How to use this Rainbow spreadsheet template

Use this spreadsheet with your team while you moderate and they observe UX studies.

Step 1Copy this spreadsheet (File > Make a copy).

Step 2Customize it to your study.

Step 3Share it with your team. Explain how they should use it.

Step 4Fill in participant information based on your recruiting information before the study starts ('Particpants' sheet).

Step 5Identify UX metrics to monitor during the study and add them to the 'Metrics' tab. Adapt to capture the metrics that are important to your study.

Step 6Add observations (not solutions or conclusions!) into column A of the 'Observations' sheet as you review each participant's experience.
If you observed a participant experiencing something listed, type '1' in the corresponding cell; it will automatically be color-coded, and the Frequency column will automatically update.

Step 7If using during live sessions, ask your team to update as they go, and add your own immediately after the session.

Step 8Fill in metrics the 'Metrics' tab whilst reviewing each participant's experience.

Step 9Discuss observations with your team after each participant, and agree a severity rating (Column K); don't forget to include positive feedback!
For live sessions, build in time for this between sessions.

Step 10Anyone can add their raw notes to the 'Raw' sheet.

Step 11Immediately after reviewing the last participant's experience, discuss possible solutions for each observation (Column L) along with any notes (Column M).

Step 12Document your research questions, answers, action items, and primary findings in the Summary sheet.
