Medical Sciences Orchestra

3
Purpose and Background
4
The Medical Sciences Orchestra was formed in 2018 and welcomes learners, faculty, staff, and alumni
5
from the School of Medicine and Public Health to rehearse and perform two concerts a year. The orchestra is a
6
great asset to SMPH and UW-Madison, providing opportunities for creativity and wellness while faculty, staff, and
7
learners from across many disciplines of SMPH sit next to one another, working together in
8
interprofessional teams collaborating to make music.

10
Rehearsal & Concert Schedule
11
Weekly rehearsals begin on Sunday, September 22nd from 3:30 - 6:00 pm in Lee Kaufman Rehearsal Hall at the Hamel
12
Music Center. The fall performance is Friday, November 22nd at 7:30pm in the Mead Witter Foundation Concert Hall in
13
the Hamel Music Center. The spring concert date has not been determined. Attendance at a majority of the rehearsals is expected.
14
15
Musical Experience & Auditions
16
Musicians with different levels of ability are invited to sign up for the orchestra. It is expected, however, that all participants
17
will have played previously in orchestras, bands, or wind ensembles generally at a high school (or higher) level and, except
18
for percussion and stand-up bass, have access to their own instrument. Specific instrument instruction is not provided.
19
Membership in the orchestra is not audition based. The orchestra has generally accepted any interested person
20
with connections to the School of Medicine and Public Health or other health professional schools. Auditions should
21
only be used if there are too many people for an instrument spot or for determining soloist or section placements. For the
22
woodwinds, brass, and percussion there are no auditions in any way, shape, or form. For the strings, the violins are allowed
23
to choose which section they are most comfortable playing in (first or second violins). For the role of Concertmaster,
24
the opportunity is given to all First Violins to audition. For Second Violins, Violas, Cellos, and Basses there are no auditions.
25
26
SMPH Liaison
27
SMPH is seeking 1-2 active members of the Orchestra to serve as a liaison between the Orchestra and SMPH to help
28
coordinate SMPH related recruitment efforts, promote Orchestra concerts and activities, and develop and print concert programs.
29
The role would connect periodically with the Administrative Director and Business Manager within Academic Affairs (SMPH) and likely
30
require 2-3 hours of effort per month.
