering if embedded development is thecareer path for you, or if you want a book you can give a colleagueas an introduction, or if (like me) you dream of going back toteaching embedded systems design, this is the book I wouldrecommend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. If youare into embedded programming, you should read this one for sure!ByMike B.Excellent book on the subject! It's well-written, has veryuseful information, and if you are job hunting in this area, evenhas interview questions...and descriptions of how the authorevaluates responses to them, at the end of each chapter. Veryinteresting view into the mind of a technical manager there! I'mnew to embedded programming, but not to programming in general.I've done device drivers for larger systems, worked with OS code, etc., so many of the concepts weren't new to me, but enough werethat I learned a lot from this one. The writing style made itenjoyable to read as well. Highly recommended!1 of 1 people foundthe following review helpful. The book I wish I had starting inembedded systems.By CJSCovers a lot of important topics that everyembedded engineer should know. This is a great book in that itgives you background knowledge of things you need to know or go outand learn without getting bogged down with too many details. Theidea of describing design patterns is a good one, though some ofthem seem a little too abstract and like they're trying too hard(like factory patterns) to formalize ideas into some universalpattern or structure. The fact there is a math section and a lowpower section near the end is really cool and very useful. My mainissue with this book is that there are several errata (many arelisted on the publisher website) that are known about but they havenot bothered doing a reprint. Another issue is that some things arenot explained enough so you cant tell if it is an error orintentional. For example in the bootloaders section there is afunction pointer that gets cast and set to a static address. However, as well as the casting there is a dereference of theaddress before assigning to the function pointer which is notexplained.Overall though, I highly recommend this book, plus theauthor comes across as a nice and cool person.

The book is loaded with greatinformation and wisdom. Those just learning embedded systems willfind many mysteries revealed with lots of definitions and how-toadvice." --James W. Grenning, Author Test-Driven Development forEmbedded CAbout the AuthorElecia White has worked on DNA scanners, inertial measurement units for airplanes and race cars, toys forpreschoolers, a gunshot location system for catching criminals, andassorted other medical and consumer devices. She is the founder ofLogical Elegance, an embedded systems consulting company based inSan Jose. Elecia has developed strong skills in signal processing, hardware integration, complex system design, and performance.Having been through FAA and FDA certification processes, sheunderstands the importance of producing quality designsand how theylead to quality implementations.Elecia has spent several years inmanagement roles but enjoys hands-on engineering and the thrill ofdelivering excellent products. While continuing to provideleadership and mentoring, she prefers to focus on the technicalaspects of a project. A graduate of Harvey Mudd College inClaremont, CA, Elecia enjoys sharing her passion for science, engineering and interesting gizmos, particularly how these thingscan make the world a better place.
