About the data:
4
Data extraction: December 2024
5
For incidence report, "all types of cancer" include new diagnoses of invasive malignant cancers in all anatomic sites and in-situ urinary bladder.
6
For mortality report, "all types of cancer" include deaths with underlying cause of death associated with all invasive malignant cancers.
7
Data sources: Rhode Island Cancer Registry (incidence) & CDC National Center for Health Statistics (mortality)
8
Analytic sotware used: SEER*Stat v8.4.4 (seer.cancer.gov/seerstat)
9
Cancer site grouping and coding are based on the primary site and histology data submitted to the RICR. SEER Site Recode ICD-O-3/WHO 2008 Definition is avaiable at: https://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/icdo3_dwhoheme/index.html
10
Rates are per 100,000 and age-adjusted to the 2000 US Standard Population (19 age groups - Census P25-1130).
11
Confidence intervals (Tiwari mod) are 95% for rates.
12
Statistic not displayed when count of cases are fewer than 6-10 (incidence) or 15 (mortality) or >30% of RSE.
13
14
Rhode Island Cancer Registry collects, process and reports primary malignant cancers of all anatomic sites (excl. basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin), and non-malignant cancers in the brain and CNS.
15
Non-primary, recurrent or metastatic cancers are not “reportable”, according to the Rhode Island State Regulation for the Cancer Registry.
16
For a detailed description of the reportable cancers, please review the Rhode Island State Regulation for the Cancer Registry: https://rules.sos.ri.gov/regulations/part/216-10-10-2
17
Case count and rate reporting discrepancies between this report and other RICR publications are possible due to the delayed reporting for some cancer cases, corrections or updates from the reporting facilities, cancers diagnosed outside of the state, or cancers identified from death certificates or other sources of data.

19
A note about the impact of COVID-19: A decline in cancer incidence rates in 2020, compared to 2019, may be due to disrupted health services that reduced cancer screening and diagnosis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rates in 2021 may also be affected, depending on cancer type. For more information, see https://www.cdc.gov/united-states-cancer-statistics/publications/uscs-highlights.html

Additional notes:
24
Table 7 from Power BI report / Data sheet 07_Top15BySex_1997-2021: The top 15 cancers were selected based on the sites with the greatest case count during 2017-2021 for each sex. All other 5-year periods use the same top 15 cancer sites.
25
Table 8 from Power BI report / Data sheet 08_Top10ByRE_1997-2021: Top 10 cancers are included in this report, but due to lower populations of NHB and Hispanic Rhode Islanders, 10 cancer sites are not necessarily listed when (1) count of cases <15, and (2) >30% RSE of rates. Cases among non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native and non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander individuals are not displayed due to small case counts.
26
Tables 9-13 from Power BI report / Data sheets 09-13: The cancer sites listed are known to be associated with each risk factor. Because cancer registries do not routinely collect information about risk factors, the data for risk factor-associated cancers are based only on cancer type and each case does not necessarily reflect patient behavior or characteristics. For more information on cancer types included, see: https://www.cdc.gov/united-states-cancer-statistics/technical-notes/risk-factor-associated-cancers.html
27
Table 10 from Power BI report / Data sheet 10_Obesity-AssociatedSites_1997-2021: Cases of meningioma, a cancer associated with obesity, were excluded from this report due to small case counts. Counts of breast cancer are among ages 50+ while all other cancer sites are among 40+.
28
Table 13 from Power BI report / Data sheet 13_PhysicalInactivity-AssociatedSites_1997-2021: Counts of breast cancer are among ages 50+ while all other cancer sites are among 40+.
29
Table 15 from Power BI report / Data sheet 15_Mortality_RE_1993-2022: Top 10 cancers are included, but due to lower populations of NHB and Hispanic Rhode Islanders, 10 cancer sites are not necessarily listed when (1) count of cases <15, and (2) >30% RSE of rates. Cases among non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native and non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander individuals are not displayed due to small case counts.
30
31
The rates for male-only and female-only cancer sites were calculated based on counts and populations among males or females, respectively.
